Summer Transfer Window 2019

Surprised that we'd go in for Payne when we didn't last summer. Noticed he was in and out of a team that got relegated from League 1 last year.

Actually think he's a decent player and would be useful if we are looking to play a more technical game. I wanted him back last summer.

But then again we've a lot of players in that area and have a lot of holes elsewhere.

I'd pass on this one.

Worth a read if not only for the surname of the journalist.

Think it could be just lazy reporting - linked with half the football league in there.

Us, Birmingham Oxford, Milton Keynes Dons, Bolton Wanderers and Lincoln City

Random list, but at least we would probably be favourites!

Do we have lots of players though? I would say he is a more natural back up for Dack than anyone else we currently have

I would sign him up, I don't see why it would or should impact on filling the gaps elsewhere!

Payne on a free would be a good deal. Young, happy to fight for his place and knows the club and the lads. Sign him up.

You know if we get him in, then we spend our budget on a striker and CB, it won't be a bad window.  I just wonder how things will go. Will it be moaning here up until deadline day when we sign said players, or will things just peter out leaving us short. If we don't sign a good CB, we are in for a long season. Both on the field and on here.

I think Graham can do it again next season, so I would be happy with an experienced loan or even taking a chance on a guy from the lower leagues. I wouldn't be big into loaning someone from the Premier league to be honest. Although I acknowledge it worked for derby and Villa, I just don't think we can pull off those types of deals, be in financially in villas case or via Frank Lamprds ties to Chelsea.

Hes purely a number 10, when he played elsewhere he was totally ineffective. And hes obviously nowhere near as good as Dack. We'd still need a central midfielder, Payne has just come off a poor season and isnt of the quality we need. Knowing "the lads" isnt a reason to sign him, we dont need him nor is he good enough. Suspect its rubbish anyway with all the teams linked.

I disagree. As a back up to Dack as a number 10 specialist, I think he would be a nice little signing on a free.

You watch much of him during his poor season?

He's the more natural back up for Dack yes as he's a pure 10.

But we've just signed Downing who can play that role. We've also got Butterworth who needs a chance.

Then you've got the wide players like Rothwell and Chapman who could do a job there.

And we've got 5 strikers (Graham, Armstrong, Brereton, Nuttall, Samuel) to go into 1 position. so if Dack was out you could go 2 up top.

On Payne... It doesn't exactly get my motor running but on a free and low wages could turn out to be a useful squad player. Put it this way, he's got some very good attacking midfielders to try and displace, so if he can manage to do that then he will be more than decent.

Ya, I agree about Butterworth for sure. He looks like a raw talent. If we sign Payne, Butterworth absolutely must go on loan.

Shows the rapid lowering of expectations being disguised as positivity on the forum. Nobody would have been suggesting Payne in May. As well they shouldn’t have if we have any kind of aspirations.

Couldn’t get into our third division side and has just spent the season getting relegated to the fourth division.

Nobody would have been suggesting Payne last week, let alone in May. Just because he's free and has been here before doesn't mean we should sign him. It would be a total waste of a squad space and an unnecessary blockage for young players like Butterworth.

Did anyone actually see Bauer play in play offs? He was terrible apart from the goal in final. He’s no better than we’ve got. I’m glad we didn’t sign him, Mowbray knows what he’s doing, trust him!

I watched him as closely as you can in that play off on TV given we were supposed to be interested in signing him. He didn't look anything special to me either. I was expecting to see a dominating presence and all I saw was a " Steady Eddie " type centre half who wasn't particularly outstanding at anything in any facet of the game. All I could see was a bit of an up grade on Downing  and not a starting centre half in the Championship.

That was only one game and he might have had off day. Maybe he'll be a colossus at Preston, if he is I'll be surprised but it's amazing what a good coach can do with average players.

I'm a bit puzzled how you can say " Mowbray knows what hes doing, trust him  " in one breath after you've described a player he's been chasing for 12 months as " Terrible " in another breath.

I trust very few people in football, that way you don't get made a fool of.

Had a quick look at his stats there. This is mad and correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like in his entire career he has never played more than 16 games in a season. That's a bit worrying...

Yes, indeed. Ruptured his ACL while at Sunderland, and only 16 apps for Boro after signing for them for £5m last summer. Their version Ben Brereton perhaps?
