I have to smile at that photo of Tommy pursuing the ball in spite of the trailing leg from the defender. Obviously the lad would have been limping around with a twisted ankle after that. Today you would be getting “ there was contact “ and the commentators would be wondering aloud why Tommy didn’t go down !

He played like one too! He was so slow by today's standards.

But he got the ball in the net and as we have seen recently, that's quite important!!

He scored over 30 goals in 4 consecutive seasons. And that's without taking the penalties. Our two penalty takers were Eckersley and Langton. Tommy had to be virtually dragged over to take that penalty against Bristol Rovers which became his seventh of the game.
