Well going off the HSH list that someone previously reported on here - the shortlist is likely to look something like this:

Mark Robins

Tony Pulis

Micky Mellon

Dave Challinor

Rob Edwards

The managerial equivalent of a World Cup Group of Death

You wouldn't want any of them

Nigel Adkins is the one for this lot. I don't want him, but I think he's right up their alley and likely to get the job. If I was asked to guess who I think will get it, I would go with Adkins.

On the scrapheap just like Mowbray was. He's not even in the discussion, just like Mowbray wasn't in 2017. A similar manager to Lambert, Coyle, Mowbray. He would jump at the chance, IMO. He was previously linked with the Rovers job too.

Why would they like him?

1) Because he won back to back promotions at Southampton once upon a time. From L1 to the Prem in two seasons. Something that they apparently wanted Mowbray to do in 2018.

2) His Southampton teams played good football.

3) His stats at Southampton are pretty good. In their promotion season from L1 they kept a club record number of clean sheets.

4) The following season in the Championship they set a club record of 10 consecutive league wins. They lost only 2 of their first 17 games (the opposite of a Mowbray spiral). They went on a 12 game unbeaten run from January to March to stay in the top 2 and finish 2nd (opposite of Mowbray). They stayed in the top 2 all season in their first season back up from L1. That's pretty impressive.

If we look at what happened with Adkins after Southampton it's clear he's another Mowbray though.

Reading - Appointed in March 2013 with Reading in the Premier League. He couldn't save them from relegation, even though most of the damage was done by previous manager, Brian McDermott.

First season in the Championship he finishes 7th. One spot above Rovers and a point away from the play offs. He was sacked in December 2014 after a 6-1 defeat against Brum with Reading 10 points behind the play off places.

Sheff Utd - He lasts one season as their manager in L1 guiding them to their lowest league finish in 32 years. They finish 11th, 8 points off the play offs and Adkins is sacked as a result.

Hull - He arrived at Hull in December 2017 with Hull sat 20th and 3 points above the drop zone. They finished 18th, 8 points clear of danger. The following season he achieves a comfortable mid table finish in 13th. At the end of that season he rejects the offer of a new contract and leaves the club as he and the owners fail to agree on future plans.

Charlton - He takes over from Lee Bowyer in March 2021 with 10 games left to play in the 20/21 season. He wins 5 out of those 10 games, as Charlton finish level on points with Oxford in 6th place but miss out on the play offs by goal difference. Similar to Mowbray in that "he was so close".

He was sacked this season, in October 2021, after a dismal run of 2 wins in 13 left Charlton in the relegation zone in L1.

He definitely has a bit of Mowbray about him. I don't want him here, he would be no different to Mowbray for me. What are the chances though that the Pune lot simply hear about his Southampton days and say "yeah, he's the man"? It would be just like them to ignore recent history and appoint him based on what he did 10 years ago.

Completely agree with this. He's their man.

He was one of the small number of names that got mentioned in February 2017 before Mowbray turned up here.

There is clearly a policy here of employing managers who have a PL promotion on their CV - Lambert, Coyle, Warnock (almost), Mowbray

Most importantly Adkins would do the job how they want it - he would work with Lowe and Benson and limit his coaching demands to being able to appoint his old mate Crosby (similar to Mowbray with Venus).

He has that uber positive attitude and mentality which borders on nonsensical at times but would go down well in the Pune bungalow in the annual summit meeting.

Call me a pessimist, but I'm still of the opinion that Mowbray may well still be here next season.

I can't shake the thought that he's playing silly buggers in public in order to force the issue and engineer a new contract.

I’d give him a 3yr deal now to avoid the dross being touted, we’re shopping in the poundshop reject bin, which has always been the case under these useless owners.

To be fair, Robins has done a good job at Coventry with all that’s gone on there. Not that I think he’s the answer to our problems

Whoever's in charge does so with one arm tied behind their back, as you've said before.

Dyche or Farke would definitely be worth rolling the dice for. Seeing would be believing with this lot though and I'm sure they'd find a way of cocking it up.

The other names mentioned thus far though....hmmmm!!!

If the person making the choices has previously chosen Owen Coyle.......

The only way a style of football can be deemed 'good' is when it wins matches, which as we know, has been in short supply here for months.

Whatever style, the clubs need to establish a clear philosophy on how they want to play and not change for every managerial approach. Look at Ajax, Bayern etc, might include Brentford as well. They hire manager to implement their philosophy as well as down the academy setups. That also gives you an easier transfer policy as you bring in players to fit clear criterias. Look at how many clubs that needs to change the whole squad because they don't players to implement the current manager's style.

Another example is Bodø/Glimt here in Norway, who is a smaller city (55 000) here in Norway. They have been doing this for years and now looking to win the league 3 years in a row. This season they reached the quarter final of European Conference League, turning over teams like Celtic, Alkmaar among other. Won over Mourinho's Roma twice (First win was 6-1 which was Mourinho biggest loss in his career). They won 3-1 at Celtic Park despite being two month off-season. Even more impressive is that they lose half of their players each year to foreign clubs and are able to replace them with unknowns. All this because they players coming in are bought to fit the system with clear defined roles.

Oh, and they also have a great manager in Kjetil Knutsen who somebody mentioned as candidate. Don't think we'd be able to get him as he just signed a new contract and they are probably bigger fish waiting to take him in the horizon.

If this next manager has any ties to HSH or the rats that run it there won't be a single pound of my money being seen by Rovers for a very long time. Unless it comes out that Dyche/Farke etc are somehow employed by them (they aren't).

The Venky's have absolutely no excuse for getting this wrong. It's not like there's no options out there. There's literally 3/4 lists of 6 names you can put together that would be an upgrade on Mowbray (on paper at least)

Dyche doesn't want it? Farke. He doesnt want it? Bilic? He doesnt want it? Jokanovic, etc etc.

No excuses for fucking this up.

History has shown that if we hadn’t sacked Don McKay, we would never have won the Premier League.

I have to be hopeful right now, & have a wait & see attitude…

but based on what Mowbray lacked, we want a person who wants to be here; has a history of promotion; and has an infectious, positive attitude. Mowbray has achieved promotion, but he lacked the attitude, and based on the last few months, we can definitely say he didn’t care about being at Rovers anymore.

I wonder if the silence from Waggott / Venkys is due to them already having someone set to join just waiting for Mowbray to leave.

We say this about transfers.

"Wonder if we haven't announced "X" because we're announcing 3 players at once!"

"Maybe we aren't announcing the departure until we have a replacement sorted"

It's the same as always, it's because we are slow/not prepared/run by clowns etc.
