I remember the United game Fred mentions very well. We’d been starved of football for what seemed like an age. Eventually the day dawned and we actually saw a game of football. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon after all the ice, snow and gloom.

My abiding memory is of both teams giving Fred Pickering a guard of honour as he came into the pitch, he’d got married earlier that day !

My other memory is of more Man Utd generosity. Later in the second half Rovers were attacked the Blackburn End and the attack broke down. Harry Gregg in the Utd goal got the ball and threw it out to Albert Quixall in the Utd midfield. At that moment Fred Pickering was bent down tying up a loose boot lace. Quixall  dithered on the ball a bit and then turned and passed the ball back to Gregg. At that moment Fred stood up, the ball went straight to him. As good as a pass as we used to say. Fred just swivelled onto the ball and banged it straight into the back of the net !
I was stood right behind the goals at the Blackburn end and I had a great view of the cock up. Shades of todays “ playing out from the back “

This is a great picture of away fans arriving in Barnsley 1980's and waiting to be escorted by police to Oakwell.

No idea who it is, but I’m sure it’s an experience we’ve all endured hundreds of times:
