This could be the start of quite a few clubs having issues, including us. There are only so many billionaires and rich Chinese business groups interested in buying a club, but plenty of shoddy con men and blaggers who can pass the tests.

...and the EFL would rather open the door to them than billionaires with ambition.

The EFL have said the 12 point deduction will only be applied after the season is finished. If they finish outside the relegation places, it will then be applied. If the finish in the relegation places, it'll apply from next season and they'll start on -12 in League 1.

Basically they have to finish 13 points (or 12 with superior GD) clear of 22nd to ensure safety.

In November 2018, Whelan sold Wigan Athletic to Hong Kong based International Entertainment Corporation and then there was a further change of ownership, a few weeks ago, when Next Leader Fund took control.

That’s two changes of ownership in eighteen months. The fit and proper test still working wonders then..and just look at the names of the buyers. Faceless non entities. Not local, no connections to Wigan, just more piggies thinking they can get their snouts in the trough.

It’s the same owners. Stanley Choi was putting in 1million extra a month as that was the deficit on top of other funding. Now he’s pulled the plug, IEC own the next leader fund, the HK national who runs the fund was also a shareholder in the parent company when iec first bought Wigan.

The company what owns the club is in administration it the company what owns the ground

Feel sorry for Wigan and their fans. After Bury that's another Lancashire club that could be heading for extinction.  But for the grace of God (or Venky's) we could be dire straits too. What are the EFL doing to help Wigan? A 12-point deduction is a harsh punishment for a broken football model that fails to protect clubs from avaricious and unsuitable owners.

It looks to me like what has happened at Wigan is what was about to happen to Charlton a few weeks ago, and still might if they don't sort themselves out

At Wigan Dave Whelan sold to IEC who have the cash to fund them but have since decided they dont like pouring £10 million a year into a football club so passed the club on to this other bloke. Turns out he can't or won't fund it and the money hasn't arrived to pay bills so admin it is.

Not sure how much is down to coronavirus or whether they were going into trouble anyway and this has sped things up. Covid is probably a convenient excuse to clear the decks and stop putting money in.

I was reading earlier that their Hong Kong owners thought they would drastically increase revenues by putting a new tv screen in the ground and other random ideas to increase income and it hasn't paid off. Not sure who advises these people but Wigan Athletic with their 7000 a week crowds NW rugby town were always going to lose cash at this level.

They were lucky to have Whelan for 23 years who put them somewhere they never should have been and it is perhaps inevitable they will sooner or later end up in the lower leagues.

At Charlton when Duchatelet sold up he passed it to a group from UAE and people got excited thinking they were loaded. But they soon got fed up and didn't want to pour millions in so walked away.

From a selfish perspective if Venkys are billionaires keen to see the club promoted and never refuse a cheque then we could come through this in a good place if numerous rivals struggle to pay.

The problem is that a lot of owners will have had to fund their main businesses through the crisis, so unless the owners have an affinity to the club, the football club will be the first to go before their main businesses.

If you look at Venky's, they are asset rich but not necessarily cash rich. In this pandemic that is a problem as you need lots of available cash to fund increased expenses and significantly reduced income. If you look at ourselves, we probably make £100k per home game which in an additional £6-700k Venky's will have to find for this season.

Alot of premiership and championship owners are going to really struggle to fund the club and rebuild their existing businesses at the same time. When you get down to League 1 and 2 with local business owners (and fans of the club) owning the club it is going to be nearly impossible for a lot of them to keep going with pretty much £0 turnover. I wonder how much Ifollow will pay each club for streaming rights and will fans want a streaming pass in the lower leagues etc

Not a great way to finish your 5,000th league game - the first club to get there. Of course they’ve only played more than us because we have been more successful and therefore have played less in the lower leagues where they have played more games.

Bradley Dack seems to have riled up a few pie eaters on Twitter...

If he meant it can’t say I blame him, poor form? Maybe

However the stick they gave him after his injury and on Twitter since he’s entitled to give a bit back
