Best avoiding going to Preston by train as Lancashire's finest will be there on mass & frog march rovers fans to nearest pub & then insist on bussing rovers fans to/from deepdale

The trains are on reduced operation , not such a good option.

I think you can be assured police won’t be bussing any rovers fans anywhere, I have no idea where you get this inane rumour from??

This has been done many times at Preston for different clubs fans travelling by train. I've seen it for Wolves. They get kept in the Vic and Station until after 2.00 and then herded on to double deckers parked outside with loads of police and dogs preventing anyone trying to break away and walk it.

Would that even be allowed?

I'm sure the police would like to do that and would encourage away fans to gather in specific areas to reduce the probability of trouble, I'm not sure what right they have to tell you where you can and can't go.

What about non-football supporting people going from Accrington to Preston shopping for the afternoon or visiting friends for a coffee? Do they get herded around by the police just because they are unfortunate and end up on the same train as football supporters?

Last time we went on the train and exited the station via the side entrance as we were expecting hassle from the cops. We weren't wearing any colours although on our travels around pubs in town we saw plenty who were wearing colours and there was no trouble.

Couple of years ago we went early  doors to Lancaster on a 40th do, got off the train at Preston from Chorley to be rounded up by plod who were there in huge number gathering up Sheff Weds fans who were arriving for an early kick off at PNE I think.

Only a bit of sweet talking to a nice sensible young WPC saw us able to go on our way otherwise it looked like we were being bused to weepdale along with a load of angry Yorkshiremen whether we liked it or not !

It's a tactic used for large numbers of visitors arriving by train. Before this they used to be marched to and from Deepdale via Fishergate and Deepdale Road. Must think the buses are an easier option.

Interesting. So how do the police on the spot at Preston station determine who is going to the football and who is going shopping? Can't imagine a 70 year old lady going to Marks and Spencer on the train being too impressed about being herded or marched along in a large group of football supporters.

Its bloody obvious. They're not after 70 year old ladies. Have you ever travelled by train on a Saturday? Visiting footie fans have been marched to grounds with police escorts for over 40 years.

Tried to do it to us at Bradford last year, JH. Attempted to herd us into what appeared to be the smallest pub in Bradford. Thankfully, we managed to find someone who had half a brain cell and we were allowed to wander into the centre unaccompanied. Stumbled upon a decent pub called the City Vaults which had plenty of Bradford fans wearing colours. No problems at all.

Was there really sub 2000 away on that match ? Surprised me that. Seemed to be a lot more at the time. Still, I guess it wasn't the best start to the season was it ?

So 70 year old ladies are exempt? Seems like generalisation to me e.g. they're after younger people, predominantly males.

As I say, if you want to go on the train to Preston on the same day as Rovers fans are going for the football I'm not sure what right the police have to tell you where you can go.

I don't doubt they try to do it and most will go along with it. I'm just interested as to how they can enforce it. If you don't want to be part of the convoy I'm not sure who can force you to be part of it.

Think the allocation at Bradford was just over 2000 and there were a couple of hundred empty seats. Still a decent following but was following a poor start to the season.

There is a large police presence on Preston station every Saturday during the football season, even when Preston are away, many other fans change there. Those who appear to be travelling to Deepdale are routinely stopped and pointed in the direction of the Vic and Station. Take a look for yourself if you don't believe me.

Oh I believe you, absolutely, I've seen them myself.

Again, how do you 'appear' to be travelling to Deepdale for the football?

I know what you're getting at, there will be large groups of mainly blokes who appear to be football fans who the police will target on the station. But that seems very much a generalisation and again, there's nothing stopping a group of blokes with zero interest in football going on the train on the lash for the day, and just by pure coincidence it is the same day as a football match.

There might be a group of 15 blokes going for a birthday meal or going shopping. If they haven't all got match tickets how do you prove they are there for the football?

Lots of assumptions and generalisations taking place, immediately assuming people are there for one thing or another based on their appearance when they get off the train than what they actually are doing or intend on doing.

Of course there will be some idiots who invite attention but there will also be plenty who do nothing to warrant police attention who are just there to go and have a few drinks and enjoy the day who are herded around like cattle.

I've seen groups asked to show tickets.

15 blokes going shopping? Are you serious?

Unlikely, but possible. Not really fair just to make assumptions. In this day and age you aren't supposed to make generalisations or assumptions based on age, gender, sex, or race. If you do then you can be accused of all sorts.

What if you are going to the match but your mate has your ticket and he's meeting you later?

Can’t they just recommend you go to, say the Old Vic?

They probably recommend it as away friendly. I've been in there for a drink on a Saturday when Wolves were in town. There was no trouble in the pub. The strong arm tactics came later when half cut fans tried to make their way into town and were encouraged to use the bus.

Just another example of football fans being treated like scum, you've done nothing, but are guilty because you're a football fan.

It's a @#/? disgrace that they can still get away with these type of tactics in this day and age, to stop you going about your business because you're on route to a game is surely against your human rights?

Winds me up...

It’s not happening train strike already in place that day anyhow with trains restricted. The cops haven’t the resources to do a Burnley! Believe me!

I believe you 1864 but JHRover seems to be under the impression that this practice doesn't go on or isn't possible.

Remember when the Ewood protests were more common and I was specifically stopped off the fans bus from Darwen by plod (I assume because I was involved with Rovers Trust, and nobody else off the bus was stopped) and asked to provide ID.

Only gave repeated answers of 'No thank you officer, I just want to watch the football', but it wasn't until I showed my driving license they let me past.

Clear abuse of power, but once was once too often. Bad taste in my mouth. LucklyI have a couple of mates in the police who keep pranking that officer to this day :)
