Signings and expectations can go either way, Downing had very limited impact on games at Boro towards the end and at his age there was always a red flag there. Hes come here and is enjoying an indian summer. Adarabioyo had a poor spell at West Brom, their fans didnt rate him at all and nearly everyone on here correctly pointed out that he was being played in the wrong position so there was always a question. Hes been a very good signing. Conversely, Johnsons signing was greeted solely with positivity. And hes been with occasion exceptions, a poor signing and has been unable to get a regular start for months. So it can go both ways.

But if we cannot make a judgement on potential signings, based on positives and negatives either ideally from what we have seen ourselves from a potential signing, or from other evidence, positive or negative, good stats, bad stats, being dropped, being a sides best player, playing out of position, having a side built around him, price, whatever it is, then we may aswell close this thread.

I think the key to @Bigdoggsteel post was “if people don’t know anything about McLaughlin” then don’t....It’s a valid point too..

Sound a good choice and what we need in the keeper area. Looking at the YouTube Clips of him and the games I've seen, you description is spot on.

After speaking to a few Sunderland fans on twitter this morning, Yes he was drop for 3 games, come on at half time in the 3rd game then played next game then drop for next 2 games before reclaiming the no 1 shirt. Played in 21 games this season. 5 clean sheets. last season, played 49 games including playoffs games and 15 clean sheets.

I don't feel that a description of one good save in a quiet game makes him exactly what we need, but to each their own. If we do get him though, I of course hope he's a good un.

We definitely need to get someone in there. If we do have an outside chance of a playoff push, Walton is more than capable of derailing it.

If a 32 year old has had one season at our level - and played the rest of his career below it, then I think it’s valid to raise concern. Regardless of whether I’ve seen him or not.

But presumably that applies both in terms of making positive and negative assumptions and suggestions, and raising both potential positives and red flags. I raised a couple of doubts which I think are valid. Doesnt mean he wont be a positive signing if he came, that I couldnt be convinced otherwise and if he signed that I wouldnt judge based on that. As I have with Downing and Johnson who both proved me wrong in opposite ways.

Watched The lad in a Sunderland game last season.  Confidently claimed alot of high balls.  Something we've not had for a long time.

Everything about him seems to suggest lower league keeper but that kind of thing with the high balls is something you've got to be good at in league 1.  So if he brings that and can kick and get down at least competently he should be ok here.

Walton can do this ...but can he simply stop straight forward shots on a regular basis which Walton falls down on at times ?

One thing that I would say is that the standard of goalkeeping right across the division is really poor.

He's shown some poor judgement of high balls and crosses a tad too much for me, sometimes not under pressure.

Correct  ..one opinion I ve voiced before ..the standard of "keeping" in this Division ..in fact all Divisions is pretty poor especially British keepers.

Something a few years ago we were pretty solid on .

Agreed. I think we have had a run of poor, inconsistent goalkeepers over the last few years.

Before that, we were largely spoilt with the likes of Sir Roger, Arnold, Gennoe,Flowers and Friedel.

My point was clear,if you know nothing about the player and have not seen them play,dont come on saying they are rubbish,or a "steal". Your last paragraph isn't applicable to my point.
