windymiller7
Weren't there rumours or suggestions on here a few weeks ago that Neil was on his way here? His sacking would certainly make that prospect more attractive to Venkys if there was anything in it given that there'd be no compo to pay.

Its was @Mercer who said a family member had told him that Neil will be Rovers manager shortly/next few months. Maybe Mercer could give us an update?

I would imagine they, like you, want to have a replacement or replacements lined up for immediately after Mowbray gets potted. They, like you, don't want to name Johnson as caretaker. The more extensive the planned changes, the longer it takes to arrange everything. If they are ditching HSH, that will cost money and take time, too. These changes are things Venkys can't mess up and so it's one time I don't really begrudge the time, though as a fan, I'd like it done faster. It was alleged by that Crook dude from Lancs Live in twitter correspondence I think. Something along the lines of "owners understood to be unhappy by recent results but not known if they're ready to make a change yet etc" I.e. doing a Nixon and hedging his bets so he can't be wrong either way no matter what happens.

Paul Mellelieu
I wouldn't be against Neil joining: we need some new blood and ideas, but he wasn't a world-beater at PNE and I'm not sure he would be the man to get us promoted.

I agree, personally I'd take him over Mowbray tomorrow to get the latter out of the door but I wouldn't be completely ecstatic about the appointment. Still, even if he was another Don Mackay, who got us to several play offs and failed that would still be a massive leap forwards from where we are now.
Popular Post JHRover
10 hours ago, chaddyrovers said: I suggested Bowen more of a head coach figure with a sporting Director above him like Mike Rigg. If Wilder is off to Celtic as @Paul Mani has said then wipe him name of the list. Perhaps Hughes and Neil would be the 2 leading favourites for the job if we have a vacancy this week Ainsworth and Robins both have 2 promotions on the CV's and knows what it takes to get promotion. I suggested Lee Carsley cos he might be a hidden gem similar to Steve Cooper at Swansea. Who thought he would have done so well. Davidson has just won a trophy at St. Johnstone in his 1st season as manager. Can't see Rovers paying Jokanovic's reported salary demands. I understand why you suggested him Carvalhal ain't leaving Braga to come here when they are 1 point of champions League place and only 4 points off top of the league. Would you move? On Oscar Garcia, He never stayed longer than a year at any club apart from Red Bull Salzburg, so why Without an experience Sporting Director at the club. I can't see anyone at the club knowing much about Overseas managers or head coaches available. unless we use an agent. The Owners could have bought in Sporting Director/head coach structure many seasons ago and stick with it but they don't. They have appoint people but never for longer than a season like Paul Senior, Simon Hunt, Shebby Singh. why Stendal? sacked at Barnsley and Hearts? For me the list decreases by the week with other clubs taking action and making moves for managers that we should be interested in. Presumably we then get the buffoons online saying 'who can we get'? etc. when we've watched numerous good, sensible, available options all get snapped up elsewhere. In the last 12 months we could have had Warnock, McCarthy, Pearson, Cowley, Bowyer, Cook, Ismael, Hughton and others who would all have done better here than Mowbray is/has done. Right now the obvious sensible options are very limited. I'd investigate the Hughes one but would tread carefully given his situation. I'd certainly speak to Alex Neil and think he would be a good option at least for a couple of seasons, but sounds like he is on Aberdeen's hit list. I do think Garry Monk could do a reasonable job and probably better than Mowbray having worked at two crisis clubs recently but I'd also have concerns about the fact he doesn't ever last over a year anywhere. Gary Rowett would be high on my list but would require compensation and a good budget to get him out of Millwall neither of which these owners will cough up. He's got them well above us despite vastly inferior resources and is on a cushy secure number there so would need a much better package to walk out. I'm honestly struggling then off the top of my head for good options. I'm very reluctant or hesitant to start banging the drum for Scottish based managers due to impressive records or reputations up there. Examples - Alan Stubbs was excellent at Hibs, dire at Rotherham. Derek McInnes very successful with Aberdeen and St Johnstone, rubbish at Bristol City. Robbie Neilson - brilliant record with Hearts twice and Dundee Utd but couldn't make a do at MK Dons. Even Neil Lennon - trophies galore and success with Celtic and Hibs but failed at Bolton (albeit in difficult circumstances). It's a very different way. In terms of the foreign options people like Carvalhal and Jokanovic would be viable options if we were prepared to pay to get them and back them. You need to sell these managers the project and offer them the backing to deliver on it, not just baulk at the asking price. If it gets you promoted it is worth the asking price. If I were paid what Waggott is I could spend hours and hours scouring German, Eastern European, Serbian, Dutch leagues for up and coming managers worth looking at but I haven't the time or the salary to do that. Neither does Waggott presumably as his remit as CEO is to flog our training ground but sit idly by and do nothing about horrific results.

Neil is a significantly better manager than Mowbray, but you do wonder whether he'd want to come here. He won't get the same financial backing Mowbray got - in actuality he'd probably find himself in a similar situation to PNE, having to get buy on freebies and loans as his more desirable players are sold off. Obviously here it would be due to FFP rather than the owners trying to claw their money back. That's the problem any new manager is going to face after Mowbray's 4 years on Easy Street.
