Tony Mowbray Discussion

I can't remember now, but I'm guessing Mowbray stuck Gallagher out on the wing when he arrived back in 2017 as well? From memory (and I've tried to forget most of that season) we were playing more of a 4-4-2 with Coyle, which had Gallagher in the penalty box more often. I'm guessing Mowbray played him further away from the box, as he's doing now, hence the severely reduced goalscoring stats. Can't really remember though so I might be totally wrong on that.

In terms of attacking threat he has done very little and has never really looked like scoring in my opinion.

People will judge players on their performances, and it makes perfect sense that people have regularly praised a defence on the back of 3 clean sheets, and also questioned an attack that gas yet to score from open play. Gallagher has played every game and is a big part of said failing attack.

If you have such a problem with what you perceive to be the nature of the messageboard, what do you get from regularly reading and posting out of interest?

“He’s never looked like scoring” is again an example of a gross oversimplification of a team scenario - Dacks hardly threatened, AA, DG, et al either.

The point remains - whether it’s using 3 year old stats or purely his shots/goals/assists in 6 games in 2 different positions, I don’t think it’s particularly fair to ignore all other good aspects of his performance to criticise.

As for the final sentence - I assume by that question you prefer to do your reading/posting in an echo chamber!

Do people still see mowbray as a nice guy or has his mask slipped enough for you yet? Last night was yet again the true mowbray with that ballboy. He has a temper and snaps

More passion = more I think this bloke really cares about the direction of this club.

Nice guys can lose their mind at football. @K-Hod is testament to this... ;)

I'm glad he does i hope he directs it at players sometimes last thing we need is a snowflake or genial uncle type boss it's about time he got a bit more ruthless.

Hail Tony mk2 ...

If he hadn’t cracked up we would’ve heard “oh I wish we had a manager with passion, Souness/Hughes wouldn’t have put up with the time wasting.”

We scored plenty last season with none

We are playing a new system with "nobody down the middle".

Slight flaw... the goals are down the middle.

Thats possibly why we are struggling to score and after about 6 games had about...6 shots on target.

Maybe Tony dreamt this new system and was unsure if it was a dream or genius premonition.

Don't we want this though? One of my biggest gripes with Mowbray was that he always come across too "nice".

I don't want a nice man as manager, I want a winner who will snap when the time is right.

Only Mogga snaps by lecturing a teenage ball boy in the middle of a game on ‘the importance of values and being a good human being’.

:D

Well, Brian Clough was known too! Maybe a Middlesbrough thing?

Interesting. So what’s your take on Mowbray? You say his mask has slipped. What do you think is underneath the mask?

Mowbrays never played wingers at Rovers. We’ve scored plenty of goals. The problem at the moment is that they are changing the style. Sheff Utd was the best example of this but ultimately they know they have to win games and so it’s easy to revert back to diags into DG which is proven to work...

I’d like a manager who was tough but fair. He is quite happy to blame his own players that he doesn’t fancy but if your loyal to him he shows blind faith. Can tell you a few of the players don’t particularly like him- rothwell for one. Feels no matter what he does he can’t be a regular.  Nyambe another. He isn’t the lemon drizzle cake humble manager he likes to portray in the media

I think that the wide areas have been quite a weak area throughout the teams that Mowbray has played, and in terms of us "scoring plenty of goals,"  I would suggest that goal and assist contributions have been pretty poor from that area, and we have been incredibly reliant Graham and Dack (often assisting each other) partnership and from our former set piece specialist of a centre back.

The likes of Gallagher, Brereton and Samuel when played wide as wide forwards I think it would be difficult to argue have been anything other that in the main, incredibly ineffective and noticeably uncomfortable in those areas. Their combined goal and assist return from these positions would likely make for grim reading.

There was also the "defensive winger" thing that Mowbray seems to have thankfully started to phase out, with the likes of Bennett, Conway and the out of position Reed mustering up a lack of attacking threat.

The main success was Armstrong in his first half season in League 1, a constant menace from a wide role. Last season Mowbray had perhaps too much patience with him, and also didnt help by IMO playing him wide left where he is less effective, but even so, he was poor far more often than good and his numbers were fairly underwheming.

Rothwell and Chapman are the 2 exciting and seemingly most natural players in these positions but due to the cautious nature of the manager, have ultimately both struggled for game time. Rothwell is the main one, only a couple of goals and a couple of assists but they came at the end of last season when he was excellent, started this season on the bench. Chapman under utilised in his first spell and ignored in his second spell. Downing seems to be someone who can hopefully get decent numbers in terms of scoring and assisting, and was superb v Hull, but you look at his stats in recent years and also obviously his age and there are perhaps question marks on whether he can really improve our goal contributions and also even if he can, for how long.

The real irony to me is that he breached a regulation to speak to the kid about morals and being a good human being.

Oh give over. How is telling a ball boy to stop acting like a little shit, in a polite way "breaching the rules"?

I think Mowbray is open to criticism on many topics, but it seems some fans just use everything and anything as a stick to beat him with. It dilutes the real issues in my opinion.

We aren't playing a system with nobody down the middle. Gallagher, Graham and Armstrong have all played down the middle. We did not play 1 game with nobody down the middle! We just haven't taken our chances.

It’s complete bullshit tbh mate. Whatever can be rightfully levelled at Mowbray, I have literally NEVER heard anyone in football refer to anything other than how thoroughly decent the guy is.

The drivel that spews out “you can just see Joe Rothwell doesn’t like him” the crap about Joe Nuttall being “let down” by him etc...if only they knew the truth. How much respect both have for the manager. In fact how much the group suffer if they think they’re letting him down.

Are his tactics always great? Does he sign brilliant players everytime? Nope.

The biggest criticism which stands mutually between here and and the club is that, if anything, TM is too loyal.

The annaihilation of the manager by some on here is embarrassing.
