Nuttall is lost Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 31 minutes ago, dingles staying down 4ever said: Heard from someone during the run in of the premiership winning season that Dalglish wanted out but at the time didn't believe it. He wanted to go back to Liverpool as he felt he had unfinished business there and once the premiership was won the mission at Rovers was accomplished. Same person told me about Shearer wanting out during Euro 96 and we all know what happened after he returned from England duty. I heard that aswell but still doesn't make sense. Liverpool had only replaced Souness and had not come calling Kenny in early 1994. Roy Evans was doing well by the end of 1994/95 and that position was not available nor likely to be for a couple of years at least. By June 1995 Liverpool was not an option so why go upstairs of all things to sit on his ass doing nothing? He then goes and takes the Newcastle job in 1997! So much for Liverpool. Its just my hunch that Kenny didn't enjoy pressure and now there would be pressure of keeping BRFC at the top which he wasn't relishing. The other rumour I heard was when Jack Walker vetoed the Geoff Thomas transfer in August 92 he got the hump and decided to see out his contract and leave then. Shearer was always going to leave in 1996. Could see that coming a mile away. Once Kenny left it was curtains for the club being a top team. The only way top players come to a club like Blackburn is if you have a top and inspiring manager. Ray Harford certainly wasn't that. The only way Shearer would have stayed is if we had appointed a big name manager to replace Harford in the summer of 1996 and even then I'm not sure he would have stayed. Quote

riverholmes Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 Reviving this thread as I had a random and vague memory of defender Gordon Greer scoring a goal in a friendly win over Barcelona. Couldn’t find that game (if it exists) but did rediscover this 3-2 friendly win over Barcelona, in 2001: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/hughes-volley-sinks-barcelona-9272889.html Blackburn Rovers (4-4-2): Friedel; Curtis, Berg (Taylor, 79), Short, Bjornebye; Gillespie (Hignett, 82), Dunn, Flitcroft (Mahon, h-t), Duff; Blake (Bent, 62), Grabbi (Hughes, 79). Substitutes not used: Filan (gk), Greer. Barcelona (4-3-3): Bonano; De la Torre (Puyol, h-t), Christanval, Andersson (Anderson, h-t), Reiziger; Luis Enrique (Rochemback, h-t), Xavi, Cocu; Geovanni (Saviola, h-t), Kluivert, Overmars (Trashorras, 60). Well done to the guy for refusing to name the 'manager' we had after Big Sam. And yep, the treatment Salgado and Nelsen received was a disgrace. 7 Quote

riverholmes Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 (edited) I think I mentioned him before, but Gary Harkins is one of the obscure former Rovers players that is memorable to me, as he sums up what "finding yourself" as footballer is all about. As a youth/reserve player at Rovers, during the early 2000s, he was a defensive midfielder or centre back. However, he made a career for himself back in native Scotland as a skilful creative midfielder. This is an interesting account of his career in The Herald, from 2020 - though, as always with these kind of celebratory profiles, I'm sure not the whole picture. He says in it: "I got to a point when I’d left Blackburn and went to Grimsby – I had a year at Grimsby and I hated it – and I thought, ‘I’m not playing football this way. If I’m going to play, then I’m going to play the way I want to and enjoy it’. : "Jester, genius, maverick, maestro: Gary Harkins reflects on a career less ordinary" https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/18544195.jester-genius-maverick-maestro-gary-harkins-reflects-career-less-ordinary/ Edited September 18, 2024 by riverholmes Quote
roverandout Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Hakan sukur was another player not alot of people remember. He played about 9 games for us and scored 2 goals. It was a real coup at the time signing him on loan. Souness worked with him at galatasaray 1 Quote
