Rovers vs Rotherham

These two statements are slightly contradictory, of course you could say that the subs the manager made got us the points, or you could say the lineup in the first place was wrong.

All up for debate but I liked the lineup today although I perhaps would have given Raya the week off and would have been happy to see Big Ben start.

Nice break now and I’d be hoping that Brereton is given the nod against Preston.

I like the line up today but I would have prefer Brereton to Graham.

Palmer did well today. was impressed

Most frustrating game in a while that i can remember. Battered them in 2nd half and got done with a complete sucker punch which you just knew would happen.

Rothwell looked class again when he came on. I really think we look a better side with him on the pitch. I thought Palmer also did well. Nyambe run riot down the right and our centre halves won everything but the header that cost us the goal. Armstrong is really finding his feet on the left, se great first touches and unlucky not to score.

Disappointed with the result but gopd to see us fight back. 2 points dropped.

too negative? what planet are you on? 26 shots at goal and 66% possession. hardly negative.

So being on Brereton in the two games didn't have positive impact in both games and got us 4 points.

You attend today?

Didn't Brereton only get brought on in desperation when we were a goal down?

26 shots at goal, 66% possession, wtf were we doing then if we couldn't score?  Only goals count!!!

No I feckin didn't attend today as I simply didn't fancy it.  That OK?  My sons attended and I trust their judgement implicitly - texted at half time and said 'simply cr@p'.

If Brereton had started both games, we might have had SIX POINTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought you didn't attend. I was there so I trust my judgement thanks.

Brereton was coming on before Rotherham scored actually.

Maybe look at the stats before commenting we were negative when you weren't there

Disappointing result today. Totally dominant second half but didn't convert the chances we had.

We need a Jordan Rhodes. Graham doesn't score a lot of goals. And we have no other strikers who play up front they all play on the wing.

Brereton played well again I thought. 2 assists in 2 games. He's certainly looking more confident.

Trouble is, he should be up front scoring goals which we are badly lacking at home. Which brings that 7mil on him into question again, why not spend half on a proper winger which we havent had since mowbray was here bar Chapman and a striker for around 3.5 someone like a hemed who qpr brought in or that calibre. Doesn't make sense, but then again it does, the owners. They'll only spend on players they think they can make money on, so established or proved players who would fit the above bill aren't welcome. Tony knows that and is playing it well, but needs to work harder on deals or frees for more established players or loaning some like gestede.

I had an eye on the dugout just before the goal, Rothwell was coming on but Brereton hadn’t been sent to warm up and was still sat with his jacket on

I did find it frustrating to see Brereton at one point get the ball out wide and whip in a cross and there was no one in the middle to get on the end of it. Which is hardly surprising with our 6 foot odd striker stuck out on the wing. There were a few times when we got the ball wide near the end and he was (obviously under instruction) stood outside the width of the 18 yard box when he would have been prime target for the ball in had he have been more central.

Brereton showed exceptional nous for that assist. Half-second pause made the defender think it was out for a corner, before bursting onto it for the cross.

Think he's earned a start up front on his last 2 cameos, esp as Graham hasn't particularly pulled up trees for a few weeks now.

I think it was about 3 or 4 minutes before the goal and I'm sure I saw Brereton getting ready. maybe I'm wrong.

Brereton doesn't stay in the middle of the pitch but will look to move around, use the channels and make runs

As a central, lone striker, he needs to spend most of his time between the width of the 18 yard box. Thats where he will get his goals. I thought that our crossing in general was really poor today but it doest help when your only striker is standing near the touch line when the cross comes in.

I suspect that the reason he spends so much time wide is down to manager instructions, based on Mowbrays recent commets aboht him.

Brereton game is based on movement and making runs. He aint a Graham or Crouch type player. I knew this when we signed him. We have to adapt and learn to play different.

Yes I would agree our crossing wasn't the best today we created a number of good opportunities today and should have won. Graham chance, Armstrong last minute left foot shot, Dack chances, Bennett and Palmer shots. we had enough. Armstrong was good wide but a couple of times he need to gamble on the ball reaching the back post and he would have bag a brace.

The second half performance was pleasing and good to watch. Shame we didn't start the game last this.

I know Brereton isnt a target man but that doesnt invalidate my assertion that he wont score goals standing near the touchline. Surely his runs will be most dangerous if they are made beyond the defenders. Im not saying never drift wide into the channels but he needs to spend more time in the centre. Whether you are a target man like Crouch, a poacher like Rhodes or a pacy striker like Vardy, you get your goals in the centre.

I agree that we should have won, although Palmers shot and all of Bennetts shots were speculative and at times the incorrect decision. Bell should have also scored in the first half and Graham had 2 golden opportunites. I felt that one of our biggest downfalls was some poor and brainless balls played in from wide positions.

How can you afford to have a family when you lose so much money betting on Rovers ?

A monkey sticking a pin on a paper gets more results right than you.

But hes not always on the touchline. He didnt stand still but always on the move.

I agree with your last point mostly.

What was the gate yesterday, looked around 13k again.

Riverside looked fuller and were in good voice.

We really need to source a new LB, Bell and Williams are either not ready or not good enough.

interesting that we beat a team on a good run at home then can't beat a team with a poor away record. Seems to be the story of our season really.

My biggest reflection would be we've a very talented squad but we've not got it quite right in terms of balance and seem to be a piece missing.

Bereton is a case in point. Chaddy has said he's not a target man but given how the system is set up that way to play a target man with Dack behind it seems to be an odd purchase. Regardless of fee - that's another discussion - he's clearly a decent player as shown by the assists in the last 2 games. But having to adapt a whole new style when Graham needs a rest, seems a bit counter intuitive to me.

Attacking midfielders are another case in point. None of the options look that comfortable in the wide positions of the 3 behind Graham. Dack obviously takes the central but none of the others really look too comfortable there leaving us with a lack of nous and cutting edge. Are they good players - sure, can they do a job there - definitely, but to push on I think we need at least one specialist for these positions. Imo that'd be a left footer as the challenge for our attacking mids of being on their weaker foot in a not so natural position is another barrier to overcome.

Don't get me wrong - we're ok as is. We work so hard and have enough quality to make sure we're competitive and get points. And the squad's quality as well as attitude is remarkably better than our last stint here. The thoughts are more given how close we are to playoffs and how competitive the league is, what can we do to get us to the next level (realistically that is!)

I think everyone agrees about Rothwell! I've never wanted the lad to start more than anyone. This is a big statement but ,going forward,  he's one of the best players we've had! I can't remember (don't think) anyone has been more excitable on the ball. As soon as he scores one goal it will only build his confidence & could lead to a key player for us. TM HAS to start him for Preston! He has the ability to rip any midfield apart!

PLEASE START HIM TM!

12,847 with 600 odd away. So about 12,200 home fans.

We are consistently 2,000 up on last season and about 500-1,000 up on early season.

Which is ok and we can’t expect much more considering how disappointing season ticket sales were. Let’s hope we sell plenty of half STs to further boost the crowds post Christmas.
