CrazyIvan Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 Ex-Rover Keith Gillespie is declared bankrupt How is a professional footballer who played at the highest level in recent years now bankrupt? He must have earned more money than most of us can dream of in a lifetime... Utterly daft... Quote
Doaksie Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 (edited) How is a professional footballer who played at the highest level in recent years now bankrupt? He must have earned more money than most of us can dream of in a lifetime... Utterly daft... He has never talked publicly about having a gambling problem. In his Newcastle days though he reportedly amassed a debt of £60,000. In his early days he apparently managed to squander £47,000 in one day and £62,000 over three – not what you'd call prudent housekeeping. Shame really, he comes across as a nice guy. Hope he finds himself a club in England. Think it was a mistake moving back to play in the Irish League last year, both financially and in terms of prolonging what's left of his career (particularly for the international side). Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted January 5, 2019 Moderation Lead Posted January 5, 2019 Saw an interview with Keith Gillespie on one of those Premier League programmes on Sky earlier on. Basically talking about how he ended up gambling so much and the bankruptcy. Came across very well I thought. Proper shame how it all happened though! 1 Quote

I remember going to watch Rochdale v Man Utd in a pre season friendly years ago. Utd sent their reserves but that team included a young Beckham, Butt, Scholes, Neville etc. Gillespie was playing on the right wing and he was unbelievably good. He was rapid, tricky and he had plenty of end product. He was head and shoulders above the rest of their young players that afternoon. I thought " Bloody hell, they've got another George Best here ". 2 Quote

I didn't go to the Rochdale game you are referring to but I went to a game and thought the exact same thing. He really did look a talent and the best of the players you mentioned Quote
