broadsword Posted November 25, 2021 Posted November 25, 2021 " The 1905 book; Book of Football by Jonathan Russell describes Blackburn Rovers' first kit as a white jersey with Maltese Cross on the wearers left breast, Trousers and a blue and white skull cap. The Maltese Cross notorious with the public schools in which the founders of the club were educated. " From the club's wikipedia entry. Quote

Upside Down Posted November 26, 2021 Author Posted November 26, 2021 (edited) Reports are conflicting and Wikipedia is not the most reliable source at times. I don't think there are many contemporary reports discussing this. All the things I've ever seen about this are after the fact. Fact is we've played in the famous blue and white for a lot longer than most clubs have existed. Edited November 26, 2021 by Upside Down Quote
broadsword Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 (edited) Yeah, I think it's one of those things that will never get settled for sure. Was just having a look around and found this photo. Look at the size of some of these shinpads! http://www.worldvintagecolours.com/product/blackburn-rovers-1895/ Edited November 28, 2021 by broadsword 1 Quote
Wood26 Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 Any of the shirts with the dark blue. I hate our kits when we go light blue. 1 Quote

Not sure I’ve seen any photos of us in those kits but I’ll have a look at some point. Quote
SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 The Maltese cross is controversial...no known photos of it being worn.Players back then who were selected to play for England were allowed to wear the three Lions England badge on their shirts as recognition of the Honour. Earliest known picture to exist I believe dated around 1878... 1 Quote
Upside Down Posted December 3, 2021 Author Posted December 3, 2021 The late 60s shirts really are quite special. I also have got a lot of love for these two as well 2 Quote

It has been famously copied many times and is absolutely iconic. Over the years however, there have been different variations, the blue and white have changed sides as well as the sleeves changing slightly. Which is your favourite design then? My choice is - Home: 1996 -1998 Away: 1993 - 1995 The 96-98 one was nice but the CIS didnt look good on it imo. McEwans looked great on kits. I think with the red McEwans on the front it would have been quite nice. Didn't like the white socks with it though. One of those logos that suits football shirts. The Chelsea 3 sponsor is awful now for example. My favourite is the 1994-96 home. They did alter the home kit slightly after the 1995 title with the new asics logo and the new crest. The crest on the shorts changed also and they changed the blue socks adding a thicker white band than had been there in 1994/95. The 95/96 away was horrible. 1992-94 very nice also. The current home is the nicest since 1996 imo. Quote
