What are you listening to right now?

Been a while since I posted on here, but quite an old tune that I have been listening to quite a lot recently:

If you are a fan of Mungos Hi Fi you'll know they have been releasing bangers for years now.

Gardna and Charli Brix are now based in Bristol - the new home of all things electronic in the UK. London died years ago. Charli Brix's voice was made for music like this

Bristol is home to the record label "Born on Road", where dub music meets DNB and Jungle. Saw their set at Boomtown which blew the place apart.

@K-Hod @Dreams of 1995 Think you two been in to this sort of stuff in the past.

Kenny,  u introduced me to bicep, for which I'm eternally grateful.

Full set, no adverts. Particularly highlights for me are 27mins in when he freestyles on the piano, and 1hr 25 min, the track with Skrillex.

Aye, Fred Again is quality mate.

It’s an older one, but if you like this one, there’s a Jamie XX Boiler Room set on a rooftop in London, where he pretty much just plays music by artists from London.

One of my go to mixes, that one!

Will check it out. 2014 looks like?

Tried a Fred Again Boiler Room club set, but it was a bit hard for me. Prefer the lighter, more vocal stuff.

Been listening to this absolute belter

Phenomenal stuff from John McGeoch.

I remember years ago in the Napier some guy, who strangely looked like Howard Devoto, would always enthusiastically tell me about how great Magazine were and that I should listen to them.

They were pretty great to be fair.

I'm going through a Roxy Music phase at the moment, some of the early stuff was superb, brash, abbrasive sounds and nothing like the later stuff which put more off for years.

They released the self titled 'Roxy Music' in 1972, for a debut album its superb. They then went on to relsease 'For your Pleasure' which is also a great album.

They weren't glam rock like Bowie, who was in the charts at the time, but the music was great in an era where anything went!

I actually really like the later stuff. It was way ahead of it's time.

One of the rare occasions where every release by an artist is essential.

I think the early stuff fits that general description UD. But it’s a great listen to be honest.

Also spent this evening listening to Linda Ronstadt, what a voice, part of the  Laurel Canyon set.

I got a box set a few years ago  - “ The SAR story “. SAR was Sam Cooke’s record label. I’ve gone back to that recently.

I started following the Stones in the early 60’s, but it wasn’t until I looked up who had originally written/sung their cover versions that I came across The Valentino’s original version of It’s All Over Now, which is on the SAR story. For me, both versions are excellent and reflect the times they were released.

Yeah, Bobby Womack was in The Valentinos. Their version of “ Looking For A Love “ is on the box set that The J Geils Band covered later. Along with “ Soothe Me “ by The Sims Twins that Sam and Dave did later.

I had all the early Stones stuff by the original artists on vinyl  back in the day. “ Honest I Do “ by Jimmy Reed, “ I’m A King Bee “ by Slim Harpo “, “ Susie-Q “ Dale Hawkins, “ Good Thing Going “ by Barbara Lynn etc

I remember seeing Roxy Music in Ranmoor Hall at Sheffield University in October 1972. The foresighted events committee at the hall had booked them for Freshers Week in the early Summer. Then they brought out this album and suddenly they were all over everywhere. Fair play to them, they honoured the gig, which was absolutely rammed. The woman who is now my wife was also there, although we didn't know each other then.

I was at the Botanical Gardens a few weeks ago, just down the road.

A similar story I guess, but The Courteeners played in The Celler Bar in Blackburn just as they exploded in Manchester, a free gig, which we went to in front of 100 people tops. They honoured the gig and have been coming back to Blackburn ever since, whilst playing much bigger venues like Heaton Park.

Plenty of Boiler Room sets are good.

Gorgon city did a class set during lockdown, Released Done enough and So hooked on your lovin a few month later and everyone was in raptures because they heard them first on the lockdown set. Covid had its perks

Beautiful voice Dolores O'Riordan, sadly a troubled soul who took her own life.

Ruled accidental.

Like Matthew Perry from Friends.

His being drug related, and hers alcohol.

Happens too often. Really wish people that indulged would steer clear of any water when alone.

Pass out on a bed/couch and odds on you wake up to battle the addiction again.

Water doesn't grant that 2nd chance.

Dave Clarke played an awesome one. If you’re a fan of bicep, their boiler room from AVA is excellent. Also the Mark Archer one is very good if you miss the 90s 🥹

I’ll have to check out that record label, that’s just the sort of thing I’m into. Never knew much about mungos hi fi until I heard a mr scruff mix with them on it.
