It felt like he scored a penalty for us every game during that first season post relegation. I don't know how many he scored, but it felt like a lot. I liked him, good player and was one of very few positives in a dull season. Disagree. Used to say that if ever a player should be used as a Specialist player in American Football then Carsley was it. If you could bring him on for penalties then take off him straight after then he would have been great. Other than that average at best. 2 Quote

Looked the better of the too but was very small for a footballer (assuming I'm thinking of the right chap.) I think that’ll be him yep. Few appearances in Hughes’ first season so it would have been around that time. Quote

He has since had a career in Maccabi Haifa, in Israel. He is also playing for Barbados, these days. I remember having high hopes for him, he scored for fun during a loan season in Scotland and everyone hoped he'd come back and turn into at least a squad player. As I remeber it he barely got a look in though. 21 hours ago, Tyrone Shoelaces said: I remember Bohinen for his performance against Forest. He looked to be a world beater. Scored two goals and ran the show in a 7-0 thrashing. What went wrong after is a mystery. Scored a great goal at Old trafford as well, came in from the right and nutmegged McClair and Gary Neville before scoring past Schemichel. What was the name of that big lunk centre forward who played a whole season in the Championship for us without scoring? Think it was under Bowyer or just before. 1 Quote

Gordon Gekko Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Carsley was class in the 99/20 season, everyone else was absolutely woeful! Christian Daily at centre back scoring that own goal at Ewood against City when they took over the place. Absolute horror show to end a shockingly bad season. 2 Quote

He passed it on to his chairman who said “ Remember Jim, not a penny less than £2 Million if they get on to you “. Apparently Hodgson’s opening offer was £5 Million and Jim Smith talked it up to £5.25 Million. £5 Million more than he was worth ! Edited September 19, 2022 by Tyrone Shoelaces 1 Quote

Adam C Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Don’t know how justified this one is but what about David Bentley? Never see him mentioned among the great players that have been with us but Bentley was a class act for us for a while. I remember the hat trick against Utd, a few England caps, a protracted transfer saga, and a big money move to spurs that didn’t really work out for him. Then he came back on loan I think and was fairly shite. Think he retired early on as he lost the love for the game. Probably one of our record transfers I’d imagine. 2 Quote
roverandout Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Roque santa cruz. He had a good season but going to man city was a mistake. I think that signing underlined that Hughes wasn't up to the city job. 1 Quote

I was behind the goal I remember his debut, away at Wimbledon (Selhurst Park) - panic buy as Hodgson missed out on someone else and we were struggling. Torrential rain, he looked lively but missed two sitters. Rest is history. As an aside we all got soaked and my mate was due to meet his girlfriend’s parents for the first time at a swanky hotel after the match. He turned up looking like a drowned rat, like us, went down badly! 1 Quote

Bentley's third goal was a brilliant strike, in that game, but the first one sticks in my mind, as it seemed to me such an unorthodox goal. Most players, I guess, would bring the ball down to shoot, or wait for it to drop, but Bentley leapt and scored with a sort of side foot downward volley, with the lack of power being made up for by the speed and surprise of the move. I wonder how players like Bentley would fare in the modern game without wide midfielders. I suppose, like Harvey Elliot, who seems a similar player, he'd end up a CM in a three, but it wouldn't give him the opportunity to show his full ability, such as his crossing and his dribbling, as much. He probably wouldn't be considered prolific or fast enough to be a wide forward, in the modern game, at the highest level. Maybe, that's partly why he gave it up, seeing the way the game was heading, with individualism being increasingly wiped from the game. He has complained that the game felt too robotic for him. 1 Quote
