roverandout
Shame because Mexico would give France a far tougher test. Poland should be kicked out for laying on their backs and showing their bellies
Proudtobeblue&white
So Poland go through, poor group.

Backroom DE. Posted November 30, 2022 Backroom Share Posted November 30, 2022 As long as the French play to their usual standard they'll know that they've got a pretty safe passage to the next round. Australia will put up a fight against Argentina and the Saudis have already shown that it's possible to overwhelm them in that way, but obviously if Argentina play like they did tonight it'll be a pretty straightforward progression for them too. You never know when it comes to knockout football, but based on what we've seen so far Argentina will have a tougher test than France.

The referee as an individual is to blame. Plus it is just like saying that a general refereeing mistake could be a major issue, as it has been. Time to get rid of VAR all together. Its just shite 52 minutes ago, roversfan99 said: Because that is where the money is. Why do you think that is? Does that matter really? any many clubs who have challenge for the league actually employed an English coach? Not many is the answer. 47 minutes ago, Wheelton Blue said: Like Ancelotti you mean? But he managed in England twice. bluebruce
I'm glad a late goal stopped it being a case of qualification by fair play. What a fucking stupid rule that is.

roversfan99
I think Japan in a recent tournament also went through via fair play. It is a difficult one I guess, there are loads of initial deciding factors when points are level and the chances of goal difference, goals scored and head to head all being the same are very low. You cant fit in another game but essentially it feels as if Poland being so ambtionless has edged them through. It was a great night of entertainment. joey_big_nose
France in the quarters very likely if we get past Senegal. We havent managed to beat a top team in the quarters since 66.... Will give Southgate a chance to lay the easy draw criticsm to rest against the best team in the competition, should we get through. Tyrone Shoelaces
Late in the second half of the Argentina - Poland game last night I saw Argentina were lined up in the old 2-3-5 formation.
Wheelton Blue
Over the group stage, there were signs from France, Argentina, Spain, Brazil and possibly even Germany, of them being able to step up a gear or two when they need to. As expected at the outset of the tournament, these are the teams for England to beat. Edited December 1, 2022 by Wheelton Blue

As the PL developed and it's top 4-6-8 became established under foreign and sovereign wealth ownership having a foreign manager/ head coach became even more of a status symbol, an elite competition in itself. This has progressively reduced the pathway for British born managers/ coaches to climb the pyramid all the way to the top. That is unlikely to change anytime soon if ever. Ok Toon went for Howe. Why? To stay in the PL that season of his appointment. If they hit a sticky patch of form my predictions that they go foreign. There is no longer a deep pool of British managers considered name enough for the elite PL clubs. The knock-on effect to the England job is there for all to see. For a manager who I do not rate that highly Southgate has done a good job and his England record shows that. My belief is that this is mainly down to the excellent squad that he has at his disposal. If a big fat bloke has not been a dick then England may well have actually got a trophy by now.

If Allardyce was still in the job we would still be seeing Joe Hart cahill Kevin Davies Rooney etc. Southgate did what no other England manager had the balls to do and that's bin off the underachieving old guard and invest in youth

The myth of hoofball persists and to dispel that look just at the quality players he brought in at Bolton. He would have a solid base for sure but would have utilised the emerging youth like Foden and Grealish a lot more. He's also a winner which helps.
