Burnley crowds

Going back to the 90s I borrowed a couple of books from a Rovers supporting mate of mine. One book was about all rovers league tables since when and the other was about Burnley. Both included attendances.

I looked at the season when Burnley last won the league and compared the gates we got against theirs.

Now, if my memories serve me right, when Burnley won the league in was is 1960/61....????.....where did we finish? 7th or 8th.

When I totted up the league and cups attendances for that season and averaged them out Rovers averaged appx 7000 more per home game than Burnley.

Tit for tat I know. Just hope I remembered rightly.

I’m surprised by that. I’d have said they would have been roughly equal at the best. That was the season after the Wembley ticket debacle when lots of Rovers fans walked away from the club.

Don’t think that’s correct mate. The only thing they’ve got on us is that their highest average attendance for a season is higher than ours. 32k when they won the league in 1960, against our 30k in 1958-59.

Other than that, old Ewood was bigger than old Turf Moor, new Ewood is bigger than new Turf Moor, our record attendance is bigger than theirs and our major honours blow them out the water, 10 to their paltry 3. Their trophy cabinet is full of dust.

Different times Gav. Attendances everywhere up since then. Poor stadiums, fan violence. Not seen as a family day out!

Great fans, always there in the darkest times you'd never get that lot climbing on any bandwagons.

Agree although many at Rovers can't wait to produce attendance stats from the 80s to help explain/justify dire attendances in 2021.

As you say times have changed and if the benchmark is what was happening in the 80s then we are on a slippery slope. Football is a different game and most clubs have seen substantial increases since then even when at a similar level in the pyramid.

They were getting less than 2000 for league games, different times or not, thats bloody appalling for the biggest and best supported club in the world 47er.

I’ll add to that the big crowds at the end of the 60s beginning of the 70s was due to us. In that time blackburn supporters used to follow them because they believed  we where one and the same. I used to go onto the beehole with 20 or 30 of my dads friends who were rovers season tickets holders and they would cheer Burnley. The beehive during the time of Peter noble ,frank casper and Ralph Coates was almost entirely rovers fans

They where the ones who changed the dynamics when things changed and they where no longer top dog. Rather than returning the favour they turned nasty and where we are now is because of them.

Agree, having worked in Burnley for 40 years, the early 70's was banter and friendly rivalry, however once we gained the ascendancy it turned.

I remember as a kid in the seventies, Bolton was always more hassle than Burnley.

Yep, my dad always used to go to Burnley if they were at home and Rovers weren't, even still in a Rovers jersey. Couldn't do that now, couldn't even go to the town centre!

To be fair a lot of fans are staying away from Rovers deliberately in protest. A lot of them would still be going regularly, maybe even season ticket holders, under different circumstances.

Unlike suuupoh Bonleh I can't remember any Rovers fans claiming to be the best fans in the world.

Yes, had to believe now. I knew people who followed Rovers one Saturday and Burnley the next. Some had season tickets for both.
