What are Sunderland fans expecting? They have just come up.  They want a boring middle of the road, go nowhere manager to consolidate their position.  Mowbray is perfect

Mowbray to the Mackems just about confirmed

Isn’t Honeyman a Sunderland fan?

No, he is a Boro fan. As an aside, there was a Honeyman who used to play for Sunderland not too long ago.

Clearly Sunderland a dysfunctional mess. No other reason Neil would walk at this stage. Mowbray might be a sound appointment for them having lasted 5 years working for our freakshow, they'll stay up but a serious downgrade on Neil and they'll learn the hard way about his baffling tactics and substitutions.

I don't think Mowbray would be a disastrous appointment for them. He can be infuriating but I'd expect him to keep them up comfortably enough. What's left behind once he goes is another question, as we're finding out now.

It's easy to make out like he has left a wreckage but we have an asset about to be sold for £15m that he bought aswell as £10-15m from one of his signings last summer left unspent and a potential further £4m potential fee for Rothwell that the owners prevented.

As ever, it is the owners to blame.

this is so funny, sunderland fans are apoplectic with rage, first thing mowbray will do is order a comfy seat and  set about playing everyone out of position,is elliot bennett available,i bet corry evans is orgasmic,3 more years of ****** about in the centre circle and getting praised for it😂

If they are apopletic with rage then they are massively overreacting. For a club in their position, Mowbray is a steady appointment. Could do better but could do much worse.

sunderland fans know what he`s like as well as being a middlesborough legend, they are hardly likely to bestow him with the red carpet,he won`t last 5 season up there, that i can guarantee,if it was`nt for the chicken mob he`d have been gone from ewood a lot sooner as well, hung around like an eggy fart

Good luck to Sunderland with Mowbray there, It won't be good watching but surprised he going there being such a big Boro fan. Wonder if Venus is going there?

And half of the shite in our side.

He can have Gallagher for £6m ,bargain for a 7 goal a season winger/full back/getting splinters in his arse on the bench.

I just had a look on there. A Boro fan was waxing lyrical about what a good appointment Mowbray is. He's a right honest bloke with values and all that bollocks.

The very first response was "He’s fucking shite man!"

I actually LOLd

I mean, some of their supporters' reactions are definitely way OTT. I get that he's not the most exciting appointment, but from some of the comments you'd think they were about to appoint Steve Kean.

There are some misguided comments on there regarding TM playing a 'good style of football' though. I've seen that a few times and whatever they're basing it off, it isn't the time he had with us. Our football was largely attritional under Mowbray, and during the period he was obsessed with possession it was downright horrible to watch. We did have some good performances under Mowbray, but they tended to be in isolation rather than over a sustained period of time. I find it hard to even really describe how we played under him, but I wouldn't overall describe it as good to watch. Ultimately however I only cared about results, and in some seasons (L1 season, first season back in the Championship) it was good enough regardless of how we played. In other seasons it became an added frustration as the death spirals, tinkering and overcomplication repeatedly torpedo'd our chances of getting into the playoffs. Obviously with last season being the worst, considering where we were and where we ended up. Even though it was technically our highest placed finish under him, the last half of the season in many ways made it feel like the lowest.

Do people think Mowbray would get a good reception here?

I'd politely applaud him, personally. Not because I liked him as such, I just think it's good form to show polite respect to former managers who aren't Steve K***.

He never knew what his best team was and he never settled on a coherent way of playing for any length of time.

I'd say the closest we had to consistency was from around October in our League 1 season to the end of our first season back in the Championship. Still not sure what you'd call our style during that period, honestly, but it was somewhat settled for the most part. I think I remember a statistic showing we played the most long balls, or joint most, during our first season back in the Championship, but it wasn't like it was under Big Sam.

Anyway, after that he tried to evolve our style and yeah, from that point it became confusing and inconsistent. He wanted to do the possession based style for a while, but it didn't work. The stats from that season (19/20, I think?) showed that we actually did far better in the games where we had less possession. Our burst of good form during the 21/22 season that got us to second was basically a low possession, counter-attacking style, but once teams cottoned on to what we were doing we had no effective plan B. Coupled with BBD's injury we lost all semblance of style and just faded away.

Hes turned into a bit of a dysfunctional owner specialist. Coventry, Rovers and now Sunderland.

Sky always say ‘Mowbray teams play good football’, so to be fair to fans of other clubs that rarely watched Rovers they will believe it.

A few of us on here said he had re-built his reputation at BRFC and would get another decent Championship gig as he would be seen as a decent second tier manager within the game - the ‘one of the worst managers we’ve EVER had’ brigade weren’t for having it though…
