I see the Gruaniad (sic) are running a story with the headline:

Sven-Göran Eriksson: 'Blackburn let me join Lazio. I thank them every day

It is a stark reminder of where we were in the grand scheme of things, how far we have fallen (e.g. worrying about dropping points at Brentford) and what might have been...

Uncle Jack showed his class there. I've heard a few people connected to Rovers - mainly fans to be fair - lambast Sven for his part in it. I take a different view. Yes he had signed a contract and we could have held him to it or sued him over it, but what was the point? And at least he had the balls to approach the club and say "I've changed my mind". I'm glad he is still grateful to Jack for allowing him to tear up that contract.

It's not mentioned in this article, but in Sven's autobiography from a few years ago he said he asked Uncle Jack if he could bring Roberto Mancini with him. He'd have been on big wages but was available for nothing in terms of the transfer fee. Uncle Jack wasn't convinced and blocked any potential deal.

Sven said he was having second thoughts about joining us after that. Then the call from Lazio came and off he went.

Thanks for that, Oldjamfan1 - in my view it was further evidence that we had a proper business set up during those years, which was the key to our ability to 'punch above our weight'. There's a club not far down the M65 who appear to have the model (albeit a six fingered version) in place now. We, in contrast, have the shadows of the past and (relatively for the time being at least) our arses in the air :)!!

Was honestly heartbroken when this fell apart , as a young lad having this exciting foreign coach from Italy was a new dawn. Sadly our back up didn’t turn out too well

Football is an amazing game, but I always look back on those times and think "what if...". We could have really cemented ourselves as a world class team for good if we knew how to.

I was still playing 5 a side around that time so one birthday I treated myself to a real Sampdoria shirt to play in.  " Phonola " was their sponsor then. There was a shop in the Manchester Arndale that sold real replica shirts from all over the world. It was a choice of the Samp shirt or the Napoli shirt with " Buitoni " as the sponsor. Best shirt I ever had quality wise, it was great to play in. I gave it to number 2 son to sell on Ebay when he was hard up. I think it went for £60.

Sadly died today. I was gutted when he changed his mind to come to us, I loved gazzetta football italia on a Sunday and they raved about him, thought it was going to be an exciting new era

He spectacularly failed spectacularly with a once in a generation group of English players. Not to get the likes of G Nev, Rio, Terry, Sol, Ashley Cole, Beckham, Gerrard, Scholes, fat frank, Owen, Rooney past a quarter final was a pathetic effort. Almost unforgivable.

He did well in Italy bu his biggest legacy in this country is that of failure. Seemed like a decent chap though (not being a man of his word and rampant affairs aside).

When you see interviews with that cohort you can almost understand why though. All were consumed by petty club rivalries and international football was almost an afterthought. England were absolutely robbed at Euro 2004 too by woeful refereeing vs Portugal, Campbell's goal should have stood. And then lost in 2002 vs a brilliant Brazil side. Not saying he did well, mind, I was quite young then but remember watching England play was like pulling teeth.

RIP Sven, seems a very likeable person and he got his dreams of being in the Liverpool dugout just a few weeks ago.

I was gutted also cos he was very good club manager in Serie A and I hope he would do the same here. Gazzetta Football Italia was great on a Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon on channel 4.

I'm not usually one to be much affected by 'celebrity' deaths, but Sven Goran Eriksson dying has made me a little sad. He's not much older than my parents, so it's one of those that hits home that little bit closer. 

On top of that, he was England manager during my early teens, that ideal sweet-spot as a football fan. Not only have I never cared more about football or followed it more closely than I did during those times, but it coincided with a good period for Blackburn Rovers during the Souness and Hughes eras and tournaments for England that, whilst ultimately disappointing, were filled with plenty of highs. 

I have such fond memories of the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004 and nothing will probably ever approach them in terms of their significance and the care-free enjoyment that I was able to get out of them. As a result, Sven has a somewhat special place in my own football history. 

What's more, he seemed like a genuinely nice man. It was hard not to be touched by how excited he was to manage Liverpool for a friendly match last season. To have achieved so much within the game and still maintain that level of enthusiasm for that kind of opportunity is rare.

A very sad end to quite a remarkable life and career, but he handled it with the same charm that was ever-present through his various managerial positions and turmoil.

Would have been interesting to see how he'd have fared at Ewood, but it wasn't to be.

A good man (if the most unlikely serial shagger of all time), by all accounts.

Not sure about approaching the club first.

For weeks, it was all over the tabloids that he did not want to honour his contract with Rovers.

This allowed the press to portray the club, as an undesirable place to work. I saw it it as giving them a stick with which to beat Rovers, in the context of press resentment that this "upstart" club  had dared to topple Man Utd.
