Just seen on SSN that BHA have signed another defender. Some bloke I've never heard of from Villareal on a 5 year deal

It couldn't mean.....could it? 🤞

He's a left back. Presumably signed as Cucurella's replacement.

There is literally no point in us “cashing” in on Ben. Think about it from a personal Investment you or me might make. £10 invested… 3 years down the line you stand at £20 if you were to cash in now. Now there’s many variables at play and in 1 years time you may stand to lose that £10 in its entirety OR have a genuine chance of turning that £10 in to a 100x + investment. Think of it from a Venkys point of view. Simplistic but let’s take a step back. He is never leaving this window. Done.

Wow, that's an impressively gross oversimplification.

Haven't they already made the same mistake with Rothwell last January? They refused to cash in and they lost.

By all accounts they are happy to do it again.

I don't think that the owners should over rule the manager, or if relevant, the manager and director of football. I stand by that decision. Venkys have employed Broughton and Tomasson because presumably they seem them both as being capable of performing their role, and I would hazard a guess that their footballing knowledge compared to that could be scribbled on the back of a stamp.

Look at JDT's comments from LT article today where he says

"Asked about the decision-making process over Brereton’s future, Tomasson told the Lancashire Telegraph: “The owners are important in that decision-making and those who run the club on a daily basis, Steve (Waggott), Suhail (Pasha) and Gregg (Broughton) who are important in that."

You disagree with JDT?

We are undeniably short at centre back, even if you have untold faith in Phillips when no one can be sure how he will cope with a sudden batch of Championship games in quick succession. One more injury and we really are going to struggle, so it is IMO critical that we get one in as soon as we can, and if we are after 2, maybe we can get 1 in and Van Den Berg becomes less urgent.

Well we will only find out by him playing the games.

My point was not that Tomasson will come out and say "I feel let down" or even that he will feel let down if we struggle with the lack of depth across the rest of the month. I am saying that he would be entitled to do so.

Why are you even mentioning it when it's not a problem at all? JDT seems very relaxed about it all

Most his tweets have valuations in Euro’s which means it may be a bid of £8.4m rather than £10m…we shouldn’t even respond!

Double it and we accept it. Also surprised if he wants to go there but European football also there.

Why are folk desperate for Broughton to give a running commentary on the transfer window? It’s quite clear that he will come out and talk after the window closes.

Not only that but he’s provided a small written explanation of each signing to date on the club website.

If I was him I’d prefer to be judged on concrete signings rather than lip service to the local media.

Agrees. Gregg Broughton shouldn't be given a running commentary on transfers right now. He will do interviews after the window finishes.

Is it though…

Yes, there are more factors than that:

- Will the player continue to provide the same output if we don't sell them now (will they be as motivated to play well, will their current form continue, what happens if they get an injury? Etc)?

- Do we need that player specifically to get the big prize - is it possible that we can replace the player's quality with the the money generated (and, also, can we turn that into a long term investment rather than one we're just about to lose out on in a year's time)?

- Do we want to lose the player for no money in a year more than getting a 2x return on our investment now?

Gut feeling says though, I don't think the money will be reinvested well (if at all) if BBD goes, so I'd rather we keep him in the hopes of firing us to the Prem.

Has he said that he would be happy for the owners to overrule his decisions, which was the scenario I suggested has happened in the past and shouldnt? No.

We sat back and allowed £10 million to go down the pan this summer by neglecting the Lenihan, Nyambe and Rothwell situations, even when presented with a chance to claw some cash in for Rothwell in January.

So it seems to me we can afford to let his contract run down.

If we aren't going to reinvest the proceeds and spend on quality does it benefit Rovers in any way?

£10m for 3 out of contract players who are untested outside of the championship? Seriously ???

For me it's worth a gamble.

..... I think in the shorter term keeping him would be our best bet of doing something this season

The one thing helping this option is I don't see him chucking any toys out the pram.

Doesn't seem the type.

And why would he in this situation. Seems happy playing for us, gets on with teammates, he only has 10 months to go, if we get promoted will get a good contract offer, if he chooses elsewhere can earn a big signing fee.

Not much to dislike there.

Normally when considering "the gamble", player reaction is a big factor, here I'm confident to discount any worries.

So just leaves the standard injury concern.

Sell Brereton and kiss goodbye to any promotion bid. Our goalscoring talisman would be gone and the transfer fee banked and unlikely to be reinvested in an adequate replacement. We’d be better keeping him in an all out effort to get in the PL and then let him go for free - assuming he wants to leave.

Riis on the bench for Preston tonight and a few whispers he might be off, Boro interested.

Would people take him?

Definitely not as a Diaz replacement (if required) but as additional backup?

Bit of a Danish connection....

Not at £11million!

Agreeing with Jim constantly. WTF.

How much money would we get for promotion? If its similar to what we could get for him it would be a wash.

He's not replaceable, we can't replace him with like for like quality, we all know that but we can look for other potential match winners that we can realistically buy. Josh Bowler is certainly one of them and would be a safe, solid investment.

Even if we make a signing or two at the back and keep BBD, I still think we don't have the quality or depth to hold a sustained challenge for promotion this year so I regard this as a year of transition for us. Especially if he or some of our other players get injured. If we sell BBD and get some money that we can spend on a further 3 players of quality (caveated by the jury still being out on whether any money would be reinvested) then I would absolutely go for that. That could help us keep a sustained challenge for promotion for the next 3 seasons.

What if he's sold and replaced with Styles and two of Evjen / Bowler / Birmančević?

That'd be good business. We have to hope Broughton and JDT have a contingency plan in place.

Its a serious blow to us though if/when he goes. All that time spent developing him, we got virtually nothing from him for 2 years. Now, when we're expecting a goal from nowhere every game, he's off!

If anyone says "time for Gallacher to step up" I think that would push me over the edge!

Ah crap, that's getting closer to accept territory for me.

13 + 5 euros = £15 million.

Not a massive leap from where they're at.

I'm fairly confident of him hitting the add ons for club and country.

Officially worried after that tweet.
