Summer Transfer Window 2019

Two keepers and Adarabioyo would take #Rovers to six summer signings (TM said he expected up to five before Raya exit) so by early next week the bulk of business will have been done. Wouldn't rule out the possibility of another centre half but will be a wait and see on that front”

@DE.

What does the previous 9 years have to do with my opinion on the current squad? Answer; nothing

There are several issues with last years squad and tactics, no doubt - I’m not arguing that the team was a whisker from being playoffs.

It says a lot about this forum that I can’t use positive inference (even slight like “step up”) without being instantly reminded “venkys ruined us!”

You said we weren’t far away, I presume that means from the top 6? So an improved side ergo has us challenging, no?

No extremes with me as we’ll be mid table again, it’s you that needs to cool your jets.

Where is the improved ‘game management’ coming from defensively, by the way? Just this keeper who we don’t even know?

We dropped lots of points from good positions. Game management comes from more experienced players on the pitch. A more vocal goalkeeper would make a difference imo, and Downing& Johnson’s experience can’t hurt.

Is that so surprising really? Maybe even the younger recruits / home grown lads like Lenihan, Nyambe, Bell, Travis etc will have come on from last seasons experience?

A lot of hope being put in a concept as intangible as ‘game management’.

Certainly ‘improved game management’ from the likes of Amari’i Bell wasn’t what TM had in mind when he was looking at improving one of the worst defences in the entire Football League.

Typical Blackburn moaning.

There is a time and a place for wanting the best- that is now

There is a time and a place for optimism - that is now

There is a time and a place for anxiety -that is within a week of the Charlton game if there have been no additions.

Most of the comments on this thread would be valid after a home defeat to Charlton and on 7th August without additions and after the sales of Dack and Travis.

Couldn't agree more the midfielders and strikeforce is more than capable for the championship. The defence has been the problem. For a few years if were honest. We got relegated weren't tested in league one and they showed last year they weren't good enough at times. Sort the defence keep Dack and we have an outside chance for top 6

Even in League 1 we conceded 11 more than Wigan and 1 more than Shrewsbury who finished 9 points behind us. Poor defending has unfortunately been a staple of Mowbray's tenure here so far. We can't assume he's suddenly worked out a game plan to stop us leaking goals as this has been a constant since he arrived. The only way it's going to get better with him as manager, imo, its to have better, smarter players at the back who can manage games without necessarily needing detailed input from the manager.

If you go back even further - Mowbray's Boro team in 2010-11 conceded 68 goals, way more than any teams above them and more than a lot of the teams below them. In 2011-12 they only conceded 51 but only scored 52 which was way lower than all of the teams above them and most of the teams below them. He was sacked from Boro in Oct 2013 and they went on to concede 70 that season which was again a lot. I'll be nice and opt to leave out Coventry as it was a different and difficult situation, but the last time Mowbray managed in this division there was no evidence he was able to work out how to balance attack/defence, and from his stint so far here I don't think much has changed.

It wasn't your "step up" comment I had an issue with to be fair, it was "a team not too far away last season!" that I felt was wildly inaccurate. We were quite far away.

The stuff about Venky's and the last 9 years wasn't directed at you personally for what it's worth, more of a general comment on the state of play.

The modern fan has a championship manager approach to everything where you just buy buy buy to improve. Improvement can often come within with good coaching and players improving. Its not the sexy approach but why employ coaches etc if thats not the aim. A few players improve a bit and a young player or 2 steps up and you can improve a hell of a lot and not spend a penny

Eh?

Being equipped to deal with scenarios through experience is “intangible”?

Remind me who had statistically youngest squad in the championship last season MB.

I want the very best. That’s why i’ll be getting behind the lads every single week.

As I also want the very best, I’ll use an Internet forum to post my doubts on why we may not achieve it.

Come on Phil, you should know how football forums work by now?

Of course it’s intangible, how the hell are you supposed to know if Amari’i Bell will develop it over a summer?

Youngest? Us, and who had one one of the worst defences? So you would want experienced defenders that are much more likely to have ‘game management’, than merely hoping young lads who happen to be 3 months older have suddenly developed it.

You're not ruling out another CH even before we sign one CH.  ?

Those are Rich Sharpe’s words.

After the City lad, he wouldn’t rule out another.

Get it?

Raya wasn’t the problem he didn’t drop us that much points and the stats show he prevented a lot of goals,

two week to get a keeper in and hope he clicks with the team is ridiculous.

makes you wonder what Mowbray was doing for the last 4 months when most managers would have a plan to execute.

There is absolutely nothing to suggest our manager or coaches are improving our defence in any way, and it's been two and a half years under TM now. If you're hanging your hat on that I fear you are in for some serious disappointment.

Hoping a GK clicks ? CH yes but a GK is a specialised position ..unique ..if we get a good GK with experience time isn't really a problem ..he will come in and do his job.

The statement in bold is what many call “moaning” or even “negative”.

As for waiting until after the Charlton game to pass comment, really? Shut the forum down and just read the LT!

The irony is that in the post-Dack/Travis, home defeat there would still be people saying “stop being negative”. (The swear filter could replace “negative” with “concerned” and there might even be better understanding). Right now I’m concerned about there being no keeper and a makeshift defence despite weeks of talk!

Ultimately, forums are about venting, passion, hyperbole - we are all fans or we wouldn’t be here. People just need to leave out the personal digs and enjoy the ride.

What does Hanley "reappearing" have to do with anything? No sign he is going to re-sign is there? We can all wish for things....

We finished a long way from the play-offs last season with a good run after the possibility of getting there had completely vanished and clubs were often just seeing the season out.

And a good thing too because we were nowhere near good enough.

Middle of the table this season too I feel unless good defensive signings are made quickly and/or young lads are selected and come good.

I honestly feel we are 'stuck" in the middle and are going nowhere fast. We could be in this league for years.

As for the club's operating model of "silent running" let's hope it doesn't mean nothing much is happening.

No more moaning on here than anywhere else.Optimism has to be based on reality.

I didn't have you down as a Boris type, Philip!

I can’t see any way that the city lad will be the only defender coming in, would be madness.

Hopefully just some smoke and Mirrors going on

We kick off in a fortnight, we need new players as we conceded loads of goals last season.

Making reference to that isn’t necessarily moaning!

He’s an example of an experienced CB who could be available come the end of the window when the top flight squads start to take shape. Fair relevant to the transfer section?

Much else I can agree on. I doubt “nothing much is happening” but I do doubt the ease in which (not you) some assume business can and should be done.
