Any clever ones amongst you.? i might be getting old but my 16 year old shocked me by working this out in less than 30 seconds....

Am i thick or is he a genius?

Answers on a postcard

IMG-20200718-WA0001.jpg

1) 9 + 9 + 3 = 21

2) 3 x (1+2+3+4)

3 x 10 = 30

Can't get the bulb one though? Only logical answer is the bulb = 15.

(2 x 15) - 15 = 15.

In which case

Answer: 9 + (1+2+2+4) x (3x15)

BODMAS means it is 9 + (9 x 45)

= 9 + 405 = 414.

It is 333 mate, good try though....you must be like me, I couldnt work it out even when shown the workings.... This has stumped a few doctors and medics so anyone getting near is doing very well.

Finally, thanks to the workings of others, I have worked out the answer. Thank God I don’t go to school now.

SPOILER ALERT

The light bulbs are what usually catch people out. 1 Bulb + 1 Bulb - 1 Bulb = 15.

Cancelling out the + and -; we get 1 Bulb with five lights = 15.

Therefore, one bulb with one light = 3

Bulb with 4 lights = 4 x 3 = 12

Therefore the final equation is -   9'o clock + Calulator (1+2+2+4) x 3 bulbs (with four light rays each)

Translating the final equation into numbers - 9 + (1+2+2+4) x 3(12)

9 + (9 x 36) = 9 + 324 = 333

No way.  9+9x36=648

It did when I was at school. No brackets there!!!

If you want the answer to be 333 then you have to express it as

9 +( 9 x 36).  There are no brackets in the original puzzle.

So the doctor's wrong. No matter. I don't expect my GP to be a brilliant mathematician. I expect him/her to be a brilliant doctor.

I love it when someone gives a wrong answer with such spectacular confidence ?

Then I was right all along. I’m not as thick as I thought I was after all ?
