Uddersfelt Blue
Best case scenario if Philips won’t sign a new contract. He sees out his contract this season. Signs for a Premier League club next summer. We get compensation then he is loaned back to us.

yankfan
It really comes down to what his representatives are telling him. On one hand if he’s 3/4 choice here he’s just one of a few developmental projects at Spurs. Miles from the first team and most likely slated for 23s or a loan to league 1. Here he’s playing meaningful minutes at a higher level than and building a reputation. How much higher wages would he be on at Spurs at 17 in the 23s? Markanday’s offer wasn’t so much more that it was worth the chance of regular first team football. I’d say Sit him down with Markanday and let him talk about getting lost at Spurs, but Markanday isn’t getting much more attention here at the moment. alex l
The lancs live report puts their neck on the line. I notice they tend to report the same as the LET minutes after. If Phillips signs, it'll boost their reputation. If he doesnt it'll make them look silly, regardless of the fact the lad can change his mind. If we were to sell him now then we would likely get a couple of million or him, which is obviously a snip compared to his value, but is a fair return on the investment that we've put in to develop him. It's not just about what we've invested into him though. We invest into the academy as a whole in the hope of producing gems like him, and Raya, and there is a whole lot of wasted investment that falls by the wayside. Granted, we currently have a lot coming through and the academy is paying for itself indirectly regardless of Phillips, but we only have about 4.5-5 million of direct money from the last few years (Raya 3m, Wright 1m, Mahoney 500k-1m...maybe a touch extra from Raya's clauses). Prior to recent years we had a serious dry patch for a long time. Point being, we need to be able to capitalise on the good uns, and it's really not fair that due to a rigged system we are losing seriously valuable talent when it has barely played for us (or in Wright's case, before). Of course we have also lost a bit (Lenihan, Nyambe) for nowt due to our own sheer incompetence and that part's on us. But it is going to seriously hurt if we get about a million or two for Phillips then see him go on to become an England legend.

Here, he has been injured nearly the entirety of his time here and has played 3 times. He isn't a regular starter as things stand, but he doesn't seem fully fit yet and will definitely get his chances and it will be up to him to take them. The same couldn't be said for if he was at Spurs. Squad player is a big upgrade on youth team player. Whether it's just speculation or actual bids. If as many teams are keenly looking as is now being said, we should be able to get the 20 million we reputedly want for him. Crucial we line up a good replacement, and ideally with some money left over to strengthen elsewhere as we probably won't replace him like-for-like in impact. When I say fair investment, I mean from the perspective of what Phillips owes us rather than us rather than what we as a club should be looking for in normal circumstances. He is being offered a back-up role and chance to play plenty of games, which is more than enough. If he decides to cash in and try to fast-track his elevation to the Premier League, then that's up to him and understandable for financial reasons. Likely he'd be loaned to the Championship/abroad for a year or so, if he did make the move. What? Ethically? No idea what that even means. Although it is disappointing to lose the likes of Nyambe and Lenihan, I enjoy a player making it through the ranks and into the first team. Seeing Buckley, Wharton, Philips and Travis, who have all played league games this season, I become more proud of the team, than seeing signings from elsewhere. Bringing players in from Manchester as is the case with Philips, just shows how good the academy is and one to be very proud of. Others seem to be on the threshold too, so long may it continue. Like anyone else, I would be gutted to see Phillips go, without getting the chance to see him start in the first team for a couple of seasons, so keep my fingers crossed that we find a way to keep him.

Popular Post Miller11
A lot going on today. 12 months ago it’d have been a major cause for dispondency, but what a change in a few short months. I hope our new regime can persuade Phillips to stay for now, and I think it might do him the world of good to choose to. Brereton’s a bit of a different case, but I hope he stays too. As a decade long pessimist I’m actually reasonably confident it won’t end in the worst case scenario for once. I know it’s early days, and I don’t want to be too premature, but the Tomasson/Broughton team look to be the absolute real deal. The annoyances come from the fact that it took Venky’s over a decade to move along from shysters, plodders and idiots and actually appoint someone decent. The development of some players (Travis being the glaring example) in a couple of months has been astonishing, and if we’d have been competent enough before they arrived to secure Lenihan and Nyambe - who would likely both have benefitted from JDT’s methods, our squad would be looking pretty immense right now. We’ve got people in the club who want to “think big” again, and I absolutely love it. Hopefully they can drag a few of the other employees up to having the required levels of pride in the club. And some fans too. Keeping Phillips and Brereton would be testament to that and a real statement… it would also do our chances of promotion the world of good. We’re on the verge of something really good.

It's pretty premature to say this of Broughton at this stage. So far he has made two permanent signings, both players already tracked for a while by the club, and bid on previously if I recall. Both players were from relegated sides, which made it easier to do than in the past. And a lad on loan from Liverpool, which has been part of our transfer policy for 2 years too. Meanwhile, three players worth decent money have walked off on free transfers, and we still stand a chance of losing our best prospect in years for a pittance. Brereton has not signed his new deal and as a result we are likely to lose him for less than we'd like. There are 2 weeks of the window left. To be clear, I'm not blaming him for any of that. I'm just saying nothing has really shown he is the real deal, as things stand. Maybe he is, but not gonna be able to call that until the end of the January transfer at the least I would think.
