Anyone kidding themselves into thinking Mowbray won't play him every week for another season is probably living in hope more than expectation. There's arguments for a Cunningham return, or an out of favour Barry Douglas at Leeds following their promotion, but Rovers and Tony don't invest in defenders, and we should all know that by now. Rovers and Bowyer didn't invest in defenders either, nor did Rovers and Lambert or Rovers and Coyle. Strange. One consistent? Those who control the purse strings. All conspiracy theories of course. Mattyblue Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 Have we ever spent more than a few hundred thousand on a defender or keeper under this regime? Our first choice defensive unit this season was: Walton/Nyambe/Cunningham/Lenihan/Toisin. Not a single transfer fee. That goes up to £300k with Bell in for Cunningham. Quite startling when we splurge £12 million on two very raw forwards. 2 Quote

Suppose if you're being charitable we have actually proceeded more than our fair share of young defenders who were of a decent level in Nyambe, Hanley and Lenihan. Beyond that, you're probably looking at Duffy who was what, 400k? Quote
Mattyblue Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 No real surprise then that we’ve largely bumped along at this level for nearly a decade... 1 Quote
Burrells Boy Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 Strange the investment for defenders when you consider the transfer fee for Phil Jones. 2 Quote

Quite startling when we splurge £12 million on two very raw forwards. If memory serves correct, we've only spent £300k (Amari Bell) on defence in the whole of Venky's tenure. Without checking, perhaps you could add Shane Duffy to that list. A total spend at that level on goalkeepers and defenders in 10 years is not just a coincidence. I stand corrected if I'm inaccurate. And Hanley, Duffy. I think even O'Connell was rumoured to be about 500k and he had only played one League Cup game. Very odd that we never really put anything back in when we've recouped so much from defenders and also shown they can be profitable. 1 Quote
Wing Wizard Windy Miller Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 I think any team that has a reasonable budget for next year should be able to make some better than average signings this summer. There will be a lot of out of contract players pretty desperate for a start. Not the window to go into on the verge of failing FFP.??♂️ 1 Quote
tomphil Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 (edited) Put your money upfront and hope they bang a few in then you can double it in a quick turnaround. Both Dack and Armstrong should bring in far more than was paid for them. Rudy, well unbelievable profit in a short time. Rhodes 8 mill in, about 12 million out so about 1 mill per year profit in his time here ? Not hard to see what the 'investors' are up to really. They've hit the buffers with their latest round of advice though. Edited July 11, 2020 by tomphil 1 Quote
Guest Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 It baffles me how people that are rightly upset over our lack of investment in defence (which they should be), can clamour for us to throw Scott Wharton into the Starting XI next season ? Quote

Has anyone said to put him into the starting 11? Genuine question as if so I have missed it and of course would disagree. Or just to consider having him within the squad following successful loan spells and in tbe absence of any other competent back up. 6 Quote

neophox Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 (edited) Travis, Armstrong, Nyambe, Dack, Lenihan, Gallagher are all players that will attract interest in the window. Sadly one of them may need to sell. Heard that Palace interested in Gally. Graham, Samuel, Smallwood, Downing and Leutwiler contracts to expire. Expect we keep Samuel and Downing on a year. Then think Williams, Johnson, Bennett and Chapman are not good enough. BELL got an year more so will stay. Think Buckley, Brennan, Rankin-Costello, Hilton Davenport, and Carter will get more minutes next season. But are they good enough to compete for a top place. Seems we are going to be more and more a mid table team that sells our own products in the future. What happened to Magloire? Hopefully Brereton will have a big season. Does Holtby have a contract next season? Walton and Tosin to leave. Edited July 11, 2020 by neophox Quote

Where have you heard Palace are interest in Gallagher?. Quote
