Celtic v Rovers UEFA Cup tie 2002

Recommended Posts

away from home  was a top night  ( well a couple of days for us as we  had a night in Edinburgh  also except for  of a run in with some Aberdeen fans  but some Rangers fans  jumped in  )

Invited  into  hidden'  pubs  behind shutters adorned with  Irish flags   and given all sorts of concoctions including 'buckfast -  felt like we totally outsung   them and should certainly have won the game

Walked it  back to Glasgow Centre after  the game  ( seemed to take ages)  but got   changed and went straight back out in Glasgee' for halloween -   which I think from memory was also a student night  and there where some sights to be seen and enjoyed  !!

Top few days and certainly  one of the best away trips  in my following of Rovers

At home totally different story -  taken over by hoardes of 'drunken green and white   and totally outsung  in the stands,   outplaye dand outthunk on the park

when celtic opened the scoring,at the back of the riverside,a celtic fan in disguise jumped up in celebration, before the inevitable retribution was doled out by rovers fans, two blokes in rangers tops appeared from nowhere and clumped him on the head😄,luckily for him he managed to escape their clutches and ran down the riverside steps at usain bolt like speed

just before half time,i was going for a couple of pies only to be met by a hail of coins thrown by the drunken scottish scum,i thought **** this and started to pick up all coins, paid for the food and still had enough left for my dinners all week, particularly remember a sikh in a celtic turban giving us particular abuse, which was pretty cool tbh

There's a comprehensive look back to when Rovers played at Celtic in the UEFA Cup 20 years ago in this article on the site here:

What are your memories of the tie?

I watched it on TV. Really wanted you boys to beat them. Celtic are a vile club and I was disappointed in the result.

Nearly lost my job at the time cos of it. Queued up in the early hours under the Blackburn end to secure a ticket. Nobhead of a boss refused my holiday request. I went anyway. Away leg was eventful, half the pubs near the ground wouldn't even serve us for the simple fact we were English. The game itself I just remember us dominating without scoring tbh, I'd had more than a few ales though.

After the game plenty of morons trying to goad us with their usual IRA nonsense.

I'm fond of Scottish people in general, but Celtic can fuck off, they belong in the same cess pit as Burnley and Liverpool

It was embarrassing. We should have smashed them 7 - 0 in the first leg but for some reason no body would have a sho on goal.

Missed the second leg as we had gone on holiday to Amerikkka. Me and my dad were looking up the result in a diner or something like that as that was the only place we could get on the Internet. Was gutted to lose to them. Especially when we got back and heard about how they went and caused loads of trouble.

I'm pretty sure that year Uefa gave them an award for good behaviour. Fuck Uefa, they have destroyed football.

Although we played pretty well during the first leg and didn't deserve to lose to a sucker punch of a goal, we did not score.

Second leg we were not at the races and celtic did a job on us. They were deserved winners in the end.

One clown jumped out the BBE run the entire length of the pitch, stood in front of 8000 celtic fans and took his top off to reveal a Rangers shirt....... What a "not right" he was.

Yeah they were provoked by scummy Ajax hooligans.  Meanwhile Rangers fans redecorate Manchester unprovoked.

The point being they’ve both got a selection of idiot fans that follow them. That was the first story I found when I Googled it. I’m sure there are lots of others.  So Celtic fans do cause bother sometimes.

Their fans have an excellent reputation in Europe for good behaviour. They are generally well known like the Tartan Army for being peaceful fans who behave themselves.

They also have fans that cause trouble like everyone else.

Just for the record I’ve no allegiance to either of those two north of the borders Rangers fans are probably worse. But I’ve seen the Celtic fans at Ewood first hand.

Yes of course anyone can find incidents of any clubs fans including Blackburn Rovers.  https://www.lep.co.uk/news/crime/preston-north-end-supporters-were-attacked-seven-blackburn-fans-brawl-which-left-man-unconscious-3061538

The incidents you mentioned are in Scotland where they get involved in sectarian rivalry.  In Europe, out of the toxicity of Scotland they are generally well thought of.

Ask any dingles fan who attended the 1977 ( I think) Anglo Scottish Cup final at Turf Moor. I'm sure they will disagree. Utter bedlam that evening.

At Celtic Park in the away end, I remember us singing "Friedel, Friedel" during the warm-up and Egil Ostenstad came over to us to clap, I think he thought we were singing "Egil, Egil".  It was the thought that counts though 🙃

Total bollocks.

All clubs have a small percentage of fans that cause trouble. Celtic always have a huge following of glory hunting 'supporters' and therefore have a decent size section of knobheads.
