Williams is a left back.. always has been.. signed for the club as that.

Actually, he started his career as a CB for Villa and was used on the left-side of back three at Bristol City. So it is a little off to say that he has always been a LB.

He's played most of his games as a left back at rovers I think. Certainly as we got promoted from L1..

I can't agree with you. Sorry.. I think he's a steady Eddie.. never outstanding, but consistent performer.

Never outstanding, you’re right there!

Good enough to be part of a promoted team.

Sorry, you're right. We also will bring Smallwood back iinto centre midfield as he too was part of the promotion squad.

Williams started at left back that season but Bell was signed to replace him. Enough said.

Whoever plays at left-back would be considered a weak link. I'd rather have a player of Downing's ability and experience filling in at the moment as opposed to the alternatives. If he has a complete 'mare, then obviously we might need to rethink that.

Why are you arguing? It's just an opinion. Calm down, it's nearly Xmas xx

You are adding plenty of fuel to the fire yourself, to be fair. Trolling won’t be tolerated from anyone on here, so please don’t make a habit of it.

Jack Marshall specialised in it. As well as Pickering he moved a very average wing half ( midfield player to the kids ) in Andy McEvoy up along side Pickering and created a goal scoring machine. Bryan Douglas was moved from the wing to centre midfield to run the show. Mike Ferguson came as a attacking midfield player and quickly got moved onto the right wing. Mike England started out in midfield but got moved to centre half. Keith Newton moved from centre half to full back. It does make you wonder if managers try players out in different positions these days. Apart from our Tony who does it in competitive matches !

Fred Pickering was an excellent full back. The game he got injured (no subs in those days) he was moved to centre forward for "nuisance value" and scored.

Andy McEvoy was a less-than-average right half who struggled when he replaced an injured Ronnie Clayton. I squirmed when he played because he was so awful. Then, probably due to injury again, he came in at inside right and amazed us all by scoring goals. He became an excellent goal poacher and his partnership with Pickering is now legendary.

My point is that Fred was excellent in both positions whereas Andy was in only one.
