Guest Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 (edited) "During the summer of 1880 he caused still more controversy by moving to Blackburn Rovers, a local rival of Darwen. The move again stirred up accusations of professionalism amid claims that Blackburn had offered him improved terms. Suter's move inflamed an already testy local rivalry, and bitter games and crowd trouble dogged future Darwen/Blackburn matches for years." From Suter's Wiki page. The "Rivalry" alluded to in the trailer will 100% be between Darwen and Blackburn Rovers. Also interesting to note: "In later life he ran the Millstone Hotel in Darwen" Partick in 1876 to 1880 played a whole series of friendly games in the area, against the following clubs. Here's the results: 1 January 1876 - Darwen 0 Partick 710 November 1877 - Partick 5 Darwen 01 January 1878 - Darwen 3 Partick 22 January 1878 - Blackburn Rovers 2 Partick 19 November 1878 - Partick 2 Blackburn Rovers 01 January 1879 - Darwen 0 Partick 72 January 1879 - Blackburn Rovers 2 Partick 41 January 1880 - Turton 3 Partick 52 January 1880 - Bolton & District 3 Partick 32 October 1880 - Darwen 4 Partick 1 The two in bold are when the series seems to focus on, back to back, Rovers the day after the Darwen game. Although, the "rivalry" is also potentially this story. "They faced Old Etonians over three matches, all played in London, and the story is well known. In the first game, Old Etonians led 5-1 at half-time, but a whirlwind response levelled it at 5-5 including two goals from Love. The Etonians, fearing defeat if the match carried on, refused to play extra time. In the replay Darwen drew 2-2, and it was only at the third attempt that Old Etonians prevailed. A fortnight later they won the FA Cup itself." Edited March 9, 2020 by JoeH Quote

Guest Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 And finally for research on the matter: "But in the summer of 1880, without warning, he jumped ship and moved to local rivals Blackburn Rovers. Darwen protested furiously that Suter had been financially induced, but there was, of course, no proof - and precious little sympathy for Darwen in any case as they were suspected of paying Suter themselves. The chances are that Rovers made Suter an offer he could not refuse, either a straight cash payment or a large loan on easy terms to set up a pub. However, I did discover another possible reason for Suter wanting to leave Darwen. According to a family legend, he fathered an illegitimate son by a servant girl, and the time of his move to Blackburn would have coincided pretty much exactly with the discovery that she was pregnant. Whatever, it was a successful move and Suter was the first man to make a career as a professional footballer. He remained with Blackburn Rovers through a glorious decade in which they were the first northern side to appear in the FA Cup final, in 1882, and subsequently won the FA Cup three times in a row, in 1884, 1885 and 1886. Suter just found time to make one appearance in the Football League's inaugural season in 1888, and continued to live in the town as a publican until shortly before his death in 1916." Quote

Sex, Football, and Rovers. Can it get any better? The more things change the more they stay the same, Thank you God. A recipe for success Quote

Mattyblue Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 So they’ve merged Olympic and Rovers? I suppose the public school vs mill workers narrative would’ve been confused with those public school boys of our own involved! Quote
Roving Mick Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 Sounds a bit like the Comic Strip's version of the Miner's Strike. Quote
SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 (edited) "As is the dramatist's prerogative, Julian Fellowes has taken some artistic licence. The 1883 FA Cup Final was contested between Old Etonians and Blackburn Olympic. But Suter never played for Blackburn Olympic." "He actually played for local rivals Blackburn Rovers, who went on to lift the cup for the subsequent three years. For the purposes of the TV show, the two teams have been merged to make one club simply called Blackburn." So it's a Historical period Drama that's Historically incorrect and the ultimate insult, they have 'Blackburn' playing in ferking shyte Claret and Blue?...what a piss take!! How disappointing, neither Rovers or Olympic mentioned possibly to avoid 'Waggott tax' film royalties?.As mentioned, our club should have been all over this. AggyBlue Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 Well I'll be watching it and I'm sure I'll enjoy it. It's a drama not a documentary. 2 Quote

Claytons Left Boot Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Just watched the first episode. Not a Darwen accent to be heard anywhere. One Bolton type accent with the others being stereotypical ‘northern’ accents but from nowhere in particular. A few shots of ‘Darwen’ the town which weren’t Darwen and a quick shot of the moors which, again, wasn’t Darwen Moors. Apart from that, it was fine lol. A bit slow moving but, on the whole, a decent watch. 1 Quote
Rogerb Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 The matches were filmed in Stamford park Altrincham Quote

HowieFive0 Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 This was the team v Darwen .Woolfall the keeper (a relative of mine) was also a relative of Daniel Burley Woolfall who im sure some will know as being the only English FIFA President to date. Both came and lived in Blackburn. The next FIFA President was a certain Jules Rimet .. who im sure you ve all heard of! https://www.fifa.com/who-we-are/the-president/daniel-burley-woolfall/ 1 Quote
arbitro Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 In the absence of real football I have binged on this and it's quite an enjoyable watch. I would sack the researchers though. One of the two Scots who came down to play for Darwen referred to himself as 'a Darwenite'. Surely everybody knows we are Darreners. ???. And Blackburn playing in a claret coloured shirt (or did that really happen). Sacrilege if not true. Quote
Mattyblue Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 As far as I’m aware Rovers or Olympic never wore those colours Quote
47er Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 (edited) Having got run to reading the thread, realised my points had been made! A lesson to me (again!) Enjoyable programme though. Not expecting historical accuracy. Wonder how much of The Crown is accurate?!! Edited March 21, 2020 by 47er Quote

I’m not sure about the Old Etonians all being cads and bounders storyline, I’m pretty sure they didn’t invent the rules just to bend them, and it was us playing two pros! Onward to episode 2 and the semis! Quote

Mattyblue Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Thing is both Rovers and Olympic have always played in blue (I know Rovers wore white for a couple of years right at the beginning), so should have been simple enough, why claret? 1 Quote
