But Sky Sports couldnt have seemingly chosen 2 less educated and less informed pundits in regards to a Championship club in Brentford and a recently promoted Premier League club in Jamie Redknapp and Paul Merson. Considering the amount that they charge (I think I have a good deal getting the sports package on Now TV for £25) the regularity in which the pundits fundamentally do not know what they are talking about is crazy. The pre match coverage consisted of Merson dismissing Benrahmas value "because you can get Barkley on loan instead and Benrahma didnt even show up at Wembley" and then the pair trying to figure out exactly what Antonee Robinson was in terms of a left back based on a brief montage having clearly never seen him prior. Sky seem to have had a cull this summer but I am not sure how Jamie Redknapp and Paul Merson survived it, and indeed what the likes of Akinfenwa who has been on Championship duty despite not knowing various fairly well known names is beyond me. What do people think about the standard of punditry in general? Roy Keane is a bit of a guilty pleasure in spite of his presence purely to cause friction, and its difficult not to like Souness and Shearer. In general, the actual knowledge behind it seems to be on the wane. Hargreaves is decent on BT sports, refreshing to have what used to be a standard ie a bit of actual knowledge, and they do have more expert analysis albeit usually of other European leagues, although the commentary of Steve McManaman is as aggravating as Jamie Redknapps punditry. Completely agree regarding last night. Merson was awful as a pundit. Normally I just switch off regardless who is in the studio, but I actually stopped to take note last night as he was making very little sense. There's a big difference between what Merson is asked to do on Soccer Saturday (which I admit I don't mind him on), and being sat in a studio giving serious, professional punditry on games. Quote

True on Soccer Saturday, that has always lived on that vibe of old players having a laugh together, indeed blatant incompetence such as Kamara missing red cards and Merson unable to pronounce names has always been part of its supposed charm. They seem keen to move away from that now but I think it has just become confused. Not sure how Merson has survived the cull either. Quote
Mattyblue Posted October 2, 2020 Posted October 2, 2020 Soccer Saturday as a premise is 4 ex pros being watched as they watch football... for about 6 hours. So of course it needs to be light hearted with them bouncing off each other, not earnest tactical discussion all day long (not that the new panelists can offer that either) but as you say, Sky seem to have forgot what the show’s USP is, diversity quotas need to be met, I suppose... 2 Quote

No time for that pillock. All be does is laugh at his own comments and say 'it's just incredible' whenever he's talking about Kevin De Bruyne or City in general. 2 Quote
bazza Posted October 2, 2020 Posted October 2, 2020 It took Chris Sutton a long time to become a pundit. He now has a regular slot on 606. I never liked the bloke during his football career; his character that is. But as a radio pundit I think he's great. Now Roy Keane shouldn't be allowed on TV. The man is boring; no charisma whatsoever. Quote
roversfan99 Posted October 2, 2020 Author Posted October 2, 2020 (edited) Yeah, the amount of shite that Martin Tyler comes out with. Hes had his day. Edited October 2, 2020 by roversfan99 Quote

Yes, we know you ____. We pay an effing fortune to see it you mong. Depends how much you are paying watch it. I'm paying £21 a month for the Sky Sports Channels which I think is a bargain considering all the sport I watch.. Quote

It's not about how good you are, it's about your face fitting and who you know. Just look at Redknapp - he's awful, but has been a SKY pundit forever. Carragher spat at a child and kept his job. 4 Quote

Fair enough on value but do you think Martin Tyler is anything but an irritating commentator that should step aside? Quote
Mattyblue Posted October 3, 2020 Posted October 3, 2020 I always thought Tyler was one of the all time great commentators, but have to agree, the last few years his commentaries have just become 90 minutes of him rambling and going off on tangents. 2 Quote

No I don't think Martin Tyler is all irritating commentator at all. Great experience and knowledge. I think what I paid for my overall Sky package is a bargain at the minute. Plus Netflix and Amazon packages aswell. Quote
roversfan99 Posted October 3, 2020 Author Posted October 3, 2020 Great experience knowledge but also massively irritating and well beyond the line of enthusiasm and being a sky sports obsessive. Mick McCarthy is a good commentator, liked him back in the World Cup. Quote
Backroom Mike E Posted October 3, 2020 Backroom Posted October 3, 2020 I thought Martin O'Neill was a good pundit at the 2014 World Cup for ITV, often putting know-nowt World Cup winners (Cannavaro and Vieira) in their places. Memorably: 'I've not won the World Cup, and Fabio reckons I've never played. But I've won 2 European Cups, how many have you superstars won?' Quote

AllRoverAsia Posted October 3, 2020 Posted October 3, 2020 Tyler is still a top commentator and always has been plus he has tended to speak well of Rovers. There's really only 1 pundit I cannot abide, He's on MOTD and its not Alan. 1 Quote
Oldgregg86 Posted October 3, 2020 Posted October 3, 2020 I’ve always enjoyed martin Tyler’s commentary . Still do being honest. But every now and again he’s started throwing in random things like Andy Carroll with a header. He’s he gets his hair cut at the same hairdressers as David Ghandi . It’s just unnecessary imo. But his voice I’ve grown up with and still love his style so I let things like that slide lol Quote

He should've kept up his 'treat women like shit in public' schtick, he could've been President by now. But he was a great pundit. I liked his half-hour tactics show after SuperSunday too.
