Of course they were the first club to benefit from the "champions" league qualifying for 98/99 as runners up to Arsenal. Real fair play there UEFA! Your wrong the first season when countries had more than one club qualify was 97/98. The English beneficiary that year was Newcastle. Quote

Darrenbot Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 It's not about who's the best teams in Europe being invited,it's more whos the teams with the biggest revenues that could be generated, thats why 6 English teams are invited as they are supported worldwide.even if United had been bad for the last 20 years they'll always be one of the first teams invited into one of these competitions. 3 Quote
Stuart Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 http://news.sky.com/story/european-premier-league-plans-are-further-proof-that-greed-is-now-the-driving-force-of-football-12109430 Have to laugh. Sky are now complaining about greed in football. They started this whole gravy train!! I can only infer that streaming services are most likely to get TV rights. Top flight football is currently proving that they don’t need fans at matches. TV football is the future. No stadia required. Just walls of fan cams sat on their sofas being censored every time they take a swig of a beer that isn’t part of the match sponsorship! Quote

Mattyblue Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 A non starter I would think. Bit of a political play with UEFA by the clubs, so the ‘reformed’ Champions League due to start in 2024 will be a European Super (Premier?) League in all but name. Quote

I think vinjay is correct with Man Utd being the first club to benefit from the runners up going into the champions league, but you are correct with the season. So your both wrong (and correct!). LWX Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Rovers finished 4th in 92/93 and missed out on a EUFA Cup spot, I'm pretty sure the next season that was enough for Europe. Villa? Newcastle? Liverpool? I can't remember who it would have been. Quote

Yes, apologies you are indeed correct, 97/98 was the first season where runners up were allowed in, I got confused that it was the 97/98 season where it was first introduced! Quote
Stuart Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 Just like always. The rules are always changed to accommodate the big clubs. Quote
