Tony Mowbray Discussion

Wolverhampton is a city not a town club

Wagner and Farke was appointed by Stuart Webber who was sporting director at both clubs.

Interesting choice JHRover in McCarthy and Connor especially if we are going to cut the budget, promote youth and look overseas for players with the new scouting network in place.

Who has said we are cutting the budget?

Looking overseas for players with the 'new scouting network' is another disappointment of Mowbray's management. It just hasn't happened with any noticeable benefit to the squad.

You want to operate to a budget fine, McCarthy is one of the best at it.

Did you not see the finances last week? We are going have to cut backs. We have to meet FFP rules. How much but I wouldnt expect another 5 million for one player to be spent.

Guess we see this summer.

Plus Mowbray has said there is no transfer war chest.

We have to target good players for cheap players. I've suggested players I would sign now. Here another player to challenge Nyambe for right back slot is Lewis Coyle from Leeds. Available and out of contract this summer.

Yes I saw the finances. Entirely predictable - will be similar every year we are in this league. I suspect none of the figures were surprising for the money men at the club.

Mowbray has exhausted his funds and arguably doesn't deserve any more money.

Decent player is Lewis, I've seen him a few times playing for Fleetwood....well regarded by the fans too...the only thing for me is he is quite small and doesn't specialise one position,  so is he a young bennet at this level.

He was left back in a game I saw, so pretty versatile but will that go against him the higher he goes

No wrong versatile in my opinion.

Do you watch alot of Preston and Fleetwood games at any levels?

Prior to Fosun coming in Wolves’ usual home gate was around 18/19,000, ‘big city club’ indeed.

If we decide that we can’t compete with standard Championship clubs then let’s get back down to League 1 and be done with it.

The process for Rovers is to sit around and wait and see who applies for the job, or alternatively go through lists put forward by popular agents, ex-players or people from the local area and decide on the basis of who is going to be cheapest or most grateful for the opportunity.

Completely the wrong way to go about appointing a manager.

You have to either pay the bucks to get a top proven manager, or if you can't and have limited cash, then you have to go out and headhunt the right man. Barnsley spent ages looking for their new manager, unearthed him from relative obscurity yet appears to be doing well. Same goes for Wagner, Farke, Cowley.

You have to be proactive - sell the club - have a vision and get the man to fit that rather than sit waiting for applications to come in and then draw one out of the hat.

I've said this before but I would be opening negotiations with Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor to come in after the Euros this summer. Until then either leave Mowbray in place or appoint a caretaker.

Do you see Waggott ever doing that?

Mowbray playing the old "I can only tell them what to do in training it's up to them on the pitch" card in the LT regarding Gallagher this morning. You spent £5m on him Tony so if he isn't capable then it's on you.

Pretty confident you don't get to Sam's age at a PL club if you don't even understand the basics of playing centre forward.

I imagine the problem is taking daily centre forward lessons off a centre half.

Alright buying these players to develop but who is doing the developing ?

According to the club's website Damian Johnson is First Team Technical Coach and Head of Player Development. Many on here want him as manager.

I mean Gallagher was far more potent under Coyle for fuck sake. There's literally no more evidence you need to prove Mowbray's extreme limitations as a manager.

He wasn't a centre forward either but bearing in mind every player at the club bar Downing is regressing (and we now have a thread on most of them) this needs explaining. Today TM is saying Gallagher needs to learn how to head it, when to run, when to jump, etc. Fundamental basics ?

I watched Liverpool schoolboys teach Everton yesterday. 16 - 19yos dominating a PL side. I thought... bring any one of them lads here on loan and it will end their career.

But like I said on Saturday that in the 2 years away from here his game has never develop and improve. Bad loan move to Birmingham under 3 different manager who none help him develop as a player. Then 12 months at Southampton reserves did nothing again for his game again.

So he 24 years old but he is 21 years old in footballing terms.

Yes I would want him as a manager if Mowbray leave.

If you watch the Video that Rovers posted before Christmas what Johnson does coaching.

Here the video again for those who didn't watch it

Yes, we have too many that can play different positions without actually specialising....our full backs that has been playing are a good example,  benno and downing are not defenders

Agreed but as I have pointed out it seems pretty likely that the manager - whether it be Tony Mowbray or anyone else - is operating according to a club transfer policy that does not permit him to spend any significant sums on defenders; hence players in other positions are converted.

So Mowbray was just telling bare faced lies when he told the fans "defenders are coming"?

If he is being stopped from spending money on defenders than why make such a statement?

Its entirely possible rather than pretty likely isn't ? We have no evidence.

But it looks bad for him either way.

Not sure of the date he said that but Tosin and Cunningham did come; is it really necessary to use an aggressive phrase like bare faced lies.

Yes entirely possible (you must have been a fan of the late John Oaksey on Channel 4 Racing to be keen on that phrase) is a way of describing it. The evidence is in the club's transfer record.

Mowbray had a budget and he chose to spend the majority of it on Sam Gallagher.

We have terrible owners that can't be disputed but since Mowbray has been at the helm he has been backed.

He hasn't had to sell any of our better players and has spent close to 15 million on Gallagher, brererton and Armstrong.

Downing, Johnson and Holtby will be on decent money or will have got significant signing on fees certainly in the case of Johnson (who had a year left on a lucrative deal at Derby) and no way would Holtby have been coming here if our deal in terms of pay wasn't attractive.

The manager has spent badly and it's too easy just to throw the blame at our owners door with statements like the manager is being told he can't bring in defenders.

Was it at the manager's instigation that Brereton was signed ? Some of us think not.

Your post backs up the point that I was making. All the players that you refer to who on whom a significant financial commitment is made are forwards and midfielders. The evidence points to a club policy that the manager - be it Tony Mowbray or anyone else - has to play around in the bargain basement for defenders and goalkeepers even if their professional judgement is that we would fare better with a more even handed approach.

Well if true that he can't sign defenders then Mowbray isn't the man of honesty and integrity I thought he was.

Mowbrays comments on brererton at the time he was signed suggested he was his signing. The same when he said defenders are coming. So basically you saying Mowbray is a liar and is only here for the money?

No man of integrity,no man of honour would work under such conditions and if Mowbray is working under those conditions and lieing to the fans then he is no better than Kean or Coyle in my opinion.

My take on it is he has just spent the money badly.

I don't like the word "liar" because I think all football managers will be diplomatic over certain things that they say in public. However I do think you rightly point to one issue at the club, namely that there will be plenty of managers who would not be attracted to the job here when the owners create such difficult working conditions - that was why Lambert walked.
