I don't get why Raya and Rothwell are directly comparable to be honest. There will be examples of players who were highly rated here and deemed to be not managed correctly who left and faded into obscurity too.

Raya in that first season following promotion cost us a number of points through his eccentricity. We dont see Brentford week in week out but even when I have seen him in the last 2 years in the Championship, he made horrendous errors, one v Hull away and one in the play off final in the first year stand out, the key is to reduce those errors which he seems to have done, his shot stopping was always excellent. After over 2 years of development, he is obviously a different player and how much of that is purely down to continuing to play regularly and learn from mistakes and how much is down to coaching is purely subjective, but what he is doing now doesnt mean that the criticism and doubts over 2 years ago were invalid. The big issue for me is spending the money (plus a bit extra) on a striker we already knew was poor, then loaning a sub par replacement for Raya, it was a double whammy.

Rothwell has played this season much deeper as has been touched on, in more of a defensive role than an attacking one, and still hasn't totally convinced. He played to the left of a three last season and has played on the wing prior, in all positions it has been flashes of genius amidst general mediocrity and anonymity.

Not wanting to rehash the whole Raya thing, but Raya won us more points with saves most keepers wouldn't make than he cost us with errors. That's not revisionism btw, I said the same repeatedly at the time. And that he would reduce those errors over time is hardly surprising.

Rothwell has been playing the centre midfield this season and has been playing well in all honest. He has been one of the reasons where we have 16 points,. Plus playing that role he has to do the defensive side of the game and he has played his part in our defence being good apart from the 2 last 2 games.

Sadly, I think it's highly likely Rothwell will leave Rovers.

Have always liked the lad from day one - a potential game changer, exciting and posing a real threat.

IMO, he hasn't been managed well by Mowbray and co and his progress has been held back.  Rothwell needed consistent opportunity, encouragement and patience with focus on what he can do ever so well.

Think he will simply fly at his next club.

sadly I think you are right he will leave us. that day will be massive disappointment for me cos I think he is key player and someone I've always been a fan of his from day 1 like yourself.

I think he is now playing his proper position and he is enjoying playing there from what I told

One other thing on Rothwell regardless of exactly how good he is, are we going to replace him with better? And how much would replacing him even with the same quality cost? If the cost of replacing like for like costs more than the contract upgrade for him, we have made a mistake. Unless we can get significantly better, letting him go will be a mistake.

Also given how threadbare the squad is getting, do we have the capacity to replace another player?

His replacement is already in the building. Who that is , is another question

Rovers interested Hearts centre back John Souttar who is out of contract this summer 2022.

Souttar is a good player and someone I've rated for a while. Think he would be good signing here.

He could join the queue of center halfs, unless he can play right-back.

well given that Lenihan is out of contract in the summer I would see Souttar as a direct replacement for Lenihan.

Plus given that Ayala only has a year left on his contract aswell.

Personnally I would say Wharton and Carter are more likely replacements, with Magloire and Phillips as understudies.  Before anyone says why do I want this. I want it noted that I do not agree with this, but it is what I think The Rovers will do.

Maglorie will be released at the end of the season in my opinion. not good enough.

I think Souttar transfer would makes sense and on a free would be excellent piece of business. Imagine Park and his staff are the one looking at Souttar and alot of players currently with us possibly having to rebuild the squad this summer coming,

0n Rothwell ...

Imagine if a big breasted bare chested lady ran on to the pitch every 15 minutes. I personally would find that very entertaining and I'd look forward to every 15 minute intervention.

This however would have zero effect on the game or the final score but it would be a very interesting contribution to the discussions in the pub afterwards.

Such is Rothwell's impact. Massively entertaining but without any effect on the game or the final score.

Much to be admired about the lad and I'll miss him when he's gone but it will have absolutely no impact on our points or our position at the end of the season.

If I've annoyed anyone with my analogy I apologise unreservedly.

We would have lost 3-1 at Huddersfield if he hadn't virtually walked the  ball in by dancing around their defence.

The guy is surrounded by shit, good luck to him.

Very talented and under valued by many of the fan base.  Mowbray hasn't been able to get the best out of him consistently and that's a failure of management.

'One swallow doth not a summer make'.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a Rothwell hater. I really enjoy watching him, he's an entertainer. If he goes I'll miss his talent but I don't think it will effect our points total. So much is right about his game but there's still a lot missing and he's too old for me to be saying that and for it to be OK.

I know he's got a family to feed and as a professional he has to look after his career but in my rose coloured world I want players who want to play for us, he clearly doesn't, maybe that's colouring my view of him.

I'll be happy if he signs a new contract, but he won't will he.

Are you excluding him getting promoted, and Brentford being 7th. I suppose those achievements count for nothing also. Please tell me what will make him a good keeper.

Yes, he is a good keeper.

When he was a Rover, he did many super saves. At the same time,  there were too many occasions when his awful howlers gifted the opposition a way back into the game and were experienced like a punch in the solar plexus.

However good he is now, we shouldn't pretend those things never happened.

To be honest, until recently, this has been a feature of too many Rovers keepers.

You said something about Arsenal maybe being interested and then signing Ramsdale as an indicator of how good Raya is, I said it doesn't. Now you have gone onto say something different

Brentford have a good team and manager, he isnt solely responsible for any of their achievements. In fact in the play offs the first time around , he was to blame for the goal they conceded, a free from over 40 yards out.

Sorry bigdog, I’ve not said something different. I’ve just expanded on the reasons he was a very good goalkeeper, and he’s getting better with each passing season. I can’t be bothered to go back over the previous postings. Are you disagreeing that he’s that good that Arsenal would have wanted to buy him?

Omg! Seriously, can people not see it!!

Raya, superb shot stopper, just needed polishing round the rough edges to get his complete game in order. Cue community centre Ben....hmm. nothing, nowt, nada! Oh sorry " saaave".

12mths later,  we have an international standard goalkeeper,  great shot stopper  superb distribution,  just needs a little polishing on his decision making.  In comes our Ben, "Saaave Thomas " & fuck else. Oh, by the way Tommy,  can put your boots on the wrong feet please, your kicking is far too accurate! This muppet can turn Donnarumma into a league 1 keeper in no time!

Bell end!!!!

Rant over! Sorry,  ex gk union!

Ah so Arsenal allegedly wanting to sign him, even though they didn't sign him shows he is a good keeper in your view, but when I said the fact Bazunu was with Man city and Kelleher the number 2 at Liverpool  indicated they have something about them, you scoffed at the idea. Tying yourself in knots.

He's not at Arsenal, he is at Brentford, who are doing well. However he is miles away from making the Spain team, which you claimed he would in the next 18 months.

How many first team games have your boys played. You were saying they are better than a first team goalkeeper playing in the premier team that’s 7th in the league. Oh by the way transfer talk today has Raya linked with both Arsenal and Everton. I’m certainly not tied in knots.
