Wigan Administration

With their points deduction in mind Wigan winning on Wednesday would give them a max of 49 points (if the deduction is applied). They also need one of Luton or Charlton to lose or draw - they are ahead of both on GD by a significant margin. Charlton are away to Leeds and Luton, of course, play us.

Fulham have something to play for as well, slim chance but still a chance they can finish second

Should be some game with a draw being no good for either

Charlton equaliser and Luton winner put Wigan back in the mangle.

That game home to Fulham could turn into a blood bath.

Don't think the southern softies will fancy it.

My money is on Cooky's Wigan.

We'll send Wigan down by losing at Luton.

Weird goings on this evening. Reports that EFL to deduct the points NEXT season.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8542283/amp/Wigan-Sheffield-Wednesday-AVOID-relegation-Championship.html?__twitter_impression=true

Then just minutes later the EFL rush out a statement saying they will still get deducted THIS season pending an appeal, so sticking to their original statement -

‘If in the event the Club is relegated by virtue of their final position following the conclusion of the Championship season, then the deduction will apply in League One in 2020/21. However, if the Club is not in the relegation places following the final game of season, the sanction will be then be applied to their season 2019/20 total and final league standings amended as appropriate.’

The Mail report can’t possibly be true, as the EFL wouldn’t make rules up as they go along.

Another farcical episode from this inept organisation

At the end of the day Wigan have gained an advantage by going into administration. Their owner might not have passed that advantage on to the club but entering administration enables a club to avoid paying all its dues.

Why should Wigan be allowed another year of Championship football, the income and profile that comes with it, whilst a Barnsley go down instead who have paid their debts as they fall due?

There's a bigger issue at stake here than 'poor Wigan fans'. Its about the integrity of the division.

Same applies to Sheffield Wednesday who have clearly fiddled the system deliberately to gain a financial advantage. Their sponsors don't even exist!

Subject to appeal, that could be a long process.

It's a recipe for chaos.

This season should be done and dusted on Wednesday night and any punishments dished out next season.  some might not think fair but after coronavirus, football very quickly needs clarity and certainty.

Yep but the deduction will be this season or never if they win at appeal

Can you show everyone where Wigan have gained any advantage and who any dues need to be paid to.

Wigan were in the exact same position that Blackburn are, reliant on a foreign investor introducing funds into the club to keep it functioning. Until a month ago when the owner did not honour an agreement he had made with Whelan on his sale of the club by introducing a set amount of money into the club they owed no one any money, all bills have been paid to date, there was no outstanding VAT or Tax to pay

Despite the overall dislike by your fans of the Venky's, they have allowed you to spend money on players and wages above your income and continue to do so, there for the grace of god it wasn't a crook like Stanley Choi that bought you.

If Wigan avoid any sanction for entering administration and are allowed to stay on 58 points and in doing so survive in the Championship then somewhere along the line there will have been an advantage.

That is the idea of administration. It enables clubs to work through their debts and clear them usually at a loss to their creditors.

It is for this reason the League introduced the automatic points deduction. The aim being to deter clubs from simply entering administration whenever they wanted, and being allowed to continue uninterrupted in the League without sanction.

Ultimately as you say Wigan rely upon a benefactor model as do Rovers. For whatever reason the bloke in Hong Kong has pulled the plug on that but the end result is the same - that Wigan currently have a cost base too high for its natural income and now an owner not prepared to cough up the difference. The likes of Luton and Barnsley have smaller wage bills and losses and less reliance on owners.

At the end of the day at Rovers we are fully aware of the reliance on Venkys for funds and the risks to the club if they suddenly decided to stop. But if they did plunge us into administration then I would fully expect the 12 point sanction. If I supported a rival club I would expect it do. Without a sanction we could effectively wipe the slate clean, pass the club on in reasonable health to new owners and be no worse off in the table for it.

Meanwhile a Luton or Barnsley could, in theory, go bust if they go down to League One because the mandatory deduction isn't imposed.

You actually have my sympathies especially if something dodgy has gone on. I know all about potentially sinister foreign ownership and what can come with it. You are right that Venkys have allowed the show to continue so far but we are only a recommendation or board meeting away from disaster here.

But looking at the League overall there simply has to be a consistent enforcement of the rules. It is the failure to enforce rules that has meant Ffp has failed before it even started as Derby and Sheffield Wednesday have been able to ride over it all without punishment.

I've not followed it closely but have seen comments on twitter about there not being any significant creditors.

If they don't have debts and don't owe HMRC a load of money (which most clubs normally do in administration), then from a Wigan fans perspective what is the reasoning they have done this?
