We had an interesting discussion a week or so ago about time-wasting. I can't remember the actual topic so I'll put it on here if that's OK?

Coincidentally, great article on it in  today's Guardian.

Average time for the ball in play in the Premier League----54 minutes, 22 seconds.

Shortest game this season-- Rotherham v QPR.   The ball was in play for 44 minutes!!

Interestingly Rotherham played in the second shortest game at Birmingham. In another game one of their players was booked for time wasting--- in the 30th minute!!

Outside of financial doping, it's one of the biggest issues blighting the game today.

My suggestions:

Any set piece which isn't taken within a set amount of time is turned over to the opposition. 

During substitutions, if the player leaving the pitch isn't off within 20 seconds then his replacement is delayed coming on by 5 minutes. 

For injuries, the clock stops if physios enter the pitch. For physios to enter the pitch the hurt player has to signal with his hand up that he requires treatment. They then have to leave the pitch (like now) but cannot come back on for 2 minutes. 

If the player does not signal he needs genuine medical attention the game continues. Gentlemanly conduct is no longer expected, since the rules have been abused for so long.

 

Those are some fairly simple changes that can be implemented. One thing is for sure, and that's that yellow cards are no deterrent at all.

The laws of the game provide for time wasting or time consuming. The text below is taken from Law 7 - Duration of the Game. Every aspect of lost time is covered. Quite simply it's the referees who are choosing to ignore it.

3. Allowance for time lost

Allowance is made by the referee in each half for all playing time lost in that half through:

• substitutions
• assessment and/or removal of injured players
• wasting time
• disciplinary sanctions
• medical stoppages permitted by competition rules e.g. ‘drinks’ breaks (which should not exceed one minute) and ‘cooling’ breaks (ninety seconds to three minutes)
• delays relating to VAR 'checks' and 'reviews'
• any other cause, including any significant delay to a restart (e.g. goal celebrations)

The fourth official indicates the minimum additional time decided by the referee at the end of the final minute of each half. The additional time may be increased by the referee but not reduced.

The referee must not compensate for a timekeeping error during the first half by changing the length of the second half.

its a constant problem in the modern day and the last game against Hull should have been at least 8 minutes but 5 minutes was pathetic given the amount of subs made, injuries and Darlow/Hull time wasting.

They haven't the guts to challenge the managers and staff and the crowd screaming for them to blow the whistle when their side is ahead. Or perhaps they haven't the support?

Still think this should be determined by a 4th official and the ball should be in play for 90 minutes.

So the referee just ignores most of those rules then.

 

It's a lot like how there are red and yellow cards for bad tackles and foul play but those rules don't apply to Manchester United.

Pearson eventually got a second yellow card for mouthing off to the referee, but John Buckley must be wondering how he managed to avoid getting two straight reds!

We will be extremely fortunate tonight if any of Millwall, Sunderland and West Brom fail to get 3 points.

Probably kicking off in 8th tomorrow with the prospect of dropping to 10th if we don't win.

This is Rovers most important week of the season.

Rovers are playing two promotion 6 pointers. 

4 points minimum are needed.

It's been predominantly Huddersfield second half. Good chance they go on and win this.
