joey_big_nose Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 I know we do this periodically, but I thought worth a revive to remind us of better days. What's the best XI you can build out of the Rovers you've seen? I would say ---------------------Friedel ---Berg-----Nelsen----Hendry----Le Saux Bentley----Tugay-----Sherwood----Duff -------------Shearer----Bellamy I've been watching since 1992. I guess what's remarkable is Bentley gets in there ahead of Ripley, but he was truly outstanding when on form. And I went for Belllamy over McCarty, Santa Cruz, Cole, Jansen as he won games single handedly for us in a way you very rarely see. Absolutely unplayable when on song. 2 Quote

tomphil Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 Rippers in for Bentley and i'd always go for the SAS up front they were a strike partnership, otherwise i'd go with the rest of the team above. Quote
jim mk2 Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 3-2-5 (proper football) Friedel Newton England Le Saux Clayton Tugay Douglas McEvoy Shearer Bellamy Duff 4 Quote

Commondore Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 I started writing this up and in the end landed on Mark Hughes' strongest team + pre injury Jansen instead of Bellamy, and even that's a stretch. Central midfield and full back really haven't been our strongest positions in the last 15 years or so. Quote
Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted February 27, 2019 Moderation Lead Posted February 27, 2019 (edited) I think I'm a similar age to the OP judging by his team and I don't think mine will be too different.... Friedel Berg Samba Hendry Le Saux Bentley Tugay Dunn Duff Shearer Bellamy I accept Dunn is a controversial inclusion, but for me, at his best, I can't remember many players I'd rather see playing for us! I never thought as a child, that I'd see a better 'keeper than Flowers. How wrong I was! Edited February 27, 2019 by K-Hod Quote

Tyrone Shoelaces Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 Wow, there's some really good teams there. I like Jim's slant on 3-2-5. That team would score some goals ! My team - in a 4-4-2 formation. Freidel. Newton, England, Hendrey, LeSaux. Ferguson, Clayton, Douglas, Duff. Shearer, Pickering. That's leaving out some truly brilliant players from the past 60 years, 1 Quote
Waggy76 Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 Freidel Newton Hendry Hunter Le Saux Duff Kendall Tugay Wagstaffe Shearer Pickering All I have seen on Ewood albeit 3 of them , only once or twice,,, 1 Quote

That's leaving out some truly brilliant players from the past 60 years, I left Duff out reluctantly because he wouldn't be defensive enough for the rest of my line-up. That's the problem---do you pick the best eleven players for each position or do you have to think of the formation as a whole? Quote

I considered putting him in and Duggie at 10 but I thought Bellamy was fantastic for us. Fred and Shearer together up front would have been interesting. Quote
jim mk2 Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 Friedel, Shearer, Le Saux and Duff are common to most teams, even with those fans going back 60 years or so. Le Saux didn't have alot of competition to be honest; John Bailey was excellent but we haven't been over-endowed by top quality left backs - though Sir Keith could have played there. Duff was an easy choice too, though Wilcox probably should get more votes than he has. 1 Quote
bazza Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 (edited) Jim's team was interesting. I wouldn't have McEvoy in mine because he was a great poacher who relied on knock downs and loose balls therefore needing a big man with him. It's very difficult to put yesteryear's footballers in the same team as modern players because the game has totally changed in fitness and pace; and in the laws of the game that don't allow brilliant sliding tackles from behind like Mike England used to do. However, here is my shot: Freidel Newton Henchoz England Eckersley Douglas Clayton Tugay Duff Shearer Bellamy Edited February 27, 2019 by bazza Quote
Mercer Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 (edited) I'd go: Friedel / Newton, England, Hendry, Le Saux / Douglas, Tugay, Clayton, Duff / Shearer, Pickering Subs: Flowers, Berg, Nelsen, Ferguson, Sherwood, Bellamy, Sutton Edited February 27, 2019 by Mercer Quote
old darwen blue Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) Nobody has picked our record goal scorer despite selecting forwards like Bellamy, Cole and McCarthy.
