I want it to work out for him so badly, but I’m leaning towards this viewpoint now sadly. 

Obviously, I’m not writing him off, but I think he needs to be taken out of the firing line for the time being.

Even when Rodwell plays, you can see there is a player in there, with BB you see nothing at all that suggests he'll be a decent player.

Brereton should be nowhere near the first team. If he's not going to play U23 then he needs loaning out to league 1. Would anyone take him??
