tomphil Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 Promotion was the aim and it was a massive massive relief given the huge concerns of what might happen if it wasn't achieved. However if you are close to winning something and have a 50% chance you should damn well go for it. Some of those players won't get close to any league winners medal in their careers. Doesn't do a managers CV any harm either. You shouldn't go shit or bust for it and risk blowing 2nd place but if that isn't the issue then go for it ! 1 Quote

Stuart Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/18114480.downing-can-weapon-not-vulnerable-left-back/ Yet another off the mark observation from Tony, and seemingly trying to justify his changing of a winning formula. Let’s hope we have enough momentum in this team now because it looks like chopping and changing the team is set to resume. Quote

With 5 wins and a draw from 6 games Mowbray does not have to "justify" anything - the standard of his decision making speaks for itself. 1 Quote

The concern is that he is now trying to make out like Downing is a weakness in the team [at left back] which other team will “target” when the truth is anything but. Now Bell is being talked up as a viable alternative when he has being talked about, almost universally, as a weak link who lost his place to Cunningham, then Bennett (!) and now Downing. This even suggests that we have depth in this position - another timely excuses not to address it in January. It’s going to be deja vu January all over again. Quote

Laughable but sadly typical of the kneejerk mentality in football. 1 good game in 20 and Bell’s suddenly the answer now. 2 Quote

Interesting timing in getting it out though. Will certainly attract players. Was sent to me by an ex player into a WhatsApp group with four others who are still in football and some of them couldn’t believe the set up. Th Who wouldn’t want to work there right? ? 5 Quote
tomphil Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 It's impressive and all seems very organised and professional so got to give credit to Mowbray and whoever is overseeing it. To me that's still where his greatest strength lies and although you'd expect that of a club like this anyway i doubt it was that way when he walked in. As long as the main focus and funds remain committed to pushing the first 11 as far as is humanly possible we should do ok. Quote

I played (quite badly) as a young lad. But a lot of the lads who I played with went on to have decent careers. Some excellent careers....all retired now but most still involved as league scouts, coaches and a couple as managers. A couple of them were blown away by the standard of our facilities. Wasn’t expected. I’m even more convinced than ever that video has been released to attract potential players you know...it’s very impressive that. 2 Quote
