Last words on Raya. This article from LET 19th of April should be very clear that Raya's position was under threat:

https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/rovers/news/17586641.mowbray-explains-goalkeeping-call-in-rovers-win-at-qpr/

Mowbray:

“I sat David down this week and said that it was time for a change. If your No.2 goalkeeper never gets a game then when you need him you’re never going to know (about him) when the other one gets injured and he has to play."

On how Raya took the decision, Mowbray said: “Fine.

“David has dropped below the standards he set last season.

“This is his first full season at this level and I still feel as though he has lots to learn.

“He’s a fantastic young goalkeeper who is very agile, he’s a work in progress, and I don’t think it will do him any harm for him to sit on the bench and

listen to some of my comments.

“Their goal, the modern day goalkeeper has to dominate his area and not just stay on his line and make saves, they have to come and catch things, distribute the ball quickly, be good with their feet.

“I’ve told both goalkeepers that it’s an area we’re looking to strengthen in the summer and create better competition.”

Phew, those last 5-6 pages were tough reading. Repetition , repetition, repetition. Why do some posters feel he need to give us daily updates on their non-changing view of Mowbray, Waggott and bizarrely the GK coach?

Anyways, any word on Gallagher? I suppose if we sign him, he is bad and we have been ripped off, but if Wigan sign him he is a great lad just Mowbray couldn't sell the club to him. Fun times.

Honestly I won't be too disappointed if he ends up at Wigan, especially if the fee is £5m!

Not really, TM told Raya he wanted to sign a direct challenger for him. He decided to leave, ergo we now potentially need two keepers. It doesn’t change the fact that we need defenders and the manager has said that too...direct quote

”defenders are coming”

Let's hope it's plural!

I was at that evening with TM. His rhetoric has changed a lot since then.

Luckily for Raya he's gone to a club where he is guaranteed to play every game and there are no other goalkeepers who can challenge for a place. He's also been given a promise by their manager that he won't ever be criticised or dropped if he plays poorly.

No players should be given such guarantees. If indeed that is the case.

I liked him when he was here. The only fear I have is either A- Wigan sign him and the pitch forks are out for Mowbray again for "not selling the club to him" or B- We sign him and he ends up playing on the wing...and I get my pitch fork out ?

We have just sold a keeper who has regressed, see Mowbray comments. This in itself makes the GK coach fair game

I'm not saying he isn't. I just find it funny people seem so adamant he is this or that, whereas in reality they know jack shit. His age and fact he never played seem to be what people are mostly basing the criticism on.

IMO Raya seemed to be improving until he got the kick in the head against WBA.

The worrying question is "How hard can it actually be to improve our back 4 and GK?"

25 days until Charlton and all our "manager" has done is made the unit considerably weaker be selling Raya and releasing Downing and Rodwell.

When is this "competitive budget" (+ the Raya £3m) going to play a role in our summer?

Boring and worrying summer so far.

SSN just rehashed the Karl Darlow story as a non starter.

Yes, I also thought Raya was getting better until Rodriguez deliberately kicked him in the head. He was rushed back too quickly because we had no decent cover on the books that our manager would trust.

B is definitely the most likely scenario imo!

The handling of that was strange. I don't know why Raya was sent for the operation asap if he was going to need it at some point. We weren't fighting relegation or chasing the play offs.

I was being sarcastic. The narrative now seems to be that the very idea of criticism or not being guaranteed number one has led to Raya wanting to move, as though Brentford will promise him such things.

It's all nonsense.

We're skint and have decided to take the money.

See, this I am starting to find funny.

People using Downing and Rodwell leaving as some barometer for how badly the window is going ? Downing left last January, it's old news. Most of us could have taken or left Rodwell, PLUS we have signed Johnson and Downing, who I think are far better than having Rodwell.

It's up there with "Smallwood will start against Charlton" or "Smallwood is Mowbrays favourite", when in reality he lost his place months ago and is practically nailed on to leave.

What's boring is the complete and total overreaction to everything.

Agree with you on Raya but “considerably weaker” sans Rodwell and Downing?

I’m not bored or worried by that scenario right now, I might be in 24 days.

Some have posted on here that Raya wanted to leave.  Full stop.  The question is why?

IMO, the main reasons why Raya wanted to leave:

  • His game wasn't developing as fast as it should.  IMO, that is down to 'boy' Benson our goalkeeping coach, the kid who started work in Carlisle Community Team and has never (as far as I'm aware) played professional football.  Coaching a goalkeeper is a specialist art - you need someone who's done it and got the tee shirt, a mentor who knows the art inside out from having played the game and a mentor who can build confidence and resonate with the difficulties and hurdles a young goalkeeper will face.  Hasn't Rayna already said the goalkeeping coach at Brentford is a good reason for going there - equally, I think you could interpret that Benson was a good reason for Raya wanting to get away from here.
  • Was made a scapegoat for Rovers' defensive woes.  Hasn't Mowbray done that again in his LT comments?  Last season, I can recall Mowbray openly criticising Raya and Nyambe (easy targets) but don't recall a word against Bennett who, IMO, was horrendous at right back or Williams / Bell at left back who, IMO, were persistent accidents waiting to happen, and boy did they happen!  Time and time again, our defence was ripped to shreds leaving Raya exposed.  If Mowbray, Venus and Lowe were capable of organising a defensive unit, bringing in appropriate reinforcements where needed, this would not have happened.  So, IMO, Raya's inexperience has become an easy shield for Mowbray to hide behind.

Was Raya the finished article?  Not by a long way but he has all the attributes to develop into a top class goalkeeper which I think he will.  As for crosses, I think your comments are completely wrong.  You learn by analysing, working on the the training field and putting into practice - for that, you need a goalkeeping coach with the know how and an ability to build confidence in the goalkeeper.  If the goalkeeper respects the goalkeeping coach for what he himself has done in the game and brings to to the table in terms of player development then you have a very decent chance.

Respect your views, but certainly don’t agree with the crosses and command of his box, Mowbray and all the coaching staff inc Benson must have tried to sort out for a long time, and obviously realised that it was a big problem and we move on with someone who hopefully  can command his box.

I was a big fan of Raya, but it was obviously a major flaw which he hasn’t been able to rectify and personally don’t think any G/k coach could have rectified it.

Looks like we are in a Big Bang Sheldon situation where irony should clearly be flagged so that people would not misinterpret comments.

As boring as saying people are being hysterical or over reacting for having an opinion. Or calling each other happy clappers or negative.

Just keep scrolling....

Okay, "considerably weaker" was a poor phrase. But reduced in numbers, depth, height and experience. Unquestioned.

The season ended over 2 months ago, we have been mathematically safe for 3. We have signed two free agent mids (I'm actually pleased with Johnson) to replace Conway, Rodwell and Smallwood/Evans - who we haven't even managed to "sell" yet ?

Let's see what the next few days/weeks bring. My gut is a new manager by Xmas.

I would be more than okay with not getting Gallagher. 5million is not the money we want to be spending on a striker who won't be a guaranteed starter.

That's where I am.

Reading between the lines he'd like to be here and we'd like to have him, but the boy will be 24 in a couple of months. If we had a bottomless pit of money he could well develop to be worth more than that in a couple of years, but the odds don't seem great to me.
