Transfer Window - COMPLETE. Where’s Gregg?

Seems like Mowbray to be confirmed at Sunderland.  Spent a fair bit of time working in the NE, including Sunderland, over my working life and they will tear him to shreds if he starts with his, IMO, fantasy journeys, excuses and general bullshit.  It is not a club with 'happy clappers'.

Ryan Thomas Kiwi/English box to box midfielder released by PSV because his knee has needed specialist surgery.  Jack Rodwell deal potentially to lessen burden on the kids anyone?

Tom Carrol, Massimu Luongo, and Thomas Rogic also available

If fit, Thomas would be a real asset. Was top 5 midfielder in Eredivisie a couple of seasons ago and I have watched a lot of matches as I have a relation with AZ.

Gary Birtles got one in 40-something starts for Man U but was prolific for Forest either side of that. Sometimes players don’t get played to their strengths when they move club.

That's it then........

We'd obviously better sign Nuttall back.

Or sometimes your career stats suggests you're just not that good and they're not far wrong.

Comparisons to Birtles are downright silly. Birtles looked the bees knees before he went to Utd, it just didn't work out for him there. However he had already shone at the SAME level. This lad at age 23 has done NOTHING previously at this level. Indeed none in 32 is a little more than coincidence or a hard luck story it suggests Championship football is well beyond him.

If fit is the key word but he fits the Rothwell replacement.  Granted hes just had an operation to move his knee lower in his leg because its so off so is a big gamble - but we get a Europa league level player for that gamble

Every fanbase has what you perceive to be happy clappers.

Also, Tomasson has repeatedly mentioned journeys or similar, its typical managerial spiel.

Mowbray will have them eating out of his hand at first most new managers say all the right things. Combine it with some good results and he might surprise a few although he'll have to curb his Boro obsession.

It goes wrong early doors and you're looking at something similar to how Rovers fans felt about Coyle i'd imagine.  Plenty Makems registering their dismay already at an ex Smog taking over who's never said a good word about them apparentley.

It's going to be interesting to watch it unfold and if he gets backing and takes them up it's going to leave some serious egg on Indian faces.

We got:

Hyam

Ayala

Wharton

Carter

Phillips

Fighting out for two spots.

For 2/3 spots actually.

I consider 5 the perfect number for a team that alternates between 2 and 3 CBs. My only qualms really are that Ayala will get injured at some point for sure, possibly quite a lot, so it's hard to say how much we can count him, and that Carter and Phillips are still inexperienced at this level. But personally I think what we have will do the job.

Another CB who can also play RB quite well would be handy though, so wouldn't have minded VDB. My guess is we will use Carter at RB at times, as JDT will surely suss out how poor JRC is.

Lot of huff around Brereton-Diaz but if nowt happens tomorrow, I reckon he stays.  Nobody is going to stump up £15mil.

When you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.

I am afraid we will get the same as what we got for Rothwell, Lenihan, & Nyambe.

Breo will be gone before the deadline and for more than 15 million.

the PL teams are desperate for strikers atm.

So maybe it “just didn’t work out for him” at Rotherham, plus the lad was even younger then. It wasn’t working out very well for Brereton either when he was 21. Rothwell did sod all at this level for 2.5 years before he came good.

I’ve no idea if he’d been any good or not in our team, but I do know one slanted stat (most of the appearances were as sub, in a failing team) doesn’t prove anything.

Ayala's other reason for getting dropped beside injury is he does limit the playing style. You can't push up because he's too slow.

Our great run last year coincided with playing a back three of Lenihan, Van Hecke and Wharton, and pushing up pretty high. Ayala was deliberately left out.

If we want to stick to counter attacking football great, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets left out for games when we want to push up.

I've always taken the stance that we needed another CB - the fact that we've brought in Hyam means that we've solved that problem. I think Carter has earned his chance at playing time after his loan stint last season and obviously Phillips hasn't let us down either. Ayala has been our standout player this year - he's a PL talent when he's fit.

SVDB was an option for me as he can play RB. That's my only concern at the back now - starting LB and backup RB (I thought Travis was very good there on Saturday for what it's worth).

I'm not too concerned about Van Hecke as if he wanted to be here he would be - and evidently Brighton want a fortune for him.

Especially given he was on already on a yellow as well.

I don't think it is.

If you want a goal scorer and he goes 32 games without scoring a goal it would suggest he's not your man.  Look at the greats such as Law, Shearer, Lineker and at the 'lower' end the likes of Simon Garner, they all notched on a regular basis when they broke through to their respective 1st teams.

Likewise, if a plumber can't fix a leak after 32 attempts, he's not your man.

Mercer, I have nothing more to add to my point about comparison.

Rev, you have based your opinion on one stat from 18 months ago.

There is plenty of footage of him over the years including his spell at Portsmouth.

The question for me has to be (when fit) who plays with Wharton? He's so good that he makes it easy for whoever is playing alongside him.

No coincidence that with him in we've won 3 and without him lost 3. There was that remarkable stat last year as well for a long time of never having lost a game when he's started.

If Hyam's any use the pecking order would be Wharton/Hyam/Ayala/ Phillips/ Carter for me.

He needs to go in this window.

We don’t need the risk of an injury or a drop in form diluting the price.

Plus the ability to pre sign a contract  in January and all the head games that go with that.

Interestingly Hyam's right footed but seems to usually play on the left of a back three which is Wharton's side. Plus as others have pointed out Ayala has been our best player this season so far...

So when everyones fit it will be interesting to see what we do. Could be back three with Ayala central, Wharton left and Hyam right? If Hyam can pass well like Wharton there's a lot of sense in that. Let Brittain and Pickering (maybe Styles?) push up.
