A defender that can play in different positions? Well yes, it is what we need.

What need is a specialist big bastard of a central-half, preferably one whose played in that position for years and we can build a defence around. Sadly there is no chance we'll get one.

I think of Kevin Moran and weep.

Anyone ever criticise him for not being versatile?

He played on the play off final on the 27th May. Back in training in June.

I thought modern players had off season diet plans and fitness routines etc to ensure they didn’t come back out of condition?

True story:

Prem club spends over 50m on a player.

he keeps getting muscle injuries and the nutritionist gets blamed. But he is world class at what he does and all the other players are great.

transpires he wasn't following the plan and was tossing it all off.

nutritionist asks the gaffer to speak to him and sort it out. Gaffer says player is happy and doesn't want to upset him.

nutritionist quits football as he has had enough of the lack of professionalism.

not saying all are like that, but a lot are.

He was very versatile, was a great Gaelic footballer :)

Ya, a good solid pro like Moran would be ideal. Wasn't he like 33/34 when we signed him though? I can well imagine what the reaction would be to his signing if similar happened now-old, pensioner and injury prone would definitely be thrown out there!

We have enough square pegs to play CB, not one of ours is a real CB, they are all converted.

we need someone to Marshall the back line, control the other defenders and organise our defence. None of the present crop can do this and it shows. Mulgrew etc are not going to listen to a kiddo.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say Gary bowyer was a better manager than mowbary at picking out players and tactics

Anyone who had Robinson, Rhodes, Gestede, Marshall, Conway, Cairney, Hanley, Duffy, King and Olsson at their disposal and didn't make the play offs, is not a good manager or good with tactics.

With the exception of Lambert I don't think any of the other 6 manager appointments have been ones that involved a great deal of planning or sense. None of them other than Lambert would have had a sniff of another Championship job.

Lambert was dreadful too. I remember saying after his first 4 games that it was the worst, most boring and undeserved 10 points I had ever witnessed. What followed the remaining 6 months was worse. I was delighted when he left.

Ironic how excited everyone was (myself too) with Lambert... but he started the ball rolling towards relegation IMO. I've heard from many people in lots of different roles within the club that Lambert was easily the worst "person" to ever manage BRFC.

For what it's worth, does anyone actually think that if we had kept Bowyer, that we would have been relegated 18 months later... or at all. I honestly dont think so.

Bowyer got us to 8th and 9th in two full seasons, yet is lambasted for not getting us promoted with a squad HE mainly built. Mowbray just about gets us past Shrewsbury into 2nd at Easter and had one of the best budgets and teams in L1 history and then comes 15th overseeing the worst period of form in years from Feb - April, and still struggles to get more than 3 of his signings into the XI.

If you are one of the fans so able to criticise Bowyer, I dont see how you also see the sun shining out of TM.

The club will sign who they want anyway, so we might as well not comment on anything!

Once again, this is not Ewood Park, people can WA WA WA all they want if they think we need a more experienced defender for one of the worst defences in England.

(Who may also be coming, by the way).

Mate you’re as negative about the board and posters as roverandout is about Mowbray.  Moran was top class at his best, if we sign Skrtel say i think a lot would be happy (I’ve not seen him in Turkey but he looks to have played regularly so presume he’s still good enough for the championship) but it would hardly be unreasonable for one or two to have concerns

I think there’s every chance we went down under Bowyer in 15/16. The squad had been decimated and he looked completely out of ideas.

I criticise them both. Their failings are similar - both lack a pair of nads and fail to play to our obvious strengths, instead they set up simply not to lose against mediocre opposition.

I think you are very harsh downplaying the achievement of promotion from League One btw.  There have been plenty bigger and more expensive failures than our success. Also, whenever it happens, the acquisition of Dack was very shrewd and when we sell him, it will be for a massive profit.

Ya, but I am right :)

We aren't going to sign Skrtel. Not a hope. Be great if we did.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Best budget and team in L1 history?

Not having that.  For numerous reasons.

I dunno, I just found this article:

With Lambert's arrival, Blackburn Rovers have only conceded 15 goals this season, which is notable, given the fact that most of the bottom-half teams have allowed 20 or 30 apiece. In other words, Lambert is inheriting a team that is decent defensively.

I think lambert was a "get us promoted" manager, not a "save us from relegation" manager. We already had 17 points from 16 games and Charlton went down in 22nd on 40 points. I think we would have been just fine. Lambert only got 38 points from 30 games.

Plus, Lambert signed Elliott Ward.

We’ll never know will we, but we were only heading one way at that stage. Budget slashed and very poor players were arriving.

A leopard doesn’t change spots. Let’s see how he does this season with the team he relegated. We assumed that we would be promoted. So did Sunderland. I think we underestimate how tough it is/was.

I find it hard to imagine Sunderland didn't have bigger losses. They surely still had lads on huge wads from their premier league days.

But we were there before them so up until that point !

Must've needed a fair old overal budget to cover it so maybe some truth in it although not transfer budget obviously.

I think the hardest thing to do in football is to achieve what you are supposed to achieve. Nearly all clubs fail to achieve what they set out to achieve each season. Its why so many managers get sacked etc. Yeah TM's goal was promotion from league 1 and anything less would have cost him his job possibly. But to not give him the credit for acheiving his goal isnt fair for me. We needed that promotion badly and he delivered it
