Republic of Ireland 11

Out of boredom I’m looking to put together Rovers best Republic of Ireland 11. Here’s a quick try below.  Am I forgetting any notable players? ??

Keeper: Shay Given

Defence: Jeff Kenna, Kevin Moran, Darragh Lenihan, Derrick Williams

Midfield: Damien Duff, Jason McAteer, Keith Andrews, Alan Mahon

Strikers: Frank Stapleton, Leon Best

Leon bloody Best, he should be in all time worst 11. Mick McGrath was twice the player that either of McAteer or Andrews was. Central midfield should be Rogers and McGrath.  Have you never heard of Andy McEvoy ? Up there with Jimmy Greaves and Denis Law in the goal scoring charts back in the day. A real top striker, him and Stapleton would be my front two

Even with just one winger, as long as that winger is good enough, he will cause problems . I wish our present management could embrace this idea.

Agreed except Duff would be playing in front of Beglin and Reid in front of Kenna.

And, was Given better than Alan Kelly?

Fun fact (though that's a matter of opinion): I used to work with Andy McEvoy's nephew or cousin at DHL when I first moved to Coventry.

Andy was a true great, he made his name as an assassin in the penalty but he was a really good all around footballer. We were playing Arsenal in a top the table clash. When I got to the ground the word was Bryan Douglas was injured ! " Bloody Hell, we're stuck now " I thought. Anyway when the teams were announced Andy was playing in Dougie's place as a playmaker with a young kid in Andy's place. I shouldn't have worried, Dougie was hardly missed because Andy was great in that position and he still managed to get on the score sheet in a 4-1 win. For those interested big Fred Pickering got the other three.

Now I know the mods get sensitive about anything that could be construed, as political, but a Rovers "united Ireland" team would be interesting...Off the top of my head,..Allan Hunter, Derek Dougan, Jimmy Quinn..

Allan Hunter would get in it, with Kevin Moran. Dougan shouldn't be selected for disciplinary reasons. Keith Gillespie ?

Dougan was also UKIP and a Bring Back Hanging campaigner!

I only remember him playing for Wolves, but the Wembley fitness/ transfer thing certainly takes some forgiving!

Football and fairness are funny, though.

My Dubliner wife never forgot how hurt we all were about the way Chris Price left Rovers for Villa and found it inconceivable that he returned to the club and was allowed to play at Wembley, while Simon Garner wasn't!

I’d take Brotherston ahead of the bookies’ favourite.

I knew I had forgotten someone. One of my favourite Rovers players of all time.

I remember being so proud for him, when George Best was on the commentary team for an international and referred to "Noel Brotherston's magic."

He was some player on his day. I remember Northern Ireland playing him in a deeper role for the home international championship . More midfield than out on the wing and he was outstanding.

I think like a lot of players - the more you could get him into the game the better he was.

I hadn't heard of some of the guys mentioned, thanks for the heads up.

                      Given

Kenna Moran Lenihan Cunningham

               Reid Rogers

 Duff             McEvoy           Brotherson

                  Stapelton

Not a bad 3 behind the striker. The 2 centre halves wouldn't be afraid of a scrap!

Brotherston was Northern Irish, unless your going for a combined team there?

Remember really routing for Ireland at USA 94 with no home nations present, that Ray Houghton goal against Italy.

Ya, combined and for some reason I put George Best-I am clearly distracted!

Ya , that was a great tournament. Unfortunate goalkeeping error against the Netherlands was a killer. We did well considering the heat.
