He's also not THAT young.

He'll turn 24 next season and he's already played a lot, as you point out. There's not much improvement to be expected.

It reminds me a bit of the clip of Mourinho discussing Rashford. Dolan already has so much experience that you can't expect further experience to really improve him unless he is to play at a higher level/standard.

There's no reason to think that another 100 Championship matches will radically see what we get out of him now. Over the 30ish matches we get from him a season we will get 10 good, 10 bad, 10 average and we will see an end product of 10 goals/assists.

That's fine, but his limitations are serious enough that he should be viewed as a squad player.

Given that what Dolan mostly gets criticised for is decision-making, and he has the right attitude to the game, I'd argue he could still improve through more experience. It may just click one day, how to read situations differently.

Maybe, but I can't think of many players who continue to improve after 200+ first team appearances when they haven't shown continual improvement throughout that time.

He will likely get a bit better, but not by much.

So, an ideal impact sub.

I like him as a squad player and he can definitely do a job as either a sub or a player starting in the right situations, but I fear that he will expect to be paid as a starter and that would almost certainly be too much.

Anyone know what his current contract is? Seem to think it is well below the level of other players in our squad that could be considered comparable (pretty much guaranteed starter or worst case sub if totally out of form)?

Quite simply if he is being offered less than Buckley or JRC then i have full respect for him not even engaging in the discussion although i think any move will be to a mid - lower level championship team (possibly a newly promoted team if they have some money)

He's improved a lot this season so people saying there's no room for improvement is baseless. If he's heard about the criticism it's a great shame but football fans can lack understanding so it's no surprise. They often shoot themselves in the foot with things like this.

Who’s shot themselves in the foot? A dozen or so folk on an obscure message board criticising him will be part of his future career decision making? Aye, ok!

Got to do better than that, Bradders. 😀

You act as though people don't get on his back at games whenever he makes a mistake

If he goes, I hope for his sake he has a better agent than Ryan Nyambe had! Dolan will leave with a similar amount of appearances as Nyambe did, probably a more recognised name in the league though.

It's an interesting comparison, but I think that Nyambe was a 'bigger' name. Nyambe had a genuine moment of being a bit of a talked about prospect. Dolan has never had that.

I would genuinely be intrigued where he goes. If I remember rightly Nyambe didn't actually get a club until the next season started.

Richard Brown....Keith Andrews..Jimmy Quinn..Tony Finnegan....Darren Collyer....How I could go on...

I only know if the Keith Andrews stuff but that was grim. The "well that's what it's like it could be worse" normalisation is pathetic tbh. Nobody wants to take any responsibility for creating a negative atmosphere even though people pretend it's about supporting the team despite the ownership. "That's just the way it is" is regressive

Ewood Park in 2025 is not a difficult environment in which to be a footballer, however it is not and never will be like a day at a Lord’s test match, that’s just the demographics of football crowds (I know, I l know what a bunch of oiks they are, but alas we can’t sack the fans).

It will all be relative and not feel that way to the person on the receiving end. Young players jeered by their own fans has an impact. Nobody believes it can be solved overnight but being so blasé and providing other examples of worse experiences only serves to normalise the current stuff. It would be far more useful to create some form of pushback to that behaviour (ideally in the stadium) as at some point it will hopefully change.
