There was plenty angst brewing around me yesterday after the sub handed them the initiative. It wasn't revolving around lack of entertaining football it was more to do with concern we were asking to give that game away.

The two things go to gether. Unless you are entertained by seeing our defenders booting it back out to an opponent for half an hour.

I’ll sacrifice entertainment for results all day long and if he gets us up playing this way I will hold my hands up. It’s not the entertainment (although a couple of shots a game would be nice) it’s the nature in the way we defend. I just don’t see it being sustainable to sit 10 men behind the ball in our half for 30 mins a game against better opposition and keep clean sheets. these 1-0 wins turn to draws and losses then what. We have unsuccessful, boring football which we have witnessed numerous times already away from home . It’s a fine line at the minute between success and massive failure and it makes me nervous but like I say up to know he’s got it right and I hope with a few additions the other side of our game develops into something more exciting and less dangerous.

It's easy to see how we struggle in midweek away games when losing 1 nil as we tend to play exactly the same.

You have to chase a goal sometimes especially when there is a third of a game left and the opposition haven't caused you much bother at all. 

It's working so can't complain and hanging on all adds to the drama and relief at the end which is entertainment in it's own way. Just not in the purest sense but at some point there has to be a plan B because we got sussed second half of last season and it'll happen again.

I was talking to my son yesterday. He watches every game. Home and away.  He said - “ It’s like this most of the time Dad, in fact sometimes we’ve been  worse than this “.

Solid win, 2nd in the league and a chance to go top in the Derby before the World Cup.

Dont think any of us could’ve hoped for any better than this when the fixtures were released. If GB & JDT can get this group in this position, wait until they’ve had a couple of transfer windows.

The passing in the first half was laboured, turgid and un imaginative. Lots of the time we were playing walking football. Always in front of the opposition and so rarely around the sides. We should have teams shaking in their boots when they’re walking out at Ewood yet yesterday we let them play themselves in with no problem at all. We never go for the throat straight from the kick off. The couple of times we went out of character and played route one balls we caused them real problems.

The last 30 minutes of the second half had me pulling my hair out. Nearly all the game was played out in our last third of the pitch. Yes, we defended really well and restricted Hudds to speculative efforts most of the time. That was because they are really blunt up front, better teams will make the most of playing 30 minutes in our half. Anybody who thought that last half an hour was entertaining - come around to my house, I’ve got a hammer and some nails - you could knock them through the back of your hand. 
 

Sometimes I think we’ve watched so much shite over the last ten years we’ve forgotten what entertaining football looks like.

Genuine question, what would it have taken for you to be pleased with the season up to this point?

I’m pleased with the 36 points and 2 nd place. The football on display isn’t very pleasing.

Whiteman has 5 in last 12 months in this league and 37 altogether in his career. Same age.

This is so, so boring. Two completely different players, you’re judging by one stat and ignoring the other 8 posted.

For what it’s worth, I’d take Travis over Whiteman every day of the week from what I’ve seen. I think he’s underrated and gets a rough time on here. He’s one of the few in this squad with any sort of battle in him, is incredibly frustrating to the opposition and is arguably our most successful captain for a long time so far.

What’s a ‘successful captain’ in that context then? Someone who just happens to be wearing an armband as the team is winning plenty of games?

I still maintain you cant play Szmodics as the third member of a midfield 3 and the other 2 players suffer. If he plays further forward he is fine. Both Morton and Travis struggle as they get overrun as Szmodics does not contribute in this formation. Either play him as a third forward player or not at all.

Also still think Ayala plays too deep due to his lack of pace which also stretches our midfield too much.

Depends what you judge success on, I suspect. Whilst the team is getting these results Travis’ impact can only be described as positive.

Playing just Travis and Morton in central midfield was a mistake. Not the first time it’s happened this season. Hudds out numbered us there. We need three not two.

I don’t judge armband wearers on captaincy at all, just their playing ability. Bit of a non job in football.
