v Luton Town (a) - 29/1/22

Recommended Posts

Another well earned hard won point and clean sheet but a bad day again for the knocks and niggles.

Good job they were toothless up front and our commitment and workrate matched theirs although we were even less than toothless attack wise. Fair play on Ayala having a go up top it's a pity nothing dropped for him or found his nut, going to have to do something about continually being so disjointed though. Inviting pressure all the time and as good as we've been defensively we'll end up with a hiding before long.

Another clean sheet. Not losing at Luton isn't a bad result under the circumstances. Not many on here were confident of a win.

QPR and Bournemouth winning makes today looks bad but they'll have hiccups too. Fulham drew, and West Brom lost again. Plenty of games to go.

The most surprising aspect of today's game is that Cameron Jerome is still playing. What wasn't a surprise is that he still can't shoot.

Always wanted to go to Kenilworth Rd with it being such a quaint little relic of the past and was watching from the home area today due to the unavailability of tickets in the away end.

Loved the ground, not so keen on the performance, which laid bare our lack of depth. Think we need a striker, right winger and central midfielder or it'll be a push to make the play offs playing so poorly.

Agree we improved a bit after HT when Butterworth came on for Gallagher. Thought the only player to do himself justice today was Buckley and the manager bizarrely took him off after which we went worse again.

Escaped with a point but will have to play much much better than that.

Very good result today at a ground we've not won at in the league for over 30yrs.

Today highlights the fact we've no real strength in depth, one or two players out and we struggle. Nobody should be allowed to leave over the next few days and we absolutely must bring 2 further quality players in and even that may not be enough.

Tony Mowbray and this young group of players are punching well above their weight, I'm proud of everyone of them, they've brought some pride back into the club, town and shirt.

Safe journey home to the tremendous support that made the long journey today and we go again.

Onwards and upwards,

Glad you enjoyed your day.

Personally, I think it's a dump of a ground in a dump of a town.  No happy experiences for me there.

Today showed the squad needs strengthening and without 2 or 3 players who can make a difference even the playoffs might be a struggle

We didn't lose though, so not a bad day

We're missing our three strike players in Brereton, Khedra and Rothwell. We don't have anything like the same player behind them - in Rothwell's case we don't have a midfielder that can carry the ball like he does. That ability to run with the ball through the middle terrifies teams.

It wouldn't be too bad if we weren't missing Dack, Poveda, Dolan and that Spurs lad too.

You've got to be happy with that result in the circumstances, christ it wouldn't even have been a complete disaster with a fully fit team! They beat Bournemouth there the other week and drew with Fulham not long before.

Having Diaz back will obviously add a dimension and he's no doubt got a spring in his step after getting back on the scoresheet.

Hopefully the injuries aren't too bad, what actually happened to Gally as I'd nipped in the kitchen and missed it? Believe he was coughing up blood? Have I made it up or has that happened with him previously 🤔

Thank christ we've no game midweek though, we need a few extra days to get a few players back fit and of course hopefully bed a couple of new signings in. Monday is huge, please don't screw this up......

That brought back some memories, it was like playing in the Rochdale Amateur League Div 2 back in the 1960’s ! It was a low intensity war not a game of football.  No wonder the ball burst, it was probably crying. They are a real ale house team, they’d rather fight you than play football. Wimbledon Crazy Gang mk2. Something left in in every tackle, every headed challenge began with a push. Most teams have a shithouse or two, they had about seven ! Total windup merchants. You need men to play in those sorts of games and today we had some men. Last season they’d have walked all over us. Not a day for the Khadra’s or Rothwell’s, they’d have just been kicked out of it.

The back three and the keeper earned their corn today, they were magnificent. Nyambe was good in defence. Edun they targeted with constant high balls until that tosser kicked him out of the game. I wasn’t impressed with the new lad on the wing and he wasn’t much better at full back. He ran the ball into trouble too often for me, you can’t do that at full back. JRC was ok without doing anything special. Travis, and Johnson to a lesser extent, blocked up the centre and fought fire with fire as best they could. Buckley keep trying to play football and was probably our best attacker. I wasn’t impressed with Butterworth, he’s a bit like Rhodes was - he only plays when he gets the ball.

Gallagher was doing his best to be a one man attack until he got filled in off the ball. That should have been a red card all day long. As someone else said he can’t even hold up the ball when he’s in space. Putting Ayala up front was a bollock, he can’t run. He made Chris Samba look like Craig Belllamy !

All in all a really hard fought for and well won point. Anybody who thinks otherwise has never played in a game like that.

reminded me of sunday mornings on astley village  playing fields, the kind of game when you dread a short misplaced pass  or a set piece  in your penalty area🙂

Their #15 would he off if we had VAR. Just assaulted Gallagher off the ball.

I've no idea how Lockyear didn't get sent off. I could understand it if it had been completely missed. But the fact the ref booked him. He took him out, fully on purpose. Typified how disgusting they were as a whole

Any team who lost 4 key men like we did wouldn't be at their best.

If you can keep a clean sheet you always have a chance.

Missed the game due to family commitments. Sounds like a classic 0-0 boring enough fair. Interested to know how Zeefuick, Buckley, Johnson and Gallagher played if anyone cares to share their views...

Zeefuick started of on the right hand side up front, he couldn’t get into the game. Having said that not many players could.  Second half he played left back. Defensively he wasn’t too bad but on the ball he ran into trouble a couple of time in dangerous areas of the pitch. He gets a bit carried away when he’s in possession. Running it instead of passing.

Buckley did his best to play his football in a war zone. Our most influential attacking player. I was surprised when he was taken off with about 20 mins to go.

Johnson didn’t feature much on the ball but he was an effective presence in midfield and his height was a big help when we were under siege.

Gallagher was basically on his own up front and struggled to get into the game. It was a bit too physical for him. Second half he was running towards their goal with one of their centre backs in tow. When the ball was passed to the far side of the field about 40 yards away the centre half took advantage of the dopey officials and elbowed him in the chest/neck area. Game over for the lad.

We have a very big squad. Consider that with all the absences, we still had two fairly big signings (for us, these days) on the bench, in Chapman and Davenport.

You might question the quality but numbers and signings are there. And a lot of investment goes into the U23s. If Johnson and Davenport aren't good enough as back-ups, that's on Mowbray.

Mowbray likes to, apparently, demean young players. He said, Garrett's just a boy. Today, he said the forward line was inexperienced, or words to that effect.

Then he'll sign and play youngsters in Poveda, Branthwaite, Clarkson and Elliot. He's very inconsistent in this regard and to me it comes across as a selective excuse to play his favoured players even if underperforming.
