As ever with England, if you go beyond our strongest XI, there is a drop off in quality.

I’d back our strongest team to give anyone a game, just there are some players we really cannot do without.

It's the same or worse for any international team. France are considered one of the best teams in the world but a lot of their first team would not get near the England first 11.

If England don't win Euros then Southgate should not even be considered for a PL job.

Hard to disagree on the drop off. Yet what team aside from maybe France (excluding Mbappe) could you say that for?

Last night was essentially it for Southgate. His next games are tournament warm-ups. He will already know 80%+ of his squad, now he has to wait and hope that all the players he wants stay fit.

9 of his 11 is set; Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire (yes, he'll play if fit), Rice, Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Kane. He needs to decide on a midfield partner for Rice, and a left back.

Of Southgate's usuals Grealish, Shaw, Trippier, Alexander-Arnold, Pope, and James are injured. Potential new boy Colwill is too. I assume if they are all fit come end of May they'll be in the squad.

Toney, Rashford, Watkins will be in the squad as will Chilwell and Gallagher.

Phillips, Sterling, and probably Henderson are gone.

I think he should be given the red scum job. Hopefully he'll get them relegated.

Probably defensively but attack wise we are stacked

Maybe, but not at centre forward. There’s a huge drop off in quality from Kane to Toney and Watkins (and I rate them both, tbf).

Yeah, providing all are fit, there is about 6 or 7 of the 23 spots up for grabs, 16 nailed on if fit.

3rd choice keeper who will get 0 minutes

2 x CBs who will get 0 minutes (Branthwaite, Colwill, Guehi, Konsa, Gomez, Tomori, maybe Chilwell)

1 x CM between Gallagher and Henderson

3 x Attacker who may get a handful of minutes in final group match (Watkins, Toney, Bowen, Gordon, Palmer, Grealish)

Pickford, Ramsdale, GK3

Walker, Trent, Shaw, Trippier, Maguire, Stones, CB1, CB2

Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham, Maddison, CM1

Kane, Saka, Foden, Rashford FW1, FW2, FW3

Maybe he opts for another Defender or Midfielder instead of the final Attacker, given Trent will be CM or nothing.

Agree with the 11 (or 9) you listed too, providing all are fit, slow in Shaw LB and Trent alongside Rice and we have no excuses to not win the whole thing

Tbf France for example have a huge drop off in quality compared to giroud. Muani and thuram don't look top quality.  Obviously they have mbappe but he's more of a wide forward.  They really would struggle without him

Tuchel picks his first squad in the coming weeks and I'm interest who he will pick and not.

Who will he pick has his number 1?

Will Lewis Hall be pick in the squad and start in the first game at left back?

What formation will we play and style of play?

It's being talked about in the Adam Wharton thread but here is the full England Squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers;

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton), James Trafford (Burnley)

Defenders: Dan Burn (Newcastle United), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Marc Guéhi (Crystal Palace), Reece James (Chelsea), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal), Tino Livramento (Newcastle United), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Kyle Walker (AC Milan, loan from Manchester City)

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Jordan Henderson (Ajax), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Marcus Rashford (Aston Villa, loan from Manchester United), Dominic Solanke (Tottenham Hotspur)

As always there will be debates.

I don't like this German already, what a load of cobblers:

In an interview with ITV Sport, Tuchel said England were missing "the identity, the clarity, the rhythm, the repetition of patterns, the freedom of players, the expression of players, the hunger" to win Euro 2024.

I don't really care what he says, it's what he does.

He's been hired to win a tournament and that's what he needs to do.

To use your own words: 'nothing else matters'.

What are you mad at? He's right. I watched the games. England were woeful the whole tournament apart from 20 minutes against the Dutch.

Agreed. Nothing else does. Tuchel has the tactical nous everyone pilloried Southgate for, let's give him a chance.
