We seemingly didnt allow Williams to join Swansea due to an inability to match our fee, but Williams has always been below the quality required to go where we supposedly want to go, and he has always had repeated injury problems and an aura of a player who you would not want beside you on the trenches.

To replace a departing centre back who pretty much was available every week last season with one solitary replacement with serious injury problems was negligent whichever way you look at it. We have Lenihan, Ayala and Williams all with serious injury histories, if we was to go down the route of signing Ayala and not selling Williams, which was risky, surely you'd sign one more rather than signing TWO central midfielders, one who has had minimal impact in Trybull and one in Downing who Mowbray doesnt seem to consider for starts. There is no defence (ironically) for such negligence and no excuses.

Either way, a third summer in a row passed with a failure to assemble a defence capable of having the quality and depth to last the season and keep the goals out.

Mowbray didnt even know if he was going to keep Wharton around at the start of the season!

If Swansea couldnt afford the fee then they cant have him.

Ayala injury record is poor.

Lenihan has barely missed a game in the last 18 months due to injury so his problems seem over now.

Yes it's fair point about signing an extra midfielder might not be needed. But 4 centre backs in a match squad should be enough really in most cases. Sadly it is not in our class.

Not when at least 2 are made of glass and one was a kid Mowbray didnt trust at that time. Poor recruitment again compounded by Douglas not being up to it.

He's yet to sign a good defender in the 4 years he's been at the club. (with the possible exception of Cunningham). Pretty damning really.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't. Didn't see you posting before the transfer window ended we need 5th centre back.

Most people were happy with Ayala and Douglas signings when they signed

Great goal by Dack today. You still think he shouldn't be in the team?

Its not a wonderful thing when hes failed to fix the defence time after time. How people perceived them at the time is irrelevant.

Kipre isn't even amongst the subs tonight, I would say its a fair bet someone has a deal lined up for him.

Just away to post that. Would imagine he will be a Rover by the end of the week, and a much needed signing.

PL? Are Middlesbrough completely out of players?

Some twitterites suggesting Phil Jones.

Can't see how we would afford Jones. Take him in a heartbeat though if he was available, interested and affordable.

Personally I think in terms of numbers we were fine on centre backs. The mistake was signing Ayala.

Lenihan, Wharton, William's and one more competent centre back without a history of injuries would have been fine. We didn't need 5, we just needed 4 with an element of reliability.

Is he fit nowadays?

Also maybe a Man Utd centre back on loan like Timothy Fosu-Mensah or Axel Tuanzebe could be options for us

Fosu-Mensah rejected a new contract and will probably be looking to sort a permanent deal away as he'll be available on a free.

Wow he hasn't played since last season, and in 19/20 he only managed 8 games. That's shocking....

So, um, I guess no?

Rather have a more modest player who actually is fit.

Didn't we sign Douglas?

True but he's been terrible!

Who was the last good perm player we signed for the defence? Need to go back to Duffy I think? Williams has been okay in patches but has bad spells and a lot of injuries. Bell is not as bad as some make out but he's not good.

Oh Mulgrew you could argue, but he wasn't really a defender even though he played there... Great when dominating teams in league 1 but not up to much in the Championship where he actually had to defend.

We've been lucky Lenihan and Nyambe came through the academy.

Just the two and a half more years of Ayala’s contract to go 😯.

My mate Nobby, says he is always wary of these signings from Boro, especially when they involve

long contracts..............££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££.

Of course I couldn't possibly comment.

I’d go for Tomori at Chelsea, available on loan

I’ll have a pint of what you’re having pal. I’d imagine the majority of the PL and half of Europe would be in for him.
