Two things you can't train into players. Positional play you can learn, crossing the ball can be worked on. I'm not surprised clubs further up the food chain are taking an interest. jim mk2 Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Nyambe's speed and athletic ability are the reasons why he's more likely to make it in the Premier League than Dack. He's not ready for the PL yet in my opinion and would benefit from another season with us but you can see why top clubs are looking. I do hope we make meaningful signings this month. A centre half, left back and a young winger would give the team such a boost 3

We need a decent back up option, particularly for Graham. He isn't getting any younger and we would struggle if he sustains a medium / long term injury. 3
philipl Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I am going to be a stuck record on this one. Many of you are buying half a team- sorry not going to happen even with limitless funds. This is the January window- if you haven't noticed it is cold outside, even in Malta. The performance against the Baggies yesterday again showed we are decent competitive Championship outfit so wholesale changes are not needed this window. BUT We do need a commanding leader at centre half. Allow Mowbray to go 3-5-2 AND have somebody who tells Lenihan, Nyambe and Bell what to do- I bet those three would blossom playing alongside the sort of centre halves we have had in the past. This is not criticism of Mulgrew- he seems to be a lovely guy but not a leader.

Where do you fit this third striker in? Up front? Whether he starts on the bench or not, we desperately need an experienced player who can come in and score a few (like Armstrong did last year). One that's wily enough to run a clock down would be good as well... Why? Because when you take either Dack, Graham or even Mulgrew out the team, we don't have any goal scorers. Given that we also can't keep clean sheets, we really need to add some more fire power! I'm not banking in Brereton scoring any this season. He looks like another Kevin Davies. May be ok in a few years when he's bulked up and focused his game.

We need specialised wingers that are prepared to track back (younger versions of Conway) as we currently play strikers (that are terrible at offering any cover to the full backs - no surprise we concede a lot from crosses) or central midfielders that don't offer anything going forward (like Bennett). The next 5 signings, be it now or summer have to be. CB LB RW LW CF All need to be good enough to go straight into the first 11 (although a player like Chapman would be a great addition to the bench). To be fair, they are the same signings most of us were asking for in summer! ? 1
philipl Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 We are at the point where we should bring in players who make the whole team better and are viable Premier League quality. Therefore less is more in terms of quantity but the quality has to be right.

Spot on as I think we aren't too far away in terms of back up across the team apart from up front and we've some good young ones knocking on the door who deserve a chance so if you really want to improve the team and they are chucking sevens of millions about then time to target some quality. Loan in now with a view to buy in summer if possible although obviously that isn't easy but last thing we should be doing is bloating the squad for the sake it that's been a real problem in the recent past. If they only make one good signing at a time over the next few windows that would be understandable as long as they are starter material. Toss up between a centre forward or centre back right now for me then root out some raw young Chapman like pace from somewhere on loan if possible. 1
ChrisPriceBaldSpot Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I would rather not bring in any loans this window. I think it's fair to say a play off push might be slightly too much to ask, so let's build a squad of our own players that can push on next season. 3 or 4 young and talented players across the park, maybe with a Huth style centre half would do me. I have a funny feeling Dack might leave and we will go 4-4-2. If that is the case then pace out wide is essential and somebody like Chapman would be ideal.

I agree with the quality side - though I think we need proven championship quality before we think about viable premier league players - hopefully some of the younger lads we've signed develop into those.

Bigdoggsteel Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I haven't seen anything about us signing Reed permanently. It would be a cracking bit of business. It seems like Southampton don't want to let him go and it's clear why. Where has Nickos representative on here gone actually?

There is a line, but it's great to see some fight again. Mulgrew got the two lads away as well, which showed some mature leadership. You can see that these players care about the club doing well. It wasn't like than under Coyle. Great to see at this level again. 1

SBlue Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Nickoette - Battle for Charlie Mulgrew between West Brom and Brighton, could see bids up to 10 million. Complicated deal though. 1

Mulgrew is obviously a top player but with his age and injury record taken into account that seems like a ridiculous amount to even suggest. 1
