Current Goalkeeping coach

Recommended Posts

Having watched every  game that our current keeper CW as played i find it very strange on how he actualy attempts to keep the ball out of the net..Now i am not one to call players as they all make mistakes have a bad game  etc but for me CW apears to have paddles on the end of his arms instead of hands which is a big factor for a player that can actualy legaly handle ther ball (in hids box)...I have seen to many ocassions were he could have quite easily have caught the ball gather it and use it to his advantage and i am not talking of 90mph shots at him ..There were yesterday and other matches were he as decided to bat the ball out were a simple catch looked so much easier...Is it me or are the coaches actualy coaching this method ..or am i seeing something that is the norm in the modern game because all i hear myself saying or rather shouting out ......  Fxxxxxx catch the ball as to me it just looked so much easier to do just that...Just excactly is this current goalkeeping coach doing with them ...

I'm not sure that the our Goalkeeper coach is coaching him to punch/flapped at the ball instead of catching it(which I prefer) But something he has been coached from a early age.

When you watch the warm ups before the game he is catching the ball from crosses every time so unsure why he punched the ball

To be honest i am not trying to see he is flapping it's more like he is batting the ball away when it does look (and i have seen it often enough) that a gathering of the ball or catching is easier and can be done ..As said i am not trying to knock him as he is what he is a average championship kee

I would agree with that ...But there are many ocassions i have seen CW push the ball away at midrift level when in my opinion it could have easily have been caught

I agree.

When I used to play football in my younger days I was a keeper. Always caught the ball. Never punch the ball

I think Walton based on hardly glowing recomendations from his Wigan days where he was dropped for some of last season is just not particularly great.

That said, its definitely fair to question our goalkeeping coach baring in mind his non existent CV and a lack of development from any of our goalkeepers under him. You look at Raya and he suddenly has seemingly developed under a new coach.

Speaking as someone who played as a keeper- and actually had a trial at Ewood, as well as playing at town level- I absolutely think that there’s an issue with the keeping coach- he’s never even played the game professionally.

Both Raya (when he was here) and Walton have made some absolutely criminal decisions, when they’ve been our number 1. Raya was also absolutely appalling at kicking, and Walton struggles with crossing/ catching. Neither improved under our keeping coach, and both developed trademark mistakes.

With a proper keeping coach, Raya would have been the finished product (just like he looked on Saturday), rather than Mr. Inconsistent. Walton doesn’t seem to be improving either. We need an ex-professional. Is someone like John Filan or Alan Kelly not available to come in?

A novice keeper coach won't help but let's be honest the main issue has been a chronic lack of good recruitment in terms of keepers going back years now.  Not helped by the penny pinching in defence either, Raya bucked the trend a bit but he was a novice himself literally learning on job. His great reflexes covered for that up to a point but he certainly looks like he's growing into it now.

If you have money to spend and can stand a decent wage there is no excuse not to try and be as strong as possible in one of if not the most important area of any team. Ever since Steele they've wanted keepers they can get cheap/promote grow and sell on for a profit.

So far it's failed miserably, time to wise up although Walton is probably on loan with a view to buy given who his agent is and he fits the criteria. That's the real underlying reason behind not investing in someone decent you can bet on it.

Bring back Bobby Mimms.

I was always under the impression he was very good, he come from Wolves who had at least a couple of very good young keepers at the time and seemed to do well and we seemed to do a lot worse when he left.  It's difficult to tell about coaching from the outside, especially keeper coaches, and we might be doing a real disservice to poor Ben Benson but I'd love to see Bobby back.

I'm of the opinion the other keepers you're training with are as important as the coach if not more so. Training day in day out with someone of calibre if you are their back up or even training with another good keeper similar to yourself.  So it's a straight shoot out as to who is number one can only benefit imo.

Over the past few years at Ewood you really don't have to  be that good to be guaranteed no 1 because there is no one else who will take that jersey permanently.
