My take on it was we were 2nd and to mowbray that was it,job done ,whereas a manager with some ambition would realise a club like ours ,the opportunities for silverware would be few and far between and would have gone all out for the top spot. All thru mowbrays tenure that has been his way .I recon had we made the playoffs he would have been shown up to be the ambitionless bloke he is

I suppose given the pressure there was to bounce back first time then it's understandable that the mentality was job done, breathe and relax.  You are right though it does show the character trait of Mowbray and co as a lot of managers would've said lets finish it off by winning this thing we and the club/owners/fans deserve it.

Then we come to the next season and instead of saying we won't be breaking the bank but we are going to go for it. Double bounce pipping into the feel good factor and renewed owner interest and backing lets make the most of it.

But no lets not lets just settle for the plod and hope to be challenging in 3/5/7 years or so.

What a complete waste of time he was.

Yes the narrative is being predictably twisted now as time goes on.

Read something on facebook the other day 'fans' agreeing that Mowbray walked because he saw this situation coming and there was no money.  Just where the hell do these people come up with this crap from when the guy had been telling all in the media he'd had NO contract offer.

And was clearly miffed he hadn't but don't let the truth stand in the way of a good old spin.

We can't just whitewash history and completely disregard the work TM did during that initial period.

Firstly, we were doomed and we all knew it - the Coyle disaster was heading in no other direction. We had an ageing (shit) squad, amateur coaching sessions all season and we were a shambles backstage (no scouting team, etc, etc).

TM's immediate impact was almost keeping us up. We were much better from the point of him arriving.

And then he played a massive part in turning the nosediving plane of a club in the other direction.

Put staff into key positions, gave us some semblance of a 'normal' club and then, of course, replacing that shitshow of a squad with a much, much younger exciting squad with resale value.

Yes, he had many failings and - yes, he should have been potted on a few occasions.

But let's not start pretending the good things that he was undoubtedly central to didn't happen.

Hi all,

Sunderland fan here. Tony Mowbray is our new boss. Could you tell me how you all feel about him please?

Style of football, formation etc,

Is it true he likes to field a youthful line up?

Reckon a mid table finish is a shoe-in with him.

A lot of our fans are underwhelmed after losing Alex Neil who was very popular.

I think Rovers fans have had their impression of him soured by the fact that our owners are disinterested and he ended up staying on longer than he should, ending in a season where we had a quite remarkable first half and a catastrophic second half and it got a bit unpleasant at the end.

I would say that he is a good appointment for you as a promoted club with probably more expectation (like us when we came up after only 1 season down) than the majority of promoted sides, he came in here with an uphill battle to stay up and a weak squad and didn't manage it. We then got promoted and finished 15th, 11th, 15th and 8th with probably a bottom half wage budget.

His transfer record is not perfect but pretty good nonetheless and he can develop players so if your owners don't interfere and allow full autonomy and the ability to partially reinvest, he can make profit on assets. We sold Armstrong for a big profit, Brereton should be sold for a big profit, Rothwell would have been had our owners not intervened and Dack would have was it not for terrible luck on injuries. We have a few other very good signings in his tenure especially his use of the loan market and he gave the chance to numerous youngsters, some of whom (Wharton, Travis, Buckley, Nyambe and Lenihan) played important roles for him.

Tactically he went quite pragmatic at the start which worked, tried to make us into a passing side which didn't, then went to 5 at the back which was a masterstroke for a while but eventually became something that he stubbornly stuck too when it isn't working. He is prone to overthinking things tactically and has tactical ideas that might seem clever in his head but not as good in practice, and his sub usage was mixed.

His seasons follow a very typical pattern with a dip in the early months of the year and although he is a safe pair of hands that shouldn't have you worrying too much about going down,

Steady but not spectacular.

As a man? He's honest, he's a tryer, he means well. He's a good man. He's relatable and he understands football culturally. He'll have you finish mid-table and if you're happy, he'll have you finish mid-table for the next few years.

If he had left here after 3 years almost everybody would have been delighted with him.

...but he didn't, he stayed too long and out expectations outgrew him.

Style of football? Changes seemingly every season. We've had everything - we played very defensive when he took over, we played very attacking in League one, we played possession football with Lewis Holby and Harvey Elliott and we played counter attacking 5-2-3 / 3-4-3 in his final season here. It changed every season, if you ask me it was short-termism. He held on to the same formation for far too long despite obvious flaws and showed loyalty to his favourite players to find a way to get them into the team, resulting in some surreal decisions playing people miles out of position, including the legendary Bradley Johnson playing false 9.

Formation? Changed every year with his style of football. But once he settled on one for the season it very rarely changed.

Youthful? Well, yes. But often prioritising other teams youth before our own. He has a great relationship with City and Liverpool, meaning we often got their players on loan. Whilst we saw some good players - Elliott, Aderabayo, Harwood Bellis, it was at the detriment to our own players.

Mid Table? An absolute shoe in. Don't be surprised if you're in superb form before Christmas/January then there's a huge breakdown called the 'Tony Mowbray Death Spiral' where everything goes wrong, the formation doesn't change and you lose momentum ending up in a mid-table finish.

I would be underwhelmed as well. Good luck, rather you than me if I'm honest.

Did a steady job for a couple of years. Outstayed his Use By date by at least one season. Could never reconcile the collapses in form after January window closed & ultimately, that happening repeatedly tarnished his legacy.

Surprised Sunderland don’t think they can do better TBH…

Its your turn to suffer I'm afraid. Plead with your club to have him on an annual contract.

Don't bother going from January onwards.

I was glad to see the back of him . Baffling decisions and stubborn as a mule. Puts players before club and wants to develop good honest people rather than  good , match winning footballers

You could of done far better and shows a lack of ambition by your owners. He wont last 18 months up there

get used to buzz words such as death spiral, lemon drizzle cake and ripped jeans

Good luck, snooze fest coming and watch out for his mates lads getting contracts and fucking you right up in the cup games.  He doesn't give a shit about the cup we always lost to teams below us....he likes lemon drizzle cake, doesn't know where to play his players....

Apart from that he's a good shout...🙈

Mowbray is mid table championship head coach who is good with players and fans.

Has Plan A and stick to that too much and not able to tactical change a game during a game.

After Christmas, results drop off and you will go a massive losing streak.
