Normally this sort of performance and result would be met with anger, disappointment, frustration, bickering, arguments, bannings...

 

And here we have a Mercer inspired BRFCS love in over several bottles of wine and the odd beer.

It must be unheard of.... but why has this strange phenomenon occurred?

It seems that we have been ground down to zero expections and past the point of caring. Cheers Tony & a big glass of red to everyone.

The luckiest part of it was that they chanced against a nobhead who continues to put big lummox £5m strikers out wide, naturally gifted wingers in the middle or on the bench, plays players out of form and doesn't reward good performers (who rescued him last match) with a start.

Chances to score for sure but it was an abomination of a performance with some bizarre tactical choices.

A predictably mundane performance with precious little to get excited about. Unusually slow start but we recovered and looked the better up to half time. Having said that to win a game you need to create proper chances rather than just lots of possession and with the exception of Elliott's missed chance from Armstrong's pass I can't really recall any other really good clear opportunities to take the lead.

No worry, 0-0 at half time was fair enough and nothing to be upset about. 

Second half I thought was very poor. 

The usual self pity talk after conceding a scruffy goal but these things happen when balls come into the six yard area. We don't do it enough to the opposition as we keep the ball in areas where you don't hurt them or where mistakes aren't game changing.

After they went 1-0 up the game was never in any doubt. Armstrong's 20 yarder well saved being the only time their keeper has really been called into serious action. 

Mowbray rolls out his tombola after 65 minutes, but after witnessing another random selection of substitutions it is difficult to believe there is much method behind the madness. It strikes me as just throwing on as many attack minded subs as he can in the hope they produce something through volume of numbers. It rarely works but you only have to look at the chances created in the last half hour - you would expect a top 6 chasing side, top goalscorers in the division, chasing an equaliser against a side that hasn't won at home in nearly 3 months to be bombarding them relentlessly, putting them under intense pressure and forcing them into last ditch defending and their keeper into a string of saves to keep them at 1-0. But no. Nothing of the sort. Infact I doubt QPR will have had an easier last 30 minutes all season and managed to waste away the final 30 minutes with relative ease.

Where does this leave us? No different to this morning. We aren't getting the top six under this manager and that has become apparent over 3 years not a few games. He simply doesn't have the tools in his own locker to do it.

A familiar feeling of getting within a result of the top 6 spots and looking forward with optimism to now a new month and a familiar sort of result to bring the good spell to an end. 

These sort of results aren't fatal in isolation - the key is how you respond to them. Anyone can have an off day from time to time although the best sides have them only very rarely. The problem is that under Mowbray these sort of days usually usher in a spell of 4, 5 or 6 game winless runs where we build up a large block of points gap to the play offs then have to have another good run to claw it back. 

I now fully expect another 3 games without a win and will be very pleasantly surprised indeed if we win any of them. 

As for the Nyambe substitution - shocking.

Highlights that we just aren't quite there yet at both ends, nil nil would have been fair enough. Need to be nicking games like that or a least drawing them though.

Still feel though that the continued stuttering is partly down to tactics and lack of fluidity in the team. Coupled with the lack of ruthless bullishness from top to bottom you need to chase promotion.

Far too happy to plod along just hoping them make a raft of changes and hope a bit more. Far more effective would be more balance in the system and get in the oppositions faces.

Neither the team or manager has it in them though unless their backs are against the wall.

According to this Gallagher was playing alongside Armstrong.

On Elliot playing centrally, I'd be surprised if Liverpool are happy with their golden kid being played out of position. He looks like a shadow of the player when he was playing in his correct position.

It can't be easy playing for Mowbray constantly swapping you about like a panini sticker.

OK, well I’ll qualify it with a serious response, just incase. 

We’ve always changed thread titles. It’s just with the latest forum software you can see (or I’m guessing you can) who changed the title and when. When I say always, usually it’s not for attempted comedy like in this instance, usually if a thread goes off topic or details about a game change / aren’t included I will tweak the thread title to be suitable. 

I changed the title of the thread because I found it funny. I really enjoyed StevenSK getting wine recommendations half way through the thread because I was expecting chaos when I logged in — which usually happens when we lose. To his credit, Mercer took it very well and I’ve had a few laugh out loud moments this evening reading the replies. I’ve also found it thoroughly refreshing that the thread isn’t full of arguments and bickering. We’ve had two reports tonight in this thread, usually after a loss we’re closer to ten. 

I may have misjudged the situation, honestly from viewing the replies I can only see that you’ve found offence, if it’s only you then my honest thoughts are ‘so be it’ but if it’s genuinely upset anyone else please do speak or (either on private message or publicly here) and if the general consensus is that it’s not appreciated I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again. 

Either way, as always, thank you for having an opinion. This website is run at this stage solely by a small sponsorship deal and volunteers, it’s sometimes great and sometimes a bit of a burden. We won’t always get it right but we will always try to do the best to keep the site going, improve on it and at a minimum keep the community open to anyone that wishes to be part of it and respect it.

He's undoubtedly achieved many good things for the Club but he struggles to get a decent tune out of a potential 'Strativarius'.
