But he'll earn 3 times as much! That's a step-up in the real world.

I’m not going to miss a centre half who’s only really looked competent when playing on the right of 3. We shouldn’t have any difficulty replacing him, in fact we could already have a replacement in Carter.

We could have done with the fee though? Shouldn't have been allowed just to fizzle out like that. Irresponsible of the owners given that they won't make it up in our transfer "chest".

If the owners are now serious about pushing on as a club then they should make a statement by putting in a sizeable cash(plus the usual future incentives) offer for Van Hecke.

He genuinely seemed to enjoy playing for us and had a great affinity with the fans from the off, he would be a great signing to build or defense round for years to come

For me he is our best centre back and a like for like replacement will cost us a considerable about in a potential fee and wages. Of the three centre halves we relied on pretty much all last season two are now gone.

It would be a statement of intent...to violate FFP and be sanctioned. Couldn't see him going for less than 5 million, which would still leave us with worse CB options than last season now DL is gone. And we still have half the rest of a squad to rebuild. The new manager isn't even appointed and should have a say in how the budget is distributed.

Better to accept the budget is going to be minimal until BBD is sold, rather than kid ourselves it can be high and get upset when it isn't.

It's odd how Lenihan suddenly becomes a poor player now he's leaving. I thought he was rather good for Rovers, a solid, competitive Championship centre back with a good attitude. Penny to a pound his replacement (if there is one) won't be anything like as good. Coupled with Van Hecke's departure we now have a great big gaping hole in defence.

Nobody's ever doubted his attitude, but his ability has always been critised, he's never looked comfy as a centreback to me

Shame to lose Darragh, but something I think we've all seen coming for some time.

Middlesbrough have got a solid to above average defender for this level, he'll do well there I think and they'll be up in the top 10 and challenging for the playoffs I'm sure.

As for Rovers, I think it underlines the start of another cycle. The new DoF appointment yesterday, plus hopefully a new manager soon and the emergence of some new youth players coming through really do point toward a new era. Hopefully in five years time Hayden Carter will have played 200+ games for the club and become captain.

Good luck Darragh.

Mind-blowing anyone calling Lenihan poor. Championship centre halves are exactly that.

They lose concentration and make mistakes, that's why they're not in the Prem.

We'll do extremely well to find a better Championship level centre half than a guy we've just let leave for free to the team who finished one place above us last year. And if we do, we'll have to pay at least 2mil for the privilege.

Bit sickened to see him go to be honest.

He did have the odd rash decision but for the most part he was a fairly competent defender, probably the most reliable we have had here in the last few years outside of Van Hecke. Few people dismissing him but he was far from the worst player here.

He is also another player we would need to replace. History has shown us we can't rely on Ayala at all, Carter looks good at L1 level but we need another strong signing in that position before the start of the season.

Always thought he would end up re-signing, even after his contract ran out due to being the club captain and all. Obviously not to be.

Christ almighty. Some serious denial here, or at least inability to judge a CB. Talking about relying on Ayala is sheer delusion though, guy can barely stay fit. We have signed him after he left Boro, they've signed Lenihan after he left us. I know who is getting the better deal there.

Some of our lot need help they really do, this guy whilst not being the best was an integral part of last season.  He's an old school much and bullets defender who grew into his role and now some other club will probably benefit from his best years.

Ayala is 30 odd and about as reliable as the weather and it's doubtful he's as committed as Lenihen was. For me this is a bigger blow than Mowbray or Rothwell going. He was a rare leader on and off the pitch not just a foghorn like Travis. To see him go to Boro for a few more quid is galling.

Easy to replace seems to be the view though in some eyes, we'll see.

A steady defender but one who never overcame his main failing of being drawn to the ball too often. He was still playing like the midfield player he started out as at times.  Centre halves have to stay with the player they’re marking as much as possible and not go firefighting in front of the defence. This was especially shown up when we played 4 at the back, with a 5 he could get away with it some of the time. Maybe Wilder will do what Mowbray couldn’t do and sort out that aspect of his game. He was also partial to a booking when it wasn’t absolutely necessary, but I could say that about a few at Rovers. Maybe Wilder will sort that out as well.

To be honest I expected more in the captaincy role. Leading by example doesn’t work all of the time. Some players need geeing up verbally.  Maybe I’m really hard to please. Anyway good luck to the lad, he always gave Rovers 100% and you shouldn’t ask for more than that.

It's not hard to work out the probability.

Last summer we received about 10 million for Arma after the Newcastle cut. We spent almost nowt. The season before that we spent almost nowt too. We still had to sell our training ground for what, about 15 million just to avoid the sanctions, a trick we can't repeat. If you think we will now be in a position to spend some 5 mill or so on a CB, PLUS rebuild the rest of the squad, replacing Rothwell, all the loanees, probably Nyambe, before we sell BBD, and not violate FFP at the next assessment without sales, I'm very confident you're wrong.

Paying Lenihan a few k more, retaining an asset worth at least 2 million, and/or hiring a good manager in an appropriate time frame however, would have been much more financially viable.

Monumental blow to lose Lenihan for a number of reasons:

1. Hes a huge player for us who we do far better with when he plays.

2. Hes our captain and we lack experience and leadership in general. Its ok saying "Travis can be captain" but he seems much more rash and lacking in that same level of composure.

3. He has gone for free. Having to scrape the barrel for a replacement. @chaddyrovers mentioned Mawson and Goode, so a freebie (who will likely go elsewhere by the time a manager is appointed) and someone who has struggled since leaving Northampton. That may be the market we are indeed looking in financially but will we find an equal replacement? No.

4. He has gone to Boro, a real shot in the arm for a rival if we supposedly genuinely want to push again.

Lots of revionism about him too. The phrase "woeful concentration" for a CB is well over the top, hes not perfect but hes shown himself to be a very good CB at this level and we struggle without him. Without him and Van Hecke leaves a gigantic hole and our defence was what we built our success on.

Also talk about a sideways step or indeed a step down, behave! Boro have shown ambition getting in Wilder and this transfer says a lot.

People have batted it off on social media by mentioning Carter and Phillips. The former has had 2 good half season loan spells so hopefully will look massively different from the nervous kid that has featured previously but still he wont be on par with our outgoing captain. And Phillips is 16/17, nothing like unsubstantiated pressure by expecting him to help fill the void of such an important player.

. But we are seeing our careless and shortsighted approach to contract renewals coming back to bite us.

Yep, more false economy from the master of it, Waggott.

The same man who thinks hiking prices for a working class town struggling to get enough people through the gates, during a cost of living crisis, will actually bring in more money this season let alone in the longer term as our fanbase erodes further. Even after fucking up with the same policy during the covid crisis. Also thinks it's worth letting probably about 10 million quid of talent walk out the door for nowt because he couldn't add a bit more dosh to each contract offer to rigorously preserve his precious pay structure (which is clearly flawed as 3 key players all preferred to hold out for better from elsewhere once in their last year, and at least 2 are off).

Rothwell (£0), Lenihan (£0), Nyambe (£0), Van Hecke (£0), Khadra (£0).

So we're now needing to replace FIVE starters from last season with a grand total of... fuck all money incoming.

We don't have a starting quality RB, CB2 or CM to go with Travis, Brereton is nailed on to leave, pre season starts in days, oh, and we have no manager.

Anybody got a quid?
